I went to my first Schutzhund seminar in October 1974. I was instantly hooked on protection dog training. During the next 10 years I went to every seminar I could find in this country on training protection dogs, Schutzhund dogs, and police service dogs. In 1983 I produced my first bite training video titled "Protection Training the Beginning with Bernhard Mannel." In the 13 years that followed I learned so much more about protection training that I was forced to update that old video and pass this new information on to my customers. This is being done through this new training tape "The First Steps of Bite Training."

Training Defense is the most misunderstood area of protection dog training. This is evident by going to any Schutzhund trial or looking at half of the Police Service dogs in this country. This training video is intended to help new (and old) trainers. Many experienced trainers get caught up in traditional sport dog training, which is weak in the defensive areas of training. This video will help all trainers recognize and get a dog started in the training of its defensive drive. The goal of the training is to bring a young dog further along in its fight drive development.”

Using a Narcotics detection dog (drug dogs) is "the most unobtrusive method available to search a suspects vehicle, house, or belongings." The goal of every narcotics dog handler should be to eliminate false indications by his dog (an intentional false indication could lead to violation of a persons constitutional rights). This video emphasizes training techniques that will provide you with a dog that not only finds drugs but also a dog that will not false hit on cutting agents and other odors.

Police canine training programs need to simulate actual street situations. In this 1 hour and 33 minute video, we set up a number of common scenarios that have actually happened with Canine Teams. We show what happens when the average Police Service Dog is placed in these situations. We recommend several changes to training programs that will compensate for past mistakes. You will see how these changes result in a safer situation for the officers and their dogs.

This video is designed to show the handler exactly what the judge expects from the dog and the handler for a Companion Dog "B". We include video of an actual "B" exam along with computer generated diagrams to make it simpler to understand exactly what is expected from the handler. ** The rules in this video are NOT up to date. It would be impractical to produce a new video each time the rules change. If you want the current rules, then you need to get a rule book from Schutzhund USA. The methods used in this video still apply even though the rules are not updated.

The purpose of this video is to teach trainers how to handle a dog in a Schutzhund I trial and get the maximum number of points possible. Many times handler errors and not dog errors result in points being lost at a competition. Many times it is handler errors that make the difference between the high scoring dog and the number two placed dog. There are times a dog fails a competition when it could have passed if the handler had only done something a little differently.

This tape is intended for the person that has never done agitation or helper work before. If you have a friend, relative or club member that wants to learn how to take bites, this tape is the place to start. It is not a dog training tape, it is a people training tape for training a new Schutzhund helper.

This is a handler training video, not a dog training video. It's a video that explains how we raise and socialize our puppies. If you are looking for a video on how to train a working puppy - this is not the video for you. There is a difference between how we raise a working puppy vs. how pet owners raise their dogs. Ed Frawley, the owner of Leerburg Video and Kennel, has bred and whelped over 350 litters of German Shepherds since the mid 1970's. He owned and operated one of the most professional breeding programs in the country for German Shepherds. It shows exactly how to tube feed a weak puppy and it provides a medical program to follow for the entire litter.

This is one of our most popular training videos for new puppy owners. Over 35 years Ed Frawley bred close to 400 litters of German Shepherd puppies. He knows what new puppy owners need to learn to end up with a calm quiet happy dog in the house. The DVD was updated in October 2010 to reflect how Ed and Cindy raise puppies in their home.

This video is 1 Hour and 20 Minutes long and takes the viewer step by step through muzzle fighting. The reason we chose the term “muzzle fighting” is because there is a real difference between what we show in this video and what happens when someone just throws a muzzle on a dog and sends him after a helper without a sleeve. If a dog is genetically capable of muzzle fighting, we will show you how to train it to use its body to knock knock out an individual.

This police k9 training DVD was done with the help of Kevin Sheldahl. Kevin is an International Police Dog Judge for WPO, DPO and PSP. He is also a full time K9 handler and head of K9 training for a large Sheriff’s Department in the South West. The goal of our video is to show new police K9 trainers how to approach the task of training the building search. We will show handlers how to teach their dogs that the primary tool a dog must learn to use during a building search is his nose.

This tape is directed towards the real world where police departments or professional dog trainers contracted by police departments do not have years to finish the training on a dog before it goes out on the street. It is not uncommon to take a selection tested dog and finish him in 6 to 12 weeks (depending on the dog, the department and what is expected before the dog is allowed to work). For this reason the bark & hold training needs to be done quickly. The training methods in this video have that in mind.

The directed search is one of the more important exercises that police K9 handlers must teach their dog. It’s used in building searches and areas searches. If a service dog is to work safely off leash it must know the directed search. In today’s society K9 handlers must have complete control over their dogs at all times. The training program for the directed search is an excellent way to accomplish this goal.

