Can anyone recommend the best starting point for e collar training videos? I noticed that Leerburg has one that specifies "for the pet owner" and one that has two parts and looks a bit more advanced. My dog Cannon (7 month old German Shorthaired Pointer) and I have nearly completed the online Basic Dog Obedience class and are at the point where we will be needing to add corrections soon and I'd like to start learning how to use an e collar. I'm not planning on training him for any kind of competition. My reason for training him is to have a wellbehaved and happy pet and to provide him with mental stimulation and build a positive relationship with him. Given that information, does anyone have a suggestion about which video to start with, or any other video recommendations? I've loved the basic obedience and am excited to move forward with some other leerburg training aids! Any suggestions on e collars for a beginner and a moderately soft dog would be helpful too! Thanks in advance!
you could contact the leerburg staff via email or telephone. I have always found them to be honest knowledgeable people. they should know something about the videos they produce.

is the dog not well behaved?
why do you need to start corrections?
why do you need an e-collar to have a well behaved pet?
why do you need an e-collar to provide mental stimulation?
why do you need an e-collar to have a positive relationship with him?
what am I missing, just curious why an e-collar is required for all those things in a non-competitive, moderately soft house pet?

Peter....his reason for training is what he stated above. Just because he wants to use an e-collar as a part of his training tool kit is no reason to jump on him.
He did not state that he needed an e-collar to attain these goals ...only that he wished to learn to use one .....not the way that you twisted his words. Why do you ALWAYS have to poke people on the eye when you post. Are you really that attention seeking?
I have worked with training pet owners in the use of e-collars. There is nothing wrong with that. I use them on my dogs when off my property for a run in the field,at the beach,in the woods. I can also tell you lthat in the 11 years that I have used them...I have only needed too stim my dogs about 5 times if that many. I use them as a back up..not in place of training.
So I don't see what your rant on him is all about. Rein it in. And try thinking before you post or don't post until you do.

I agree with Anne.
It's certainly true that you may not need much in the way of corrections, or perhaps minimal ones .... some dogs need little more than the withholding of rewards (with a negative marker).
But that has nothing to do with wanting to buy and learn how to properly use one. Your reasons for wanting to buy a good e-collar and to learn their proper use (and you came to the right place for both) are your reasons. I certainly see nothing in your post that should generate a negative response.

They are different. A simple use of the e-collar as a correction for a pet (for non-compliance for a well-trained and well-proofed command, of course) would be taught successfully by http://leerburg.com/318.htm , IMO.
I did not realise providing a link to the information he was seeking and a recommendation to contact the maker of the product for more info and asking some questions that start with "why" and end with "?" ;
was ranting, negative or jumping on someone, are we all that fragile these days?
actually I thought your reply post to me was closer to "jumping on" and "ranting".
I find the way the ME videos teach to use an e-collar was a better fit for my somewhat soft dog. Particularly going back and teaching him leash pressure work helped a lot.
Biggest thing is that if either you or the dog are confused don't proceed until you've got it straightened out. I shelved the e-collar for a bit after our first session with it. Turned out that I needed to do some more reading/watching.
