Just received my order for the training DVD's and leather leash & collar. I love the leather on the collar and leash. I'm sure they will perform beautifully.
Also, I really love the updated version of the Basic Obedience program. I recently watched a vhs copy of your original 82 (?) tape which I found very useful (though I don't think I'd ever leave my dog unattended outside of of a local 7-11 in this town--even on a solid downstay). I'm excited to see how you've updated the program to include marker training and the "yes" command, etc.
You do need your own television program. I think you'd give the dog whisperer a run for his money. It would be terrific to see you work with different dogs each week--taking them through the obedience cycle from start to finish (and maybe focusing on police dog training. You should pitch the idea to the national geographic channel). You could focus on different types of training--small dogs, police dogs, training for agility, etc. There's definitely a huge audience for this type of program. Perhaps you could feature more training sessions on youtube. It really helps to see trainers work with real world problems/problem dogs in addition to demonstrating a command on an already well behaved/well behaving dog...
Anyway, I'm happy to have you as a trusted resource.
Regards,
Lesli

Hello Ed and Cindy,
Since acquiring my new GSD pup I have purchased a number of products from you (videos, collars, and leashes) and I must compliment you on your selection of outstanding products. I have yet to find a local pet store here in Toronto with comparable products.
Also, I have a small DVD library of dog training videos and none compare. In my opinion, the best part about your DVDs are they lack editing. That is, we as pet owners actually see the handler mistakes you make, which you point out. This is not a criticism of your expertise at all; instead, it is very humbling and to me the best training tool. In other words, for you to point out the places you made a mistake is very helpful to the viewer because it shows us what is correct and not correct. Virtually in every instance you indicate a point in time where your timing was a bit off, I was able to say to myself: "that is what I do," and then recognize how I need to change my methods. All the other DVDs I have purchased were edited to show the "trainer" with perfect timing and it frankly does not help the viewer.
Please keep up the spectacular work. And, if/when you happen to visit the Greater Toronto Area to hold a lecture or training seminar, please let me know!
Respectfully,
Jeffrey

First of all, I want to thank you for your site and the tons of knowledge I have gained from it. I find myself coming back to it at least once a week. There is more information than I could ever imagine being able to cover, but I am certainly trying to soak it all in. I have purchased several of your videos and they are my "encyclopedia" for everything to do with my dogs. They have made life so much easier. It seems everyone has an opinion, so much so it's hard to know who to follow, but with the first visit to you site, your methods and beliefs just felt right to me. I strongly prefer the motivational methods, but am by no means a "halti leader or clicker training" kind of gal. Finding a happy medium between force based trainers and "baby boo" (sorry, for lack of a better word) can be frustrating, especially when you are in an area where trainers and helpers are in short supply. Some friends and fellow breeders and myself have formed our own training club, with the help of a couple of good trainers/helpers, and we follow your methods closely. I am proud to say that since we formed our club two years ago, our dogs have "whipped up" the competition at all other local club events. Sad for them and their dogs I know, but hopefully they will see the need for a change and follow suit. I just can't thank you enough! And my dogs thank you too!
