Our 7 month old pup bites my husband's legs when we put the kids to bed. How can I fix this?
Full Question:
Our new dashound mix 7 month old puppy will bite my husband's legs when we put the kids to bed. Only when it's his turn to tuck them in, he does this. Will not do it to me. Why and how can I fix this? Trying to search the web for answers, but not coming up with anything for this. Thanks a bunch if you can help.
Cindy's Answer:
You can take away this pup’s options. I don’t know about you, but in my house I make the rules….not the dogs. Dogs that don’t behave in a way I approve of are not allowed to be loose to make the wrong choices.
Puppies are much like kids, they do what you allow and when they are young they need to be shown how to behave.
Successful puppy (and child) rearing is all about setting things up for success. Don’t allow the pup to have free access to your home, use a crate, an exercise pen and a leash to control him. Puppies in my house are attached to a leash ALL the time until they show me they are trained. This is rarely before 8 or 9 months but I’ve had some that have been on leash with me all the time until they were 15 months. If you take the time to do things right at first, it goes a long way to having a nice family dog.
I’d read the article Ed wrote on The Groundwork to Becoming your Puppy’s Pack Leader.
I would read our biting puppies article.
