Full Question:
Cindy, We appreciate the great products and advice you and your company have provided us. We have purchased a prong collar and e-collar recently and after a week noticed that the dog's neck was really raw where the e-collar prongs have been and I was hoping you may have some insight on this. I removed the collar every few days and gave him a break but his skin is really swollen and started to develop pus around his neck. I'm worried that he may be allergic to the metal against his skin. Any advice?
Thanks,
Stephen
Cindy's Answer:
Hi Stephen,
I don’t recommend leaving the collar on for more than 12 hours a day. Put it on in the morning and remove it every evening. It’s not supposed to be left on for days at a time.
Also, if you don’t have it snug enough the probes will rub the skin and it will cause irritation. Most people think leaving it looser is better for the dog’s neck but the opposite it true.
You’ll have to let the skin heal up before you use the collar again.
Since I don’t know what kind of ecollar you have I can’t comment on the metal causing an allergic reaction. You may want to check your owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer of the ecollar. I have an email in to our ecollar manufacturers asking about allergies to the metal as well. I’ll let you know if I find out anything noteworthy.
I hope this helps.