Weeks before my puppies were born, I was reading everything I could find about breeding, whelping, etc. No matter how many litters I've had, I still always get excited about each one and feel it's my responsibility to be as well educated as possible. The night my most recent litter was born, November 9th, I found myself sitting at the computer, searching for your "milk replacer" recipe. Once I found it, I woke my fiance and sent him off to the grocery store for all the ingredients, and went back to sit with the bitch and wait for the first puppy to be born.
The first puppy born, a male, was quite a screamer and had trouble nursing. I discovered the bitch was short on milk, so I immediately started feeding her broth and goats milk. A couple hours later, the puppy still hadn't nursed and seemed weak, so I bottle fed him, he perked up, and later began to nurse the bitch once her milk came in. He has been healthy and gaining weight since. Two more puppies were born without incident. A fourth was born dead, somewhat deformed seeming, soft and squishy feeling. Never had one of those before. Two others were born, one a solid black runt, then another large, seemingly healthy, dead female, and finally one last male, healthy. The runt, who I'll refer to as "blue," had trouble eating. I tried helping him nurse, but he seemed to continually grow weaker. Rather than risk losing him, I mixed up your formula with goats milk, yogurt, mayonnaise, a raw egg yolk, and Karo syrup and tube fed him, every four hours, 15cc. By the second feeding, he perked right up. I put him in a box beside my bed, carried him with me everywhere, and fed him for the next day and night, then put him back with his mother, and monitored him closely to be sure he was nursing well. He did fine for a couple of days, but then got weak again and the night before last, he was on his death bed. I've started tubing him again, but unfortunately, another male pup in the litter, who we'll refer to as "burgundy," is down also. He seems to be very dehydrated, weak, and has no desire to nurse. "Blue" will nurse from a bottle, but cannot get nearly enough in each feeding before he gets tired of it and stops nursing. The flow from the bottle is good. If I make it any heavier, I think it might be too heavy and "drown" him. He just seems to want to nurse for about 30 seconds, then fall off the bottle and go to sleep. When he does this, he is only getting 6-8 ccs. "Burgundy" has no desire to suckle at all. I am tube feeding both, even though it seems so harsh on the puppies to continually stick the tube down their throat. Am I being silly? Or can tube feeding long term cause damage? How long should I continue to tube feed? I can't imagine tube feeding every four hours until they are three weeks old, but if that's what is recommended, I have no problem doing the work to save these pups lives. I just don't want to do more harm than good...or prolong suffering if I should let these puppies die, which I certainly don't want to do. The bitch has plenty of milk and the other pups in the litter are thriving. Most of them are actually twice the size of "Blue" now, which causes more problems. When he does try to nurse, the other pups just push him out of the way. "Burgundy" seems content to just lay out flat and die, but "Blue" has fight in him. I feel so sorry for them both. I find myself sitting with them for hours each day, holding and petting them, just wishing there were more I could do to help, and questioning whether I am doing right or wrong as it is. Any advice will be hugely appreciated. I have been lucky in the litters I have whelped so far and have not had any of these sorts of problems. Bottle feeding has been enough in the past and I have seldom had to do that. Vets seem to be useless. They all just say to bottle feed or bring the puppies in for them to hook to IVs, which I have not heard good things from about from other breeders in the past. Typically, dead puppies along with huge vet bills. I have given them fluids subcutaneously. Any advice you can offer would be hugely appreciated. I love my dogs like children and have huge hopes for this litter ....these puppies have been over a year in the making ...losing them now is devastating, especially when it feels like there is so little I can do to help, just watch them die.
Sincerely,
Kristen

