How do you deal with the owners of loose dogs that charge up to your puppy?
Owners of loose, undisciplined dogs apparently take it deeply personal when I prevent their charging dogs from "saying hi" to my 3-month old Malinois. It's always "Oh, they won't hurt him" and just now, it was "your attitude needs an adjustment, young lady." I haven't had to kick any (out of a grand total of five dogs) yet, but I can just imagine the city-wide outcry that would follow if I dared to use anything at all beyond body language. These have all been full-sized or full-sized plus obe...

My dog just had puppies and now has mastitis, is it ok to continue to let the pups have her milk? Also, due to some bleeding, my vet recommended that I spay her, what are your thoughts?
Dear Cindy,
I need advice if you can help, I have a new litter of 8 boxer pups, 6 males and 2 females (now 12 days old). The mother has came down with mastitis a couple of days ago, her breast milk was very dark brown red in color in 4 of her teats. Took her in to see the local vet and he x-rayed her and found no unborn pup or left behind placenta. She is still having some vaginal discharge bleeding and was not running a fever (101.2) .
Vet gave her these shots: Dexamethasone Injection,...

We have a 14-week-old puppy who bites at hands and ankes. Because of his size I feel thinkgs are on the verge of getting out of hand. What else would you suggest we do?
Hi Cindy,
We have a 14-week-old German Shepherd puppy who bites at hands and ankles. From reading the articles on the site, I have come to understand that this isn't aggression. But, at 14 weeks, he's almost 40 pounds and, if not aggressive, he's certainly persistent and hard to handle -- to the point that walking him has become extremely difficult.
I have seen in your Puppy video (8 Weeks to 8 Months) that you do not recommend reprimanding a pup for what is basically prey drive. (Befor...

We rescued a 5 year old dog and for the first couple of weeks he was great. He is now growling at my youngest child and it's getting worse. It's hard to know what to do when all the answers I find on your website refer to buying a video. Is there anything you can suggest? We are willing to try anything.
Hello,
I just rescued a 5 year old Lhasa and he was defiantly dissocialized in his last home with health issues. I have two boys who are 6 and 10?who are completely non aggressive and our environment is very tranquil. First 2 weeks were great but Chico has decided that he is a little higher in the pecking order and very loyal to me. Even though we have established a good routine if my youngest walks in the room and is just standing there he will run up teeth glaring and growling, etc... It...

I am unsure how to train the basic "stay" command - whether in a sit or down.
I've purchased all of the Ellis DVDs and the Basic Dog Obedience DVD and the Clicker Training DVD but still am unsure how to train the basic "stay" command - whether in a sit or down. All of the DVDs seem to assume the "stay" command has already been taught to the dog. Anyway, please help me re: how to teach the "stay" command so that I can move on to some of the more skilled obedience commands in the DVDs with my Dutch Shepherd. Thank you!

I had a major crisis this morning, resulting in a death of one of my dogs and bite wounds to myself (I was trying to break up the fight). Should I keep my dogs or euthanize them?
Dear Cindy,
I've written in the past and appreciate the expert advice you gave. I hope you don't mind that I am contacting you again.
I had a major crisis this morning, resulting in a death by pack-attack of one of my dogs and bite wounds to myself (I was trying to break up the fight).
My mother passed this October after which, in my grief, I adopted a new small dog to replace the one I'd had and that had lived here for the last few years.
The 9 pound rescue m...

Could you recommend a prong collar to help with my 8 month old Rottweiler that pulls on walks?
I have an 8 month old Rottweiler, who has an extremely good temperament. He is good with kids and people etc.
I have been doing obedience classes with him with great success. At the classes I use a Herm Sprenger Fur Saver, which I bought from you.
My question is: when I walk him, he tries to pull a lot and when he sees other dogs and people walking. He wants to go to them and play. It's not that he's aggressive, it's just that people get scared, and I want to stop that.
I wanted to k...

My parent's dog growls at me when I hug him, but he follows all my commands and is very obedient. What do you think of this?
I have a basic question for you, and your response will be so much appreciated. My parents have a White German Shepherd named Zeus.
Since Zeus was 9 weeks old, I have been a part of his life, visiting my parents 3-4 times a week and interacting with Zeus.
Zeus is 6 years old as of this past May.
When he was a puppy, I regularly picked him up, but he never wanted to stay in my arms for long, and would squirm and act restless. I'd end up putting him down sooner than I wanted. Other tha...

