When do you start training a puppy with the sit, down and other obedience behaviors?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy

I just have a question about when you should start training your puppy with the sit and down etc. Do you start straight at the 8 weeks or do you start with engagement at 8 weeks and after a few weeks of engagement, play and bonding you start training the real things like sit, down , stay etc.

love to hear from you !

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I don't worry much about teaching behaviors right away, I work on engagement and when the puppy is very into that activity and is clearly engaged then I'll start luring a couple of behaviors and make note of how the puppy responds. They are all different. Some puppies are more mentally ready for this sooner and some are physically slower to mature so even if they want to learn behaviors their bodies don't always cooperate the way I would like! haha!

If you haven't watched Raising Your Puppy with Michael Ellis I would highly recommend it.
I work engagement, restrained recalls and food chase recalls a lot at first.
