My dogs are attacking each other! I don't know what to do, please help!

Full Question:
Hi,

I have 3 three Great Danes. We have the mom, and two of her puppies, which are now two years of age. The mom is still nice to both of them. The two puppies are both boys and have always been such great friends until recently. Our one dog just had bloat and survived the surgery but was really vulnerable when he came home. As soon as he walked into the door at our house the other dog which is the leader attacked him. Every single time that he sees him he attacks him. We put a muzzle on the dominant one that is attacking the other one. Finally today after a big dog fight where the one that had bloat got a lot of cuts, I went online and read almost all of your articles about dog fights. I still have absolutely no clue as to what I should do. Please respond soon. Thank you, Erin

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
You need to separate the dogs and work with each one establishing yourself as the leader. Leaders don’t allow fighting and if you leave the dogs to their own devices they are going to work out pack order without any consideration for you. If you don’t have crates for each dog, then you need to get some.

Start with our groundwork program and Pack Structure for the Family Pet.

I’d also recommend Dealing with Dominant & Aggressive Dogs.

You need to have properly fitted dominant dog collars and possibly muzzles (if you are concerned about more injuries or being bitten). We have directions on how to measure the dog for a muzzle on this page.

If you spend some time reading this section, you’ll see that your problems are very common. I’ve received 6 or 7 emails just today from dog owners with very similar problems. If you don’t teach the dogs your rules, they can’t possibly behave how you want them to.

I hope this helps.