My husband and I read your website for months before purchasing a GSD. We purchased "Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months" and "Basic Obedience" after our puppy arrived. We have used your philosophy from day one. We had and still have the best behaved dog on the block. Sometimes he listens better than our daughter. We get many complements on his behavior and we usually tell these people about your website. Our GSD (A.J.) is now 2 1/2 yrs old and we have purchased several more training dvd's Looking forward to viewing them. Thanks for all the useful info.

Dear Mr. Frawley,
First of all, let me say that I normally do not write these kinds of letters. However, the change in our dog over the last month has been so dramatic, I felt that I really needed to thank you.
Our dog, Wilson, is a 16 month old Golden Retriever. He wasn't a bad dog, just head-strong. We've been through several training classes and even passed his CGC. The problem was, he was perfect in class, but at home, he could be a not-so-little monster. He would obey if he felt like it, and his jumping was getting way out of hand. I'm sure he would have outgrown much of this in another year, but meanwhile, I was the only one in the family who still liked him! To make matters worse, he has an orthopedic condition known as Osgood-Schlatter Disease, which means we can't exercise him enough to get his energy out.
About a month ago, I found your website. I started implementing some of your methods immediately and ordered your basic obedience dvd. I also purchased a Dogtra 1700 and your dvd on using an electric collar. Wilson is a hard dog. Although the prong collar worked on him, I really had to yank to get a response. Plus, he'd gotten collar wise. After 2 weeks of conditioning him to the e-collar, we gave it a try. We got the desired response at only 36! Within 2 days, he was no longer jumping on people. 2 days later, he was off leash in the yard, with 100% recall. I've had to "stem" him maybe 15 times total. Amazing.
To make a long story short, we don't have the same dog that we had a month ago. Everyone in the family is grateful for the change. Yesterday, my elderly parents came for a visit, and we were able to leave Wilson out of his crate and off leash. He's finally able to be the part of the family that I've always dreamed of. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. It has made such a difference to us. I only wish we'd found you a year ago.
Sincerely,
Brenda
PS Your "two-ball" game was right on. He's now unbelievably reliable in his retrieve...and drops the ball at our feet!
Dear Ed,
I wanted to take a second to thank you for all of the information you have provided. I found your site one day while I was searching the internet looking for information on bringing a second dog into our home. I can't begin to explain how helpful you have been.
We acquired our first dog in an unexpected way, My husbands brother had gotten her at the ASPCA, and after having her for six months decided he couldn't handle her and told my husband he was going to dump her somewhere and leave her. My husband said he would take her and find her a home. He came home that night and told me this and I was horrified. I had just come home from the hospital with our second son and was sore and tired and the last thing I wanted was another being to take care of, not to mention she terrified me. Every time we had gone to visit his brother this dog had jumped all over me, knocked over our son and growled at us ferociously. She was just so scary. But I resigned to the idea of perhaps just gating her into the kitchen until we found her a home. I don't know what I was thinking. After she was in our house for five minutes, my two year old son was hooked. We kept them away from each other, so he sat on the other side of the gate and talked to her, he showed her all his toys, he was in love, and I knew we were going to have to find someway to live with this monster. After just two weeks of living with us she was a completely different dog. I don't know why. I stay at home with the kids and the only thing I can think is that she likes company. She is amazing. We never taught her anything, she followed commands, she even did tricks for my son. She would wake us up when the baby cried, someone sometime put a lot of effort into her. We've had friends that have gone out and purchased GSD's because of how great Lexi is. And she's still my older sons best friend. So when our younger son got a little older and wanted to play with her it became a fight. Over a year of the kids arguing over who gets to take her out and play fetch, who gets to feed her, who gets to take her to school for "bring your pet to school day" we decided to get another dog. So I did a lot of research and found your site, I can't tell you how helpful it had been in helping us look for a dog. We didn't want a puppy because housetraining just seemed so daunting, So we searched local shelters for another GSD. We finally got a call from our vet and we went to see what seemed like the zillionth GSD. My husband immediately liked this dog so we made an appointment to take Lexi to meet him. One thing lead to another and "Baxter" became a member of the family. He was a terror. He wasn't like lexi at all, he destroyed everything he came near, if left alone for a second the entire room was flipped upside down. Back to your site I went and Baxter became attached to my hip for the duration of the day, and his crate became home in home for him. It only took about a month and he was reformed, of course, I had made the mistake of taking him in the bathroom with me when we were training him so I had set myself up to never pee alone again, but that was ok. Unfortunately, Baxter was epileptic and began having seizures often and we eventually had to put him to sleep. I was pregnant with twins and was destroyed at the loss of the dog that had literally been at my heels all the time. You don't realize how much company they really are until you're not tripping over them. Lexi didn't fare well at the loss either, she was losing weight and moping around. Once again we started searching for another dog, but this time, for me.
One day we were at a shelter a few counties over and there was this smallish short haired ugly dog hiding in the back of his kennel. I asked if I could see him and they brought him out. They put us both in a little room and left. He wandered over to me like he was exhausted and sat down, and put his head on my leg. As soon as I started petting him he perked right up. I made an appointment to bring the kids back to see him the next day. My husband was away for the week and I was a little nervous about introducing a new dog without him, so I reread your site and just decided to go for it. Fred and Lexi hit it off right away and just like Baxter I had another dog at my heels. I took him to the vet and my vet informed me that my little short haired ugly dog was in fact a pit-bull. I would have freaked out about that except Fred and lexi were already getting along so well i figured we'd be ok. We did a lot of research, and we socialized the heck out of Fred. He's a little version of Lexi, and we love them both. My dog philosophy is the same as my kid philosophy, don't raise kids or dogs you can't live with, and you're articles have helped me so much. I purchased your obedience video when we first got Baxter and re-watched the whole thing when we got Fred. We even bought one for a friend of ours when she got her first dog. We don't protection train our dogs or anything like that, but its nice to have dogs that listen, they add to your life in a positive way, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Lexi has taught me that dogs are not always what they seem, and you taught me how to have more dogs like Lexi. Thanks!

