I have a female dane in heat. She started bleeding 12 days ago but just swelled up 6 days ago, I have never seen a female bleed for a week before actually swelling up. Is this normal?

Full Question:
Hi,

I have a female dane in heat. She started bleeding 12 days ago but just swelled up 6 days ago, I have never seen a female bleed for a week before actually swelling up. We thought something else was wrong at first. My males have only semi vaguely started paying her attention 6 days ago when she swelled up, normally they are acting crazy the whole time. I'm not sure if this means she's not fertile this heat or should I count from the time she swelled up. I put her with one of my males and he wasn't really interested in doing anything, and she has not flagged yet. We just moved the same weekend her heat started and I am concerned this may have put her heat out of wack. She has been bred before and this did not happen.

Thanks,
Pat

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I would have her checked over by a reproduction specialist. Our repro vet would probably do a culture, a scope, thorough exam and ultrasound. I’d also suggest a thyroid panel be done if you haven’t had one done on this female.

The move may have something to do with it, but I’d have her checked by a qualified specialist to know for sure.
