I have a 5 mo. old female Mal that will be trained as a PPD. However something has come up that has me a bit puzzled. She has decieded that she only has to comply when she wants to. If I give her a command I expect nothing less...but this is getting old. I work with her on my own 2-3 times a day and then 2x a week with a trainer. She is very smart, I just don't understand why she has started this?! Are we getting into the "teen years"?

What are you working on with this young puppy? Basic manners? Recall?
"If I give her a command I expect nothing less".
Fer cyin out loud, she's a five month old puppy! She could very well be shutting down from to much pressure. Give her a break and keep it fun.

Well, Bob, you said it better than I did.........
That post did sound kinda grim for working with a puppy........... I say give yourSELF a break, too. You are so lucky to have a baby dog with all the fun that comes with one......... Enjoy it!
Here are several DVD's that you should study. You have more to learn than the pup (which is obvious from your post). Don't feel bad this is very common.
Hold off on the trainer and do the work yourself. It's obvious that you need help

Thanks! I'll check those out!
For the others,
We do keep it fun and the sessions are not long (5-10 min. a day and 2-3 a day). Lots of praise and lots of fun..what would be the point if it wasn't fun? I thought that is always a given. It just seemed like she was either getting bored or just didn't want to do this. I still expect a sit when I tell her to sit. I don't think that is unreasonable but I could be wrong, I'll check the videos out. I think I'll take her to the vet too...maybe she isn't feeling well.
What would be the point of me telling her to sit and then her not do it? To reinforce non compliance?
She knows sit very well....just all of a sudden chooses not to do it anymore. She is a happy pup, lots of spunk and has always been fun to work with. That's why I am having a difficult time understanding this.
Follow Ed's advice. Get the dvd's & learn. IMO it is far too early to be putting corrections on your dog for non complience. It is a young pup. Keep it fun & motivate the pup with food or a toy. Maybe the 5- 10 min is too long for this pup. Keep it 2-3 min each time & see if that works out better. It may be too much pressue like Bob said. Train only 1 thing at a time also. Keep it as simple as possible. You have many years ahead to train & work with your dog...it doesn't have to be rushed in any way. Take you time & play allot with the pup & enjoy his being a puppy & all that that encompasses. Enjoy your pup. The training will come.
You must learn to break your training down in small steps , find out what motivates the dog , and be consistent with your training. I have 2 littermate Mals pups the same age as yours, yet both need different training approaches. At 5 months old you are allready to the proof under ,distraction phase , no.