I know that you get hundreds of e-mails a day, but I had to share this story with you. I have a six month old Miniature/Medium Labradoodle. I live in Sedona, Arizona and don't have access to very many trainers. "Nash" and I have been working with someone who is a "yank and crank" as you call it. She was trying, but somehow or other she was always seeing fit that if he didn't respond to me right now that he needed correcting. Remember that my puppy is only now six months old. Fortunately, she didn't work with him directly. I did and she gave direction. Anyway, in my search for a better training method I stumbled upon your web site. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF THE INFORMATION!!! I was watching the first video that I purchased from you, Your Puppy Eight Weeks to Eight Months. Nash and I were in our gym. He was laying on his pillow while I was working out. Well....let me tell you that when he heard your voice, he perked up. He got off of his pillow and sat in from of the television. He watched for a while, got bored and didn't pay attention much. But, when we got to the part where you were showing how to train sit and down, he got up and obeyed your commands while watching TV. It was the silliest thing that I have seen in a long time. He only did it the first time through the video and he hasn't obeyed any commands in the Basic Obedience DVD, but when he hears your voice, he runs right to the television. Your voice is a magnet for my dog. Your information has already made a tremendous difference in the demeanor of my dog. Thank you again so much for sharing your knowledge. I wish that I lived near you so that I could bring Nash to you.

Ed,
You probably get these all the time, but I wanted to write a short note to say that your videos, your philosophy of dog training, and your equipment (combined with a little work on my part and good temperament on the part of my dogs) have added up to two dogs that are a pleasure to have as companions.
I got a GSD and a Boerboel about 18 months ago. Both were grown dogs with what seemed like good temperaments, but only a minimum amount of obedience training. The GSD had been owned by a family that emigrated and was returned to the breeder. The Boerboel was a "rescue dog," reportedly owned by a breeder who went out of business.
My dogs are now 100% obedient on basic commands and the recall, and I can take them out on walks without leashes, confident that they will walk at heel unless told they can roam, return instantly on recall, and stop at intersections, regardless of distractions. I do keep the e-collar on them just in case. (In practice, I often carry their leashes because some people are made uncomfortable by unleashed dogs).
They don't jump on people, they don't beg, they're calm but aloof with strangers, they bark to alert on strangers outside the gate, but they're accepting of people once they're allowed on to the property. Guests who come to my house or who see them on the street frequently comment about how well-trained they are and ask me who trained them. I'm proud to say I trained them myself, but I always recommend your website and videos.
Thanks for your help!
Don

I just want to say thank you so much for the products you have to offer. I’ve been trying to ease back on my impulsive buying, but your items have lured me for so long, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! (And it’s only come to me within the last hour. Haha.
First off, your delivery.
It was totally awesome that when you said a few days, it meant a few days. Living in Alaska, I usually add on a week to whatever they say it’ll take to deliver, no matter what service, ground or next day. But it took four days, which include a weekend, from the time of my purchase online to the delivery in my hands.
The prong looks and feels excellent. There is no contest to the ones in the stores with this one. I’m glad I chose this route, and got my money’s worth. I tried it on my pup as well, and it fit like a charm. Now to see how well she’ll adjust to it.
The leather collar is beautiful, and it’s much softer than I thought it would be. I’d almost gladly wear it myself. But that would be kind of weird.
I’m a complete bought customer now, with the informative articles I’ve read and the advice from the forums I’ve gotten, even before I had my pup. She’s growing into a wonderful, well behaved pup, and with all the classes we’re going to, the information I take and apply to our lives from your site, and my own little touch, I’m sure she’s going to grow up just fine.
I can’t thank you enough.
P.S. She went bonkers over the liver biscotti treats.

Just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you, for helping me learn how to handle my rescue dog and introduce him to my two cats! Although we still have some training to do, I feel it has been a huge success.
I read everything I could get me hands on, and read them again, and again. I purchased your Basic Obedience DVD, then headed to our six week training class offered by the rescue group. I emailed you with questions and you responded with just the right thing to do. I'm completely amazed at how this dog listens to and responds to me when it comes to his behavior around the cats. I was so scared in the beginning, but slowly gained my confidence. My motto was that I would NOT let him harm my cats!
I kept telling people that this was probably the hardest thing I had ever tried to do, although looking back now, it seems like it was a breeze, but that must just come with the passing of time! Thanks so much for all your help. I've already recommended you to a friend who has purchased a couple of your products, and I will continue to sing your praises whenever I get a chance!

Mr. Frawley,
Thanks for providing so much information. Your website and videos (while expensive) have taken my dogs and I to the next level of training. You have provided me with the tools to train effectively. Of course, lacking experience, I unfortunately still make mistakes, but thanks to your website, they are minimized and contained to small fixable errors. Also I have the ability to see what the mistakes were, so as to improve on them in the future. Keep up the good work.