My dog injured the neighbor girl when she tried to hug and then kiss him. Our nieghbors said it is just an accident but I feel horrible, our dog has never done anything like this before, any suggestions on what we should do?
The other day I was taking our 1 and half year old Basset Hound on a walk when the neighbor child (12 years old) ran up and started to hug him, I notice she was starting to try and kiss his forehead so I hurried up and told her not to kiss him and tried to seperate them but our basset snaped at her. She has a stratch on her face and a cut lip (didn't require stitches). We are not sure if he actually bite her on the lip or just manged to cut the lip with his claws. Our nieghbors (her parents) ...

I've adopted an adult dog and the lady I adopted her from wants to have the dog visit her for a few days from time to time so the dog doesn't feel abandoned. What do you think?
I just recently adopted a 5 year old basset hound from a lady that is getting married and moving in September. She had a special request when I picked up the dog. She wants to let me have the dog but she wants to see the dog from time to time because she is very attached to the dog and she wants to transition away from the dog slowly. To give you a little background, the lady went through a divorce 6 years ago and she was awarded custody of her daughter, but her ex-husband took the dog. That ...

My question is regarding playing tug with your pup vs correcting the pup for inappropriate mouthiness when you are not playing. How do you teach the pup to differentiate?
I am a dog lover and dog owner for most of my life. I currently have a 12 year old bullmastiff who I trained myself, and has always been very well behaved. My training methods have come from personal experience (trial and error) and from just about everything I try to get my hands on to read or watch - and Leerburg has been invaluable.
My question is regarding playing tug with your dog as a puppy vs. correcting your dog for being "mouthy" when you are not playing tug. Obviously, you don't ...

She is a GREAT trailing dog with SAR...the problem I am having is that she is showing some dog aggression towards the other SAR dogs. She rushes over to them with hackles raised, and looms over them. I have a Dutch Shepherd that is great in protection work & muzzle fighting, but when training is done he becomes passive and seem like a pet. What can I do?
Hi Ed, I am a K-9 handler in Georgia and I have a two year old Dutch Shepherd that is a dual purpose dog. He does great in protection work and he does well in muzzle fighting. During the work he is pretty intense but when the training is over he becomes very passive and it seems like he becomes a pet. I wanted to know a way to get him to be a little more aggressive. I would like to get him to bark at anyone who approaches the vehicle right now he will bark when I am away but if someone co...

I am raising a puppy for police work. Should I allow people to pet my pup when I take it out to socialize it?
Is there a certain age where you should stop allowing people to approach and pet your puppy if you want this dog for police work or personal protection. My puppy just turned 6 months. I am not sure if you should continue to allow people to pet him and play with him. Thank you very much for your time. I have purchased 6 or 7 videos from you and they are very educational.

How do you get around rabies vaccinations at the vet when you live in a state that requires them? And are over the counter things at places like Pet Smart okay for parasites and worms?
Hello: Thank you for delivering this valuable information about vaccinations. My question is two part:
1. If you live in a state like we do, N. Carolina, that requires rabies vaccinations, how do you get around that so that you can still take your dog to the vet for other needed services?
2. Do dogs have to be vaccinated to protect from worms and parasites or does that over the counter stuff at Pet Smart work?
Thank you,
Linda and Brad

My 4 month old puppy bites my hands and barks a lot in our apartment. What can I do?
Right now we have very big problems to make our puppy quiet, his whining and barking (he has a very loud and sharp voice.) Every time something is against his wish. What should we do to make him quiet? (Especially because we live in a block flat with neighbors that want silence!)
Another question is about how to make him stop biting our hands, trousers, the leash, etc. (especially our hands)! And the last question I have is about the fact that he already drags in the leash (he is l...

My dog has recently started to become difficult to get into the crate for my wife. Why has this crate behavior changed, and how do we correct it?
Dear Cindy,
Our Keeshond has been crate trained for 2 1/2 years, he caught on right after we got him; he is now 3. Recently, he will not enter the crate for my wife- he will run away and try to hide if possible, and if she grabs him by the collar and puts him in, he screams as he enters the crate. He seems afraid and acts flaky, as if he is conflicted. He will not go in for a treat. However, I still have no problem with him, he crates fine for me. Once he is in the crate, he behave...
