We have chosen not to get our female spayed. How do you handle a female in heat?

Full Question:
Hi,

Can you point me to any articles or eBooks, or give me some advice on how to handle a young female in heat. This is her third heat and we've handled it so far, but we just got turned on to your videos and methods and philosophies and we would like to learn how to handle this right. We have chosen not to have her spayed, as we plan on getting one litter out of her, probably this time next year, when she'll be two and a half years old.

Thank you for your time, and thank you for the great teaching.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I’m not sure what you mean about handling her during her heat?

Do you mean training or just daily living?

User Response:
Hi Cindy,

Thanks for getting back to me. I need a bit of advice on both aspects and I wondered how you handle your dogs when they are in heat. How do you handle the daily living and do you make any adjustments to training?

Thanks for your time and advice. I really appreciate it.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Well, I don't let my females have access to my male dogs unless I want them bred. I may kennel them a bit more if I don’t want blood all over the house. You can also use the dog diapers.

I also really follow the lead of the female. Some of them behave normally and can continue training as usual. Others may be a bit distracted or "hormonal" in which case I simply take a break from training during their cycle. Realize that the same dog can vary in their behavior from one heat cycle to the next so I really just pay attention to the demeanor and behavior they show me.
