I would like to breed my dog, but I'm not sure if she is in season or not. She may be spotting. Is this a false season or should I take her to the male and see what happens?

Full Question:
I would like to breed my bloodhound, but I'm not sure if she is in season or not. She will be 3 in Dec. We picked her up last year in June 2010, the previous owner said "she was just in season in May 2010. In July 2010 she again came in season, bleeding, swelling, etc but we did not breed, (too young), and we were not sure we wanted to, so we waited. In Oct 2010 she again came into heat. Ahh she is an odd one for that. She then waited until June of 2011 to come into heat, and had a false pregnancy. I noticed one spot of some brownish colored blood on Friday night, but none last night and a little swelling, could she be in heat again so soon? Her sister just had 12 pups and she had some odd timing on her seasons also. I would like to breed my bitch. Is this a false season or should I take her to the male and see what happens?

There is no way we can answer this with any certainty. Your dog should be examined by a repro vet, her seasons do not sound normal. I’d also recommend the vet run a thyroid profile to see if she has some imbalances.
