Conditioning Your Puppy for Grooming
Conditioning Your Puppy to Grooming and General Handling
Feet, Ears, Teeth & Vet Visits
Teaching our dogs to accept being handled is such an important thing for them to learn. It makes going to the vet or groomer a simple task rather than a stressful fight.
We use the exact same marker concepts to check the dogs teeth, look in his ears, grab his collar and brush him. We break the task into small parts and mark/reward each step along the way. In the short video below you will watch Cindy handle Meru using markers. This only needs to take a couple of minutes every day for the dog to accept being handled. This is something we will do for many months.

The Power of Training Dogs with Markers (2024)
This video demonstrates how we condition our puppies (and older dogs) to be handled using our Klimb Tables and Cato platform boards. We use markers to teach our dogs to get on a platform and stay there. Once this is done we use markers and the platforms to check their ears, teeth, and nails, and then groom them. This work also helps on vet visits where the Vet will examine the dog while it’s on a table.
We pulled this video out of a new online course on Leerburg.com titled "Training Dogs using Food Rewards with Ed Frawley". The course has 120 short videos on using high-value food rewards and marker training. This video can also be found our course titled "Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 12 Months".
