My male dog has started marking inside the house, how should I address this?

Full Question:
I’m facing a problem with my male indoor dog. I also have two outdoor dogs—one male and one female. The outdoor male is actually his son, and there has been competition between them, which is why I separated them.

Lately, my indoor dog has started marking inside the house, but only when I’m not home. When I return and try to correct him, he doesn’t seem to understand or respond to the correction. I suspect this might be related to the competition between him and his son, but I’m not sure how to handle it properly.

What do you think is the best way to address this issue? Should i consider neutering him as a possible solution?I’d really appreciate your advice.

Thank you for your help!

Correcting dogs after finding marking doesn't help and is unfair to the dog. Unless you catch him when he starts to mark, he won't understand.

My first suggestion is to have him checked by a vet to rule out a bladder or kidney infection. If those tests are okay, I would restrict his freedom in the house when you can't supervise him to prevent him from practicing this behavior.

Being loose in my home is a privilege, not a right. Suppose one of my dogs starts eliminating in the house, chewing on items, getting into the trash, or engaging in other unwanted behaviors. In that case, they go back to the crate or exercise pen when I can't supervise.

Neutering may or may not help; it's impossible to know, but if you do decide to neuter, then I'd still rule out a urinary or kidney infection and use management to keep him from practicing this. Hormones take a while to recede so neutering alone isn't a quick fix.
