Logan, my dutchie does great with the tugs, nice grip, drive, focus LOL. But when I "out" him he complies, but also goes into a down...he's clearly confused about it. But it takes me so long to pick up the tug that I can't immediately make him get up (I'm uncoordinated as hell).
Not sure how to fix it. Or should I hold him back, reach down and pick it up (letting him pull like Bernhard Flinks does)? I don't know if my back will let me do that, he's 75-80# very strong...anything more handler friendly would be appreciated.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
Seems like he learned a pattern, you say out, he outs and downs, the game starts again. You can try "sit, out, sit" release and reward (if he holds the sit). Also try to out while you are holding the tug (motionless) so he outs in your hand, release reward before he downs. In your normal routine where he downs after the out, if he outs before he downs, release as soon as he outs so he bites again before downing.
Get him to out in different positions and also change your position from time to time (facing him, on his side, behind him etc), might help.

Just kinda throwing it out but I have a couple of males that will down when they are trying to exercise self control and it was real apparent in the out on bite work.
^^^
That would make sense...that's what I was wondering too about the self control. I down him for pushy behavior sometimes, I wonder if that has something to do with it too.
Faisal, you're saying have him sit/stand without dropping the tug then out and reward right? Almost like a hold and out for the retrieve.
Kelly, he knows stand but I need to work on stand from a down more...he hesitates on it and sit from a down also.
