I have a 3 year old male GSD who is overly friendly with strangers. At this point, is it realistic for me to change this behavior and, if so, how?
I have a 3 year old male GSD. Great, obedient, family pet. Most of the training I put him through was prior to coming across your fantastic web site and knowledge base. With that said, I'm happy and he seems happy with how everything has turned out. He is, however, overly friendly with strangers. I have read some of your training on different subjects and was wondering if you can guide me to one of your DVDs or articles on how to keep him from being so overly friendly with strangers. My dog comes in fast but always sits crooked. Any suggestions?
Hi There,
I always read your articles, but for some reason can't find one on this. I have a problem with my dog doing his Heir. He comes in fast BUT always sits crooked. I have tried to use food and toys. And I have tried corrections but can't seem to get him to understand. Do you have any suggestions?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I live in the country and there are many drop-offs. Many counties in this state don't have shelters. What are your thoughts on doing what's right?
Hi Ed,
I have great respect for your knowledge on dogs and am learning much from your articles and DVDs.
Since I moved to TN to care for my elderly mother 3 years ago, I have acquired over 40 drop-off dogs and various other animals. We live in the country and needless to say there are many drop-offs (abandoned, abused and/or starved) in this economically depressed area. Many of the counties here have no shelters, including this one. And the lack of education, exposure and wi...

I have in the last 2 weeks taken in a rescue Aussie. I'm not sure what else I can do to get her to trust me and be a normal dog. Suggestions?
Hi Cindy,
I have in the last 2 weeks taken in a rescue Aussie, I have my own Aussies. She was purchased at auction by Aussie rescue and was a puppy mill mom for an unknown amount of time. She is totally un social, doesn't care for or want attention. If given her own choice she would lay in a crate or dog house forever and not move. But I don't want that for her I want to at least make her secure or trust a little. Everyday it's like the first day she has seen me she cowers, ducks t...

I just got a GSD pup and would like to train him in Schutzhund. Where do you think I should start?
Mr.Frawley,
Hi my name is Jack and I have been looking through your site and it is full of excellent information but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I just brought a German Shepherd pup, he is now 10 weeks old. He was 8 1/2 weeks old when I purchased him and brought him home. He comes from a very good working line.
I want to train him in Schutzhund, like his parents. I have looked through your site and read some of your articles on training but I don't know where to start...

I’m doing Schutzhund training with my dogs and I wonder how often can I train my dogs without burning them out?
Hello Ed,
My name is Louis and I have a question for you. I've bought training DVDs from your company and let me tell you a lot of information that I've got from said DVDs have helped me. I'm located in El Paso, Texas which is the black hole of dog sports. Anyway my question to you on training is; How many times should and/or can a dog be trained without burning them out? I have German shepherds and I'm training in the sport of schutzhund.
Thanks,
Louis

My dog will only bite with the front of its mouth. Are there other ways to make a dog bite with a fuller grip?
Hi Mr. Frawley,
I know I have sent this to you already and I understand that you are probably very busy. I apologize for being so persistent and this probably sounds like such a stupid question, however I would appreciate any advice or reference to articles on your web page that could shed some light regarding this issue. As I previously mentioned it's regarding a two and a half year old GSD bitch training towards IPO 1. We are having problems with her bite. She keeps biting on her front t...

I’ve let a playful lab turn into an aggressive nightmare. He is cross certified in wilderness and human remain detection. How can I make sure he won't be aggressive out in the field?
Good morning,
For someone who should know better, I've let a large playful, lab turn into a dominant, dog aggressive nightmare. I've been training search and rescue dogs for 15 years and he is my first dominant aggressive dog. He snarls, lunges when a new dog shows up at the house or out in public. As I never personally dealt with a dominant dog in the past, I didn't see all the subtle warning signs as this dog developed. He is 110# 2 ? old lab and last summer he started growling a...

Can a dog be trained in S&R and Personal Protection?
I have a 6 month old German Shepherd. I've got your puppy tape 8 weeks to 8 months. It's great. I have a couple questions. Can I train him to be a personal protection dog and a search and rescue dog? If so, or, if not, what is the next video I should get?

Is tracking thru drive stressful on the dog?
I have just bought and looked at your Level I and II & III RCMP tracking videos, and found them very well made and interesting. A few questions, if you have the time and possibility to answer them:
1. You work with very high motivation, and the dogs are selected for very high drives. Are there generally any stress-related problems on the track due to this? Like dogs not being able to concentrate enough at track losses, difficult conditions, etc.? Do you think stress management i...

I am about to receive my new patrol dog, (an import), can you offer advise on how to bond with this dog?
Dear Ed,
This week I will receive my police service dog. He is a 2 year old import, he is not a fire pisser nor is he a doormat. A nice balance defines the personality of this dog. My question is, how do I best aqua in him to his new home. Which includes a 11 month old puppy and a house cat. I want the dog to have as little situational stress as possible so that we can get on the path to bonding as a team. Any insights or ideas would be helpful.

Our dogs are locked in prey. When we hit them with the stick they will not stop focusing on the sleeve that is laying on the ground. What should we do?
I did a training session yesterday, I walked my service dog along and came upon the query who stepped out unexpected. My service dog was barking, then the query who was wearing an exposed sleeve walked towards the dog using a whip as in your video tapes. When the dog launched initially, he bite on the sleeve and was given the sleeve. I kept the dog on a 6 foot leash, he "carried the sleeve" as in your tapes, I "outed" him, we stepped back out of reach of the sleeve, then the query stepped...

I am being considered for a police K9 handler position. I am concerned about the safety of my two small children. Do you have any advice?
Our department is forming a K9 unit and I am being seriously considered as the first handler. I am interested in your opinion on my "situation."
My main concern regarding the safety of my family unit as we have two very small children and two adult dogs. I understand each dog is unique but without any further information do you think I would be a suitable departmental K9 handler or am I setting myself up for disaster?
Thanks in advance,
Kathy

What do you expect from a good (working) puppy to show you before you treat him as a mature dog and not as a puppy?
Hello Ed,
I work in the Israeli swat in puppy program for special forces.
We have few malinois puppies in different ages, and we have some disagreement between us about the best age to put real pressure from a decoy on the puppy/dog.
I'll be glad if you can answer from your experience with puppies and young dogs, what are you expect from a good (working) puppy to show you before you treat him as a mature dog and not as a puppy.
What are the cues we need to see ...

We have a 12 year old cocker and just got a puppy. The pup is terrorizing the older dog. What should we do?
We recently purchased a 5 month old, German Shepherd of German and Dutch breeding. She is a pleasant puppy and quite active. We already had a 12 year old Cocker Spaniel who also has a very pleasant and now placid personality. We have had the shepherd for 3 weeks. During this time we have allowed the dogs to sniff each other through a gate, but have not allowed them to be free together. Our few attempts to introduce the dogs without the gate; have resulted in the following: the shepherd ea...

We are trying to raise 2 littermates at one time. I have some questions.
Your puppy video arrived in the mail this weekend and we watched it, twice. Good job! The video covered a lot of ground, but I still have more questions.
I read your article on why you shouldn't have two dogs at once. Unfortunately, we already have the two pups, and we want to make the best of it. Based on what you've written, I assume we could have some problems with them not accepting us in their "pack" of two. What are some warning signs to watch out for in case they decide we d...
