Understanding the 3 Styles of Heeling
In this quick video, we break down the three main styles of heeling used in dog training: loose leash walking, contact heeling, and competition-style heeling. Whether you're a pet owner trying to walk calmly on a leash, a trainer working on precision, or prepping for the ring—understanding the differences between these styles can help you choose the right one for your training goals.
Understanding the function and purpose behind each style is essential for effective, goal-based training.
This video clip came from our Basic Dog Obedience course. This self-study course has 8 hours of video plus very detailed written training content. This course will cover the basic philosophy of reward-based training for sit, down, the foundation of coming when called, yuck/leave it, and walking on a loose lead. Additionally, you'll receive advice on managing your dog in your home. This course is taught by Ed Frawley, who owns Leerburg and has been training people how to train dogs for over 55 years.

When people have specific training questions we recommend that they go to our website and post those questions in the ASK CINDY on the front page of leerburg.com. Cindy has been training dogs since she was a teenager and has competed in several dog sports at a regional and national level. She was also a vet tech and owned a boarding/training and grooming business for many years as well as breeding working Dobermans and Belgian Malinois under the kennel name Kaiserhaus.
Questions posted to ASK CINDY are answered almost every day. They are also recorded in our systems if a dog owner has additional questions Cindy will review the previous Q&As and this helps her give better feedback and assistance.