Dear Mr. Frawley,
I just wanted to let you know that I used your methods of training with my dogs. I read your article in your catalog and used the basic principles of your training. THEY WORK! I have two male Irish Wolfhounds (dogs not known for performing well in obedience classes), but respond to basic courtesy and fairness. Although they are not perfect, they do not jump on people, get on the furniture, or take food off counters. They let people go ahead of them through a door and do not beg for food. I totally agree with your categories of trainers and your methods are the most fair and get the best results. Thank you for the advice and the great leashes. I have two and they are stronger than my wolfhounds. They also came to me already broken in which I appreciate.
Sincerely,
Sandy

Just wanted to drop you an email to say how interesting and Informative your website is, as a result of reading many of your articles I have ordered a couple DVD's your basic obedience dvd and the use of electric collars.
I have been working on obedience with my two dogs for the last year and we are making progress, everything here in the united kingdom is based on reward based positive reinforcement training which is fine for teaching but I often wondered what happens after six months of training a behavior and the dog refuses. None of the trainers or writers here seem to discuss corrections or how to use them properly.
I am extremely pleased I came across your site as I am now learning something new about constructive dog training instead of reading the same statements written by different people for the last year.
I also ordered your e collar training dvd. This is a red hot subject in the uk there are people who swear by them and others that hate them and want them banned, no gray area in between. I don't know that much about them myself so therefore I remain on the fence I don't want to form an un informed opinion about a training device I have not seen used properly in action. So therefore your dvd seems a great way to learn the truth about them and then I can make a informed decision.
I have enjoyed reading your site you seem to be a no nonsense guy who only says what he means and you freely talk about all sides of training, positive reinforcement and negative so I value your opinion.
I will keep reading your website and look forward to getting my DVD's.
Many Thanks,
Richard
Ed's Response:
Richard,
Thanks for the kind words. I agree that the state of dog training in the UK is at a critical stage. Your citizens have allowed the un-educated to dictate methods of training that are simply wrong – this is not a matter of opinion it’s a simple fact.
You will see in the remote collar dvd that when used properly it’s a great tool. These people who are against it miss the fact that any tool can be abused. I can abuse a dog with a flat leather collar.
Those people who say “all positive” training is the only way are people who have little to no experience with dominant dogs. They have their head in the clouds and they lack experience.
I just finished a dvd on ESTABLISHING PACK STRUCTURE Its off being pressed - I would recommend this to you.

ED,
We had a mini pom give birth to two little ones, then she passed. We are trying to save these darlings. The vet gave us the Naturall-c which did not appear to help them gain strength. Out of desperation I searched online and found your formula rushing around to get to Wal-Mart to get the ingredients, I immediately started feeding the pups your formula and they have responded to it marvelously. My husband and I are pulling shifts to maintain their feedings over 24 hr period after one day they slept 4 to 5 hr straight allowing for much needed rest for us. We are so grateful that you love animals so much that you offered this formula for free to others like me searching for hope and help. They are growing and still alive five days old weighing only ounces. My heart is still grieving the loss of the mother, however it leaps with joy knowing the babies have a chance to bless us with their love, with your help, again many thanks to you and may god bless you in your work.
Grateful to you,
Linda & Gary

Hi Ed,
I don't even know how I stumbled across your site, but I have spent all afternoon reading through the valuable information you provide. In my case you are preaching to the converted, but there is always something new to learn, and I am so glad to have found someone so eloquent whose philosophies about dogs are so consistent with my own. I often feel that I am in a shrinking minority.
I mostly wanted to thank you for making so much for your site freely available. It's obvious that you are really trying to help people build better relationships with their dogs. We have three rescue dogs of our own (two aussies and a border collie and I take foster dogs for the local herding dog rescue. Your site
is going to be invaluable when working with some of the more aggressive animals that we get, as this is one area where I still feel unsure of myself as a pack leader and trainer.I will cherish your line "I don't walk my dogs to make friends" forever. Until recently we lived in the city and I had to bring the dogs to a local park for daily exercise and training. Groups of other owners would stand around chatting while their dogs ran amok, and I would ignore them while my dogs ignored their dogs (until their ball was inevitably stolen, at least). I once overheard another owner saying "that girl is always such a bitch" and I had to smile. Indeed I am.
Thanks again.

