My young bitch will not release the grip, what should I do? I don’t want to kill her drive to herd.
Dear Ed,
I wrote to you before sometime ago about herding GSDs. I have a very young bitch who is quite promising in herding with strong schutzhund lines and herding lines in her pedigree. She is working a two sided border rather independently on a long line, but from time to time she is still breaking in on the sheep. In herding, it is acceptable for a grip on the sheep when appropriate, the problem we have is, Janna our girl has a great grip and in the proper places on the sheep. She is a...

I want to give my dog supplements to keep him healthy. Would you recommend? Something with calcium for his bones or what kind of vitamin would you suggest?
I visited your web site today to find out what kind of vitamins to supplement my puppy with. To be quite honest, I did not have much time to go item by item, but I really want to buy something. Would you recommend something with calcium for his bones or what kind of vitamin would you suggest? I'm currently feeding Royal canine which is a good brand, but still want to give him some supplements...
In advance thanks for your time.

My vet said eating raw chicken is unsafe for humans and why would you risk your dogs health by feeding them raw chicken?
Hello,
I took my dog in for a check up and talked to my veterinarian about the raw food diet you push and she said; bad idea. She said dogs will contract Campylobacter and salmonella from raw chicken just like humans. She said eating raw chicken is unsafe for humans and why would you risk your dogs health by feeding them raw chicken?
I've been making my own dog food; cooked with a protein source such as elk; oryx; deer; chicken; pork or beef mixed with brown rice; cooked vegetable; egg...

Thanks,

I have bred my female twice with 2 different males, both resulting in some testicle problems in the males. I am reluctant to ever breed her again. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Hello,
I have enjoyed your e-mails in the past with questions about whelping and you were very quick to respond, straight up and very very helpful and thank you for that.
My new question is this, I have breed my female Sandy vom Salztalblick twice with 2 different males, the first was Kim von der Ehrfelder-H?lzung and the second breeding was with OCJ of Shepherdglen.
9 pups in the first litter "6 males & 3 females" and 6 pups in the second litter "2 males & 4 females." I keep in co...

If I want my dog to see me as the pack leader, can I teach him to pull me skijoring? Some trainers say you always need to be in front of your dog in order to be the leader.
I have an alaskan husky who is 17 months old. He is a sled dog from racing lines- leaders bred to leaders. I am training him to skijor, and one of the most important things a skijor dog must do is be willing to lead, pull steadily, avoid distractions. I know many trainers say you should always walk in front of your dog to show you are the pack leader.
What's your take on this, when I've been training my dog to pull in front, but still respond to my commands from puppyhood? Do you a...

I have two pitbulls that are aggressive towards other dogs and will do anything to kill a cat. I am having trouble controlling them off-leash. Suggestions?
I have two pit bulls, 1 male, 1 female, both three years old. They are great dogs and my life. Single military guy, not much else to do. They dogs are great in the home and have never been aggressive towards me in any way. But are aggressive towards other dogs and will do anything to get to a cat and kill it. Major prey aggression. The dogs and I have established the master of the pack situation, but I am having trouble controlling them off the leash. I am trying to retrain them (previous mil...

Can you direct me to an article that would tell me how to teach then how to walk on a leash? Should we not let our dogs play with toys together? How much 'play/fighting' should we allow?
Dear Cindy,
I want to thank you first of all for answering my questions a few weeks ago. I received the puppy training video and Establishing pack structure one and am nearly through the puppy one but not very far on the other one. We have a 4 month old puppy and a 4 year old mutt who looks and acts like a Jack Russell. Your information has been so helpful. I have several questions concerning how these two dogs may/should interact. 1. Can you direct me to an article that would tell...

I have a 15 month old Bernese Mountain Dog who is very dog reactive, not aggressive just VERY enthusiastic to meet other dogs, any dogs. She has been well socialized starting at 11 weeks old and this problem persists.
We have gone to classes also and she still acts like she's never met a dog in her life! The main problem is when she...

