I plan on using a harness for my new 8 week old Golden Retriever puppy but at what age do you suggest teaching loose leash walking with a collar?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

I will be getting an 8 week old golden retriever puppy and he will be a family pet. I plan on using a harness at the beginning to take him outside, explore etc., but wondering at what age range you recommend beginning formal loose leash walking on a collar. Do I even need a flat collar at this point?

Thank you!
Cindy
Cindy Cindy's Answer:
The age at which I start loose-leash walking varies based on the puppy. A large, rambunctious and forward pup may need to start earlier than a mild, calm, or shy puppy. I typically don't start teaching leash pressure and loose leash walking til around 4-5 months old (again, puppy dependant)

I do let my puppies wear a flat collar just to get accustomed to the sensation of it on their neck even when I am using a harness.
