Long story short... Logan has a bacterial and yeast infection in the skin. He's itchy but otherwise fine, good appetite and no fever. The vet prescribed cephalexin (antibiotic), Temaril (for itching) and an antibiotic/antifungal shampoo. I'm not a fan of (especially) oral antibiotics and am wondering if the shampoo would possibly be enough to get rid of it. Obviously if not, I could always give the antibiotics. Later what are your opinions on that?
I want him to get better but I don't want to induce any chronic health problems from a drug and or destroy the funtion of his gut. The vet we saw today was not his normal vet and I'm overall not satisfied with the way things have drastically changed since the last time we were there. I'm doubting that all of what was prescribed was even necessary... But I also want him to get better.

While I also don't like using oral antibiotics, I have found that with Drift's yeasty ear infections, I do need them to completely clear the infection. If I don't use the antibiotics, the infection will come back within a week or so full force. If the infection is stystemic a topical treatment won't be enough to clear it.
Give a canine specific probiotic when you give the antibiotics and you should be OK with gut issues. I keep the dogs on probiotics all the time - then double it when they are on meds or their systems are challenged for some reason.
You might want to try this shampoo for the itchies - it works well for my dogs and I LOVE it - http://leerburg.com/shampoobars.php the healer bar is what I use. This company is awesome - their wound and hotspot spray will clear a hotspot in just a couple days - http://leerburg.com/legendaryspray.php

Thank you Kelly. Wow I've never noticed that soap before. Definitely ordering that! I give him Dr Mercola's probiotics for dogs everyday anyway so I'll just up the dosage during and afterwards.
Should I still feed him raw while he's on antibiotics? Or should I feed him cooked chicken?

Thanks too, Kelly for that advice. Summer time is nearing here and then my Pits have always awful scatching attacks with which they hurt themselves and then are full of red spots. Strangely the other two dogs don't have this at all. What the Vet prescribed does soothe a bit but not much. I must definitally try the soap you recommended.
Thanks to you too, Tresa, for openeing that thread. Sounds it might be very helpful for my dogs.

Cristina yw.
This is his second day on the antibiotics. I went to the health food store and got some colloidal silver soap that's has almost three same ingredients as the legendary soap until I can get that. The brand is Heritage. Good stuff, it didn't dry out his skin and the silver should kill the bacteria and yeast.

Thanks Tresa, I will certainlu try this out. Evenif it is mor expensive (because of transport and tax costs) I'd prefer something like that instead of seening those poor creatures scratching and rubbing themselves on the floor so often.

My dogs have all continued on raw when on antibiotics with no problems. You don't want to give raw to a dog that's on antacids as that will reduce the stomach acidity and cause problems with a rawfed dog. Otherwise, I think most other meds are OK for rawfed dogs.

Update: The antibiotics helped sorta, the colloidal silver soap with coconut oil helped probably more. After the antibiotics, he was still itching and still had infection. I began giving him blackseed oil (thinking, can't hurt right?) and a HUGE improvement within days. He is fine now, unbelievable.

I'm so glad it has cleared up. I've had very frustrating struggles with recurring skin infections in dogs.