In this 2 hour and 10 minute video, Michael Ellis teaches dog handlers the fundamentals of training the object guard for the various ring sports. The goal of the video is to show dog handlers how to establish a good foundation for this exercises.

I have been doing artificial inseminations on my own dogs since the late 1980s, I don't know how many times I have done an AI but certainly between 250 to 300 times. I currently have a success rate of well over 90%. Our 1 hour DVD shows how we collect a stud dog an immediately inseminate one of our females at our kennel.

This tracking dog DVD was filmed over a 3 year period in Germany & America back in the 1990’s. It is one of the most comprehensive studies ever done on sport tracking (foot step tracking). This video only uses motivational methods to teach a dog to track. While we discuss the difference between motivational tracking and forced tracking, we do not teach any force in this video.

This video was filmed in Alberta, Canada at the police dog training center for the RCMP. The RCMP instructors are the best tracking dog instructors in the world. The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) catch 45% to 50% of all the people they track (this includes suburban and urban tracking). If a suspect runs in the country, they catch 95% of them. If you are a K-9 officer who trains his service dog with food & a ball you know that you only catch 3% or 4% of the people you track.

The hardest part about training a police tracking dog is finding track layers. Every time you ask a new person to lay tracks you have to go through the same ritual. You explain all of the basics and all of the terminology for what needs to be done. This video is designed to train your track layer. We cover how to walk a straight leg, double laying tracks, kicking corners, marking high to low vegetation, marking road crossings, marking fence crossings, and where to lay articles, along with much much more.

This video was done with the RCMP in Canada. In it we train a dog to track in a suburban and urban environment. In Level 1 Tracking (Video 205) we taught the dog to track in the country. The reason all police dogs must first learn to track in the country is because the country is relatively distraction free. We actually teach the dog to track in the country and then use a large part of that work to train in Level II & III teaching the dog to deal with the distractions of the city.

This video was filmed at the Dutch Federal police dog Schools in Nunspeet and Rotterdam Holland. It deals with hard surface tracking (HST). In this video, you are going be able to see what can be accomplished with the right dog and the right training. The instructors in these two schools are some of the best trainers in the world at hard surface tracking.

This DVD teaches people how to desensitize their dogs to their horses. In our step-by-step program we teach our dogs to accept our horses as part of their family pack. This DVD was filmed over a 2 1/2 year period. We followed the training steps for one of our personal dogs (CJ). Many top Agility trainers are learning the value of teaching their dogs advanced tug skills. This DVD is an in-depth, step by step study of Michael’s system on establishing the foundation of biting skills without a helper or decoy. Trainers only need a friend or family member that will handle a bite wedge, a bite tug or a high value toy to assist them in rewarding correct behavior. The value of the training methods we show are that the dogs learn correct behavior and capping skills at a lower drive level. In the training steps, Michael explains how to start the training for each skill. He also explains when to add drive and stressors for these various protection skills. When these things are done correctly the work with decoys goes much faster and with fewer mistakes.

This DVD deals with Michael Ellis' system of training competitive dogs to jump. The DVD has chapters on the hurdle, the long jump, and the Palisade (which is used in the Ring Sports.) Michael Ellis’ system of dog training has its foundation in marker training (operant conditioning). When Michael teaches the jumps, it is all done through motivational methods. There are no corrections.

The DVD opens with an excellent lecture on the concept and training steps for the send away by Michael Ellis. This lecture was filmed at Michael's school on advanced obedience in California. There is a chapter on working with puppies and a chapter on when to use touch pads vs a toy. There will also be a chapter on training the whistle back (for the ring sports). There is an excellent section on retraining a Schutzhund dog to Michael's system of training the send away and an excellent chapter in which Michael reviews his system.

The Foundation Fundamentals program is designed for all dogs at any skill level, whether a puppy or an adult. To achieve your goals in agility, you need a solid working relationship with your dog and a clear and consistent communication system, often referred to as a "handling system." A handling system is no more than a set of verbal and physical cues that tell your dog what you want him to do next. Conflicting cues or missing links in your communication system will limit what your team can achieve in the sport by causing a lack of confidence (the dog slows down, stops, or even leaves the ring) or frustration (the dog spins, barks, or tries to bite the handler). With clarity and consistency in your communication system, your dog will be more confident, focused, and sure of his job, which will allow you and the dog not only to achieve more, but also to enjoy the game more.

In 1985, I saw my first HGH nationals in Europe. This is the type of sheep herding German Shepherd Dogs do the best. It is also the style of training the AKC has based their herding instinct testing and course "C" on. I originally felt that the dogs did this work so naturally that they had to be doing it from instinct and not training. I was wrong. Since then I have collected enough information from Karl Fuller of Kirschental Kennels in West Germany to produce this tape.
