We're crate training and finding that we need to force the dog into the crate. This doesn't seem like it establishes the right pattern. Can you give us any advice?

Full Question:
Our dog is a 1 year old husky retriever mix, about 50 pounds. We received her from friends that decided against keeping her. After viewing your DVD on establishing pack structure, we started crate training. This began about three weeks after having her, and on the second day of the crate training, she refused to go into the crate after her walk. I had to force her in and later after her next walk, my 16 year old daughter had to force her back in. At first she responded well to going in after a treat while we shut the door. But now she attempts to get the treat without bringing in her back feet or won't go in after the treat. Forcing her doesn't seem like it establishes the right pattern, but maybe that's what has to be done. After being forced in, she looks depressed. Can you give us any advice? Thanks.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Start feeding her ALL her meals in the crate, to make it more attractive location for her. You can also use higher value treats, like steak or cheese. Make sure to place the treats/food all the way in the back of the crate.

If she still won’t go, then place her in the crate.

Don’t feel sorry for her or acknowledge her if she looks depressed. That will only make the process harder for her.

I hope this helps.