Hi Cindy,
I just wanted to drop you a line again and say thank you so much for your advice in July 2007. I have used many of the dvd's that Ed has produced and your names are used so often around here that strangers might think you live here. Your advice about being a pack leader and keeping her away from people has worked very well.
{If you have a dog that you know does not enjoy being social or has weak
nerves or is aggressive the best advice is to train your dog and be a good
pack leader and keep other dogs and people away from her. She is telling
you LOUD and CLEAR that she doesn't want the contact.}She has developed so much confidence in me and herself and we have really been able to enjoy going out. This morning we woke to a couple of inches of snow so we had to go for a ride. We live on the border of the Allegheny National Forest so we are close to trails and (empty now) campgrounds. Macha is trained for the car and exits the hatch back when I get her 15" drag line on and tell her ok. She waits at small bridges and gates or if she gets too far ahead. She smells and runs and comes when I call. She downs and stays, even when I didn't notice it was a mud hole. She runs like crazy in the ball field and wasn't afraid at the playground. She went to the rivers edge and actually put a paw in and didn't balk, she has been terribly afraid of water. She now sits and stays at a spot in the living room doorway when someone comes to the door. Then if I need to, I send her to her crate. I am now training her to go straight to her crate when we come in the back door from her "home" outside area. This has helped a lot with the muddy footprints through the house and since I don't have to scrub the carpet every day I have more time to train. I watched the new dvd yesterday "establishing pack structure with the family pet" and watched you train in the grooming part. As of this morning I am touching her ears, which she is very sensitive about. Again thank you, thank Ed. I am so proud of my dog. Oh..., I feel so good about us now that I am getting a pup tomorrow and yes I have the puppy dvd !! I will not make the mistakes I made with Macha ( or maybe just a lot less, cause I am not perfect!).
Thanks.

I just wanted to email you to thank you for saving the life of my Lhasa Apso with your excellent training videos. We purchased the aggressive dogs dvd because we were on our way to kill our dog for attacking a child two times and thanks to your training advice, we have been able to obedience train her and save her life. She has responded very well. We did not use the "dominant dog collar" and we have used a prong, which does stimulate her and make her mad. At first, she looked at me almost with an evil eye like "what are you doing to me?" But, now, after just a little bit of training, she is on her way to rehabilitation. She is no longer allowed on furniture. She actually waits at the door for our command instead of darting out the door and attacking everything that moves. Also, last week, she accidently got free and stayed right in our yard because she is always attached to a leash and I guess she thought she was attached. It is amazing how well she has responded to your training. Thanks again for all your dedication and hard work in making the training videos. They are greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Melissa

the way, the picture I sent you was BEFORE we started training her.

Hello Mr Frawley,
I just wanted to thank you for stocking and selling the book, "Purely Positive Training, Companion to Competition" by Sheila Booth. I got my 'bred for Schutzhund' doberman bitch at 8 weeks in Sept of 06. This book was recommended to me, but was not available new on amazon or ANYWHERE. I ended up purchasing a used copy for a ridiculously expensive price, just to have it. It is one of the BEST , most complete training manuals I have seen. And I have purchased many. It is great to see it is available at your site. I am purchasing a few as gifts, and because my copy is extremely 'dog-eared'. ;-) I must tell you again (as I have in the past emails) Thank you for having such a wonderful web site, with so much free information. Even without purchasing anything, you can get pretty much get almost all you need to know about owning a dog and most of the problems that can arise. But, I have purchased many of your DVD's, and find them extremely detailed and well thought out.. Without finding your site, I would have had to get rid of my aggressive, highly driven doberman. Even though I owned dobermans in the past, I never realized the difference between a 'working dog' and a regular dog. You might want to put up some information on the difference for anyone considering purchasing a dog who was bred for working and the drive, as opposed to a, for lack of a better term, regular dog. I thought I knew (having owned dobes before and worked for vet and in kennels in my youth) what to expect when I got a 'working' dog'! Boy was I in for a surprise, it is a very different type of animal. Thank you for making our lives together so successful. Without you, she would not be with me now. (18-months old) I just had no clue how to deal with her , she was so... Out of control. Of course, as you know, it was completely MY fault, not knowing just HOW to handle her properly. With your help, I now do. I cannot express what you have done for us, it is wonderful.
Thank you.Sincerely,
Susan

Ed,
I just wanted to say I really enjoy you're training DVD's and equipment. Last year I purchased some training lines from you, they have been inside my training bag ever since. Two days ago I was working with my full grown German Shepherd, when a stray ran up two the fence. I went to give a correction when the line I bought, from a pet store snapped in two (it was still new). I can only thank my lucky stars we were on the inside, needless to say I threw every line I had in the trash except yours. (AND BOUGHT 4 MORE) You can't replace quality, when you need it most. Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Charles

Dear Ed,
I do not know how to thank you, the first time I purchased one of your training video, I thought it is like other training video, but let me tell you honestly you are the best in the west.
After watching the first video (focus and drive), I was proud of myself hearing people telling me how my dog has been prepared for defense work, I would like to tell every one it is really fantastic watching your article on dog training, especially your plain and clear English.
Thank you very much!

