For those you that don't know what happened, here's a recap.
i was jogging Logan on my bike and he suddenly stopped too poop. I tried to drop the lead but it snagged my middle finger and broke the metacarpal bone below it. Nasty spiral break that went down the entire bone.
I had surgery today. They tried to nerve block my arm but it didn't numb it completely so they had to put me completely to sleep. But no big deal, I did fine w/ the anesthesia, no side effects woke up real quick after.
Here's the part that sucks. I expected pain but it was worse than when I broke it. They gave me duladid and it didn't even help...the third dose was the max safe dose and it helped for all of 20 minutes. I have a high tolerance to pain and I rated it at a level 8. After I went home it never let up so after 6 ours of suffering I just went to the ER and had a time release injection of Duladid (I didn't know but its stronger than morphine).
I was also on oxycodone. That's so weird, I am so sensitive to most drugs...I can't even take a child's dose of ibuprofen with out getting bruises all over me and making me sick. But opiates hardly effect me at all...I'm on hardcore stuff but it barely works and no side effects, go figure. I swear I don't have a secret heroin habit or anything.
Anyhow this sucks but at least I know its temporary. And i can deal with a level 6 pain over 8...I couldn't take that anymore. I have several pins through my hand and a cast over it...yipee.

Yikes, I'm really sorry to hear all of that, Tresa. The good news is your surgery went well, and it sounds like you'll have a complete recovery. I guess it's just getting to that point that's going to be rough.
Years ago, I had a bad comminuted fracture to my right lower leg, thanks to being tossed off a horse. Funny thing is there was no pain, not at the moment I did it, not on the ambulance ride, not when they set it in the ER, not until I woke up from surgery. The first few days, even a couple weeks after surgery were really bad. The only thing that gave me a little relief was extreme elevation. I mean lying on a couch with my leg up on so many pillows it was almost pointing straight up. Maybe you can try something like that with your hand.
It's funny how we all have different reactions to different medications. You're right, it really does suck when the meds you have a high tolerance for are the ones that are supposed to help with pain.
So I'm sending you my best wishes that the pain will continue to diminish day by day and you'll soon be feeling like yourself. Take care.

Tresa, sorry to hear about your surgery. A doctor once told me that bone pain is the worst and hard to control. I had a tri-macular fracture to my ankle and I remember being up all night in the hospital because they couldn't/wouldn't find a pain killer that worked. However, within about 48 hours the pain totally subsided. Hopefully that will happen soon with your discomfort. I do remember that pain.

I was in an accident that shattered my right Humerus. I have a plate and 6 screws in it holding it together. The pain injections I got at the hospital made me throw up constantly- which in turn didn't feel too good on the broken arm...
Day by day the pain got more tolerable. I think the surgery was harder for you because of the insertion of the pins- basically they drill a hole in your bone and screw a pin into it.
For me, the pain from Physical Therapy was far worse than the break or surgery. My physical therapist was a closet Nazi and made me cry 4 days a week for 3 months.
Good luck and I hope you heal quickly!!!

Try to keep the pain down, don't let it get screaming high and the dose you need will be less.
Likely they let you get too "light", had too little narcotic on board when they were waking you up --- a bad side effect of surgery where you are going home the same day --- when they used to keep you in the hospital you could be stoned and in bed and monitored by a nurse---now, for safety, you have to be breathing and alert and OK to go, all the opiates depress respiratory drive.
Plus it's your HAND, so so many nerve endings there, your hand takes up a big part of your brain.
I'm sorry for you, really -- I hate pain, I hope you get some sleep tonite and that it's better tomorrow!

Ask your doctor, but something like Advil or even tylenol really potentiates the narcotic --- makes it stronger, more effective. If you can take both tylenol and the narcotic it will help a lot.

Thanks for the empathy guys. Yesterday I woke up in the AM when the duladid wore off...ouch! I called the ER, long story short, the doc told me to try taking the percocets with
Logan's leftover tramadol
(I can't take NSAIDS). He told me to take 3 percocets with 100mg of tramadol....But, I was cautious and took only 50mg and only 2 of the others. Tramadol is way weaker than duladid but that combination had me more stoned than Layne Staley. My hand finally stopped hurting so much. The only bad thing is I got a bit nauseous, but halfed the tramadol dose and it still works. I have a high tolerance to pain but a constant level 8 was too much!
I would tell you guys about all the beautiful things I saw with my eyes closed last night, but that would be very inappropriate for this forum haha. Don't worry, I've cut back on the dose. I don't need to be numb, just not miserable. Glad I didn't take as much as he said to...my gut told me not too.
If any of my posts seem off lately, its the pain meds lol
Logan has been so sweet to me...he gently nosed my broken hand all concerned....he knows. He laid next to me with his chin on my leg like a total baby. Petting him makes me feel better too. I also have been taking arnica and using ice for the swelling...at first I couldn't even touch my hand w/ the ice.
Logan's still not himself, still lazy...but he just finished the antibiotic and has his check up tomorrow. He stopped shedding his coat and is a bit better fyi.

Remember it's better to anticipate pain than to chase it afterwards.
Sucks with having a broken hand on top of everything else. Glad your boy seems to be getting better.