We rescued a stray who turned out to be pregnant and now that she has had her puppies is very aggressive around them. What should I do?
Good Morning,
I am hoping that you can help me with what I believe is an unusual situation. Almost two months ago, we found a Shiba Inu running stray in our community... she was in beautiful shape but very skittish, scared, impossible to catch. We called every agency, checked every website, nobody was looking for her. My teenage children and I set out to gain her trust - it took over a month, but we were able to catch her in a crate - we had anticipated a bad reaction, but she ha...

The dog I've adoped from the shelter has killed 8 of my neighbor's rabbits, destroyed thousands of dollars in landscaping, and is now attacking me. What should I do?
Hello.
While searching the internet for "2 weeks after Neuter. my black lab is attacking me," I found your website and information on why dogs attack.
I called one of your staff members today and told her my plight, she didn't know the answer so she guided me to your email address.
Of all the websites I've searched, and all the phone calls I've made, some how, I've been lured to your site.
Anyway, here is my story:
2 weeks ago, I went to the local humane Soc...

You seem to discourage people with breeds other than GSD’s from the sport Schutzhund?
Mr. Frawley:
I've noticed you've advised many people with breeds uncommon to the Sport of Schutzhund to "find a different sport." I am not a "little dog person," I like dogs that have purpose - plain and simple. But I've also opened my eyes up to see that the canine species is very diverse. It is rare, but I've seen breeds like the Maltese succeeding in Herding, Bulldogs driving flocks of ducks at the shows - and the same is happening to the sport of Schutzhund. I've seen Standard ...

I have a 9 month GSD that I've now started to work some basic jumps (heights of 2-3 feet). Is it too soon to work jumps?
I have a question about training my dog with Jumps. I am looking to get my dog in a Schutzhund Club. At the moment the club that I am trying to get into is not taking anymore dogs at this time, so at the moment I've been working with my dog on how to build drive, retrieving, obedience and some basic bite work.

My 10 month old dog is trained to track. Now it is time to train it in Air Scenting. I am having problems with control off leash. What should I do?
Mr Frawley,
I have a 10 month old Bouvier that I am training for SAR. He is currently tracking but I am starting him on the basics of air scent off lead. My problem is that the older he gets the more the prey drive seems to have kicked in. Once he took off after snowmobiles while off lead and now he is starting to show interest in cars (crouching and attempting to lunge while on lead) I have started putting a prong collar on him and walking him by the road and treating him if he doesn'...

Can you ever trust a weak nerved dog?
Ed,
Our rescue dog has weak nerves - is easily frightened but less than we we got him 3 mo. ago. He is 10 mo. old. We are now doing GW per your article and he is living, eating in his crate that is in the dining/living room. I bought your Obedience video and prong collar and am doing all I can to train him right. Doing well with marker training, learning to sit going in and out of doors, etc. I have switched to natural meat and bone diet per your article, give Vit. E , Vit. C and F...

My 6 month old female GSD has been showing signs of being weak nerved lately. What do you think?
Hi Ed,
I'm a long time follower of your site and I think it's good that you offer blunt/matter of fact advise.
I have a 6 mos old female GSD from German working lines and so far she's been a wonderful dog. I do have a couple of concerns though;
I came home the other night and had forgotten my keys in the house. I have a 3 year old son and a 7 mos old daughter and I knew they would both be asleep so I tapped gently on the door trying to get my wife's attention and not ...

Have you ever seen a dog that is afraid of traffic grow up to become a brave, confident companion? How have you dealt with similar problems?
Hello,
Several weeks ago I was lucky enough to have come upon your website. I found it so fascinating that I have spent hours reading dozens and dozens of its articles. Your insight into the thinking dogs is in many ways unique and I have come to the conclusion, accurate although it differs from so many traditional views. I have already purchased several DVDs and books ("Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 Months," "Basic Obedience," "Raw Dog Food," etc.) and consider them tremendously helpful...