Mr. Farwley,
Just a note to tell you that I am very happy I ordered you’re "Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months" and "Basic Obedience" DVD’s. I am the owner of a new Border Collie Puppy. I came by your web site by chance in looking for in formation on training Borders. I have been an OK pet trainer of my dogs in the past. I was doing a number of the things you teach by instinct. But I knew I needed more with a working dog like a border. In just a few weeks my new dog is doing very well. We are following your guidelines and are letting him learn at his own pace. I am ordering your 101E DVD today. I hope to do Obedience competition when he gets ready. This is just an other testimony to the realities that your training is not breed specific.
Thank You,
CV

Dear Cindy and Ed,
Thank you very much for the info. The website link, potty training eBook and the 3 DVDs have been great. Armed with your experience to guide me I am much more confident in the developing relationship with Rocky. I now know how to deal with the biting and potty oops. I had been doing some things right but also knew I didn't understand dog behavior enough to step in and take the leadership role in a way that made sense to Rocky. He has responded beautifully to a firm no and pop with the leash for biting hands (instead of the toys). Also the potty oops we were having had to do with allowing him to play too wild in the house. Now we leash him and keep the indoor activity calm when outside the crate... so far no more potty mistakes. (We had the rest of the potty training equation down) Hooray! I am enjoying my puppy instead of dealing with a peeing/ biting little hell hound.
Thanks so much,
Tracy

Dear Ed and Cindy,
Just wanted to send a quick email to compliment not only your site, with its wealth of information available, and your message board, but also your office staff...Ashley in particular.
I've been on the site for several weeks now, mainly reading and asking a few questions, as we were initially looking for a dog to join our family, and the search has come to an abrupt and sooner than planned end with a pug soon to join us this weekend or next. I've had to reassess my so called knowlege of dog training and come to realize that everything I knew was wrong, lol! Thanks Ed, for making this info so available. I am now confident that I'm on my way to having the tools needed to ensure that a dog is trained and happy in our family.
I called today to find out about shipping and paying for the Establishing Pack Structure With The Family Pet DVD and Basic Obedience DVD, since I am in Canada and don't have a credit card. I spoke with Ashley. She is wonderful. Friendly, knowlegable, patient...what a fantastic person to have in your office. Too often as a consumer, I find that customer service is lacking. You not only have a great site, and I'm betting great products, but excellent customer service.
Sorry if this is too long, but too often people are quick to complain, yet rarely compliment. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciated speaking with Ashley today, and the assistance and suggestions she had for me. I've never dealt with Western Union, so she explained that I would need additional info and emailed what would be needed to me immediately, as well as checking out the different shipping options and pricing.
Expect to be shipping to Edmonton, Alberta Canada in the next week or 2! (I was injured at work, so I have to budget, lol!)
Thanks again. I look forward to having an ongoing relationship with Leerburg!
Sincerely,
Melissa

I've been buying your products and videos for many years now and always think of your web site as first source to look or send someone to first when searching for training or breeding solutions. I had Rottweilers for 20 years and gradually changed over to Standard Poodles, all competition and breeding dogs. No matter what breed or what use a dog serves, understanding and knowledge of basic care and training are a must. Your website is so informative in every way, for beginners to advanced in every aspect of dog interests. Thank you so much for your fine efforts and wonderful products you have available.

