Training Your Dog The Collar Grab

Uploaded on May 21, 2025 • 9 min

In this video, Ed Frawley shares why and how we teach the collar grab skill to your dog. The Collar Grab is a foundational skill taught in basic and intermediate dog obedience to teach the dog how to be comfortable with being grabbed and led by the collar.

This video clip came from our Intermediate Dog Obedience course. This course covers a wide range of skill sets that complement the training covered in our  Basic Dog Obedience course. These are everyday skills that make living with and handling our dogs easier. They are all trained in our reward-based training system. We show how to split these exercises into small training parts, how to train those parts, and then put them back together for the final skill. Behaviors taught in this course include “Look”, Advanced Luring, the Hand Touch, the Collar Grab, Place command, Touch Pads, Raised Platforms/dog bed, the Stand, loose leash skills, contact heeling, and introduction to recall drills.  Continue your education with more skill-specific Leerburg courses once you have mastered these foundational intermediate skills.

When people have specific training questions we recommend that they go to our website and post those questions in the ASK CINDY on the front page of leerburg.com. Cindy has been training dogs since she was a teenager and has competed in several dog sports at a regional and national level. She was also a vet tech and owned a boarding/training and grooming business for many years as well as breeding working Dobermans and Belgian Malinois under the kennel name Kaiserhaus.

Questions posted to ASK CINDY are answered almost every day. They are also recorded in our systems if a dog owner has additional questions Cindy will review the previous Q&As and this helps her give better feedback and assistance.