Hi Ed,
Tim has been in touch with you recently regarding questions about training a working dog with markers. You have been such a great help, thank you so much! We had held a Malinois puppy from Ivan Balabanov and were trying to get as prepared as any one could be. I went this weekend to pick her up and we wanted to send you a picture of our new addition: Zyla Ot Vitosha. As you can see, she loves the Orbee ball! We also wanted to tell you that we love all the products. Thank you for having great quality products available.
Thank you again for all of your help,
Michelle & Tim

Hi Cindy,
A while back I emailed you about my German Shepherd/Formosan Mountain dog mix who is dominant and handler aggressive. He’s a 2 year old dog that I rescued 6 months ago who had difficulty being placed due to his “mouthing” and “rough playing” habits. I like challenging dogs so I adopted him. Regardless of his dominance and aggression challenges, I adored his drives and willingness to learn. But I could not for the life of me get a prong on him. He would bite or run whenever he saw the prong collar. I had been using marker training for his basic obedience and you mentioned to me to use it for his prong…well it worked! It took only a week to get him to wear it and have me put it on and off of him whenever I choose. And now he willingly steps into it when its time for training or a walk or going to obedience classes. BTW, in addition to the 3 DVDs I purchased from Leerburg, I do use an obedience school with a k-9 police dog trainer here in CA who uses similar approaches to Leerburg (a combination of praise/reward, compulsion/correction and distraction “obedience and control of your dog in your world, any time and in any place”).
I want to also say thank you so much for all the information on your site. Because of your site, I know my dog is handler aggressive, that used in the wrong way, the prong stimulates him into higher drive. Used properly, he works to do his job for me. I’ve seen my dog go from overly amped up on the prong to overly submissive and will stop working. It’s a constant judgment call with him as he’s right in the middle of being hard and soft! I’ve also been training his “bite” using a bite pillow (which of course all his toys are put away thanks to your suggestions).
I do everything suggested in the pack leadership and dominant/aggressive dog DVDs and things have really improved for him. I used marker training to train his “out.” He LOVES his bite pillow. He LOVES his tugs. He has a strong firm grip. And I will continue to work these as his “mouthing” has all but almost disappeared. Thanks to your site, I recognize that he has a huge prey/play drive and loves using his mouth so instead of correcting him for it, I’ve redirected it, turned a negative into a positive. Once his obedience gets more consistent among other dogs in an obedience class (distraction of other dogs is his biggest issue), I would like to start working him in personal protection. The clinic I go to offers this type of training and one day in class, demonstrated a helper in a bite suit with a personal protection dog doing his job. My dog never saw a bite suit before but I could not believe his reaction to it. he lost interest in any other dog and zero’d in on bite suit helper and wanted to play the game. He barked much differently than he does when he’s just reacting to other dogs and “amped up” under distraction. It was definitely a deep bark, with tunnel vision focus on the helper in the suit. I can definitely tell, this is something my dog wants to do and so while I’m training his obedience under distraction, I’ll continue to work his bite and out on the pillow and tug.
Though he’s dominant and handler aggressive (his handler and re-directed aggression is almost gone), he’s got to be one of the “easiest” dogs to teach anything to. he learns with or without food and ALWAYS recognizes my marker word (“Yes!”). His recall is almost perfect. I’m still working it under a very high level of distraction. But generally his recall is like a magnet to me. Again: all due to your advice on your site and DVDs.
There are so many things I’ve learned on your site that have helped tremendously. We also rescued a 2nd dog (ok, not the smartest thing to do right away especially having a dominant/aggressive dog) but it was very easy to teach him not to be food possessive or any other type of possessive (person, toy, etc.) around this dog because I follow the advice about dominant dogs. When feeding the dogs together, they must work for their dinner (down stays until I give the release). and my dominant shepherd mix (the other is a sweet husky) knows that when he finishes his bowl, he can do one of 2 things, look at me or leave the room, never allowed to even look at my other dog. He learned very fast and neither dog is food possessive, though I would never make the mistake of leaving the room when they are eating. I also pet them both when they eat food or bones and neither growls or bites. I love the advice on your site. It works every time for me. The food possession advice makes so much sense to me (not taking it away). I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to reach inside his mouth to take something dangerous out (like a chicken bone he once found) and let me do it w/o a bite. The advice on your site is fabulous. And because of it, a dog that was almost sent to dog sanctuary, that was termed “unadoptable” may have his dream job someday in personal protection. I can tell he wants to work. I can see it every day in his play. He wants to know the rules, play by them and win.
I’ll be purchasing the building drive and focus DVD soon (when the economy is a bit picked up and my own business is doing better, I’m on a spending freeze for a bit)… I can’t wait to get it and really start working with his natural high prey/play drives.
So thank you again for your site and suggestions (especially marker training for the prong). It’s fabulous and I continue to share your site with all my friends with dogs.
Kind regards,
Julie
