How do we cause our K9 to alert with more intense excitement on drugs?
My question is how do we cause our k9 to alert with more intense excitement on drugs, he alerts but with a ho-hum attitude. I would like to see him fired up! During his find. I don't mind if he scratches a vehicle, It is ours by then anyway. Sonny, our K9 is very sharp but I would like to see him with more drive on alert. Thank you in advance.

Is there some type of law that protects K-9 officers/handlers from liability if the dog does some type of damage to a vehicle during a search?
Hello,
I wrote to you a while ago asking permission to use some of your web site info for a term paper for school ( which by the way I got a B on. So, thank you). My reason for writing you today is, I work for the Oneida Police Department in Wisconsin and our K-9 officer is trying to research if there is any K-9 case law with regards to: Property damage that sometimes occurs when a dog "alerts" on a vehicle ..for example..the dog scratches on the exterior of a vehicle and causes sc...

We are noticing some worrisome behavior with our 4-yr-old Great Dane. How do we correct this and what might we have done wrong to bring on this behavior?
Dear Ed,
We got a 4 year old Great Dane/Boxer cross a year ago from a lady who rescued him from the SPCA. She and her 7 year old son had him for about two weeks. She claims the Dane attacked her dog, but we feel it wasn't an attack but probably just some barking, etc. As a result, she felt she had to give up the Dane.
We took the Dane from her last year. The first two weeks we had him, he was around two small children in our home, without incident. Since then we have noticed...

I plan on training my dog in protection work. I am wondering what are the differences in how e-collar is used for pet owners as opposed to training protection work.
Cindy,
I recently purchased the E-Collar for Pet Owners video. My plan had been to use an e-collar at about the one-year mark, after achieving a firm foundation in basic obedience. However, when reading the Discussion Forums a user alluded to a difference in the way an e-collar is used for a pet and protection work. I plan on training my dog in protection work and would like to understand what (if any) are the differences in the way an e-collar is used for pet owners as opposed to ...

I have a 7 month old female GSD which I am trying to train by your excellent videos. I'm having jumping, biting and handler problems. Do you have any suggestions?
Dear Cindy
I have a 7 month old female GSD which I am trying to train by your excellent videos. Most of the problems I am having with her (biting, jumping) are handler problems. I can still hold her, but soon she will be stronger than I am!
I have free range chickens, and since this dog was first acquired at 6 wks, she has been fascinated with the chickens... not to watch, but to CHASE! I keep a 20 ft leash on her, but at times she gets away from me. Recently she chased a ch...

My GSD pup is 16 weeks old. I was thinking of purchasing your "Dogtra 280NCP" collar and your E-collar DVD. Would this be the right collar for a puppy?
Hi Cindy,
Your advice worked out very well. My GSD pup is now 16 weeks old and I have come back to you to ask for your gracious help with another problem.
The pup is very "mouthy" on me and on inappropriate objects, i.e. he trys to eat sticks, rocks, grass, and even dirt! I judge him to be of extremely high prey drive.
I have been studying your DVDs ("Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 Months," "Basic Obedience," "Establishing Pack Structure For the Family DOG") and learned that you often move...

Do you feel a properly applied e-collar program would be the best plan on curbing some of our Brittany’s behavior? Does this sound like a dog vs. wife dominance issue?
We have a 6 month old spayed female Brittany that we selected (at 10 weeks) from a litter of proven hunters. Bea is a house dog first and will get ample opportunity to bird hunt. Bea has done well in our basic training but is very stubborn at times, occasionally sitting and looking at you when you say 'come' (most of the time she runs to you at full speed) and an insistent desire to nibble or gnaw our hands despite our 'NO BITE' response. Our biggest concern is her apparent fight for domi...

Can my small-dog aggressive dog be trained not to bother small dogs?
Hi Cindy,
I just re-watched (for the third time) Ed's video on electric dog collar training, and I have a question: Can my "small-dog aggressive" dog be trained not to bother small dogs? He's a two year old Lab, and recently started "attacking" small dogs on leads (which doesn't sit well with their owners--to say the least). Up to this point he's been responsive to my commands and friendly towards other dogs, but "loses it" when he sees a small dog. We live in an area where most o...

My Chow mix has tried to bite several children. Today he almost got a small child on our walk. What should I do?
Dear Mr. Frawley,
I adopted my dog about 2 years ago from a no kill shelter when he was about 8 months old. They told me he was found laying in the street with a bad wound leg from a knife or fence. He is a chow, yellow lab and Shepard or rottie mix. He is neutered.
I took him to obedience training from the very beginning but he would get aggressive towards the other dogs in class and the teacher suggested I put him to sleep or go to private classes. I have gone to private c...

My 3 year old neutered Rott has attacked 2 children and my puppy. He is the love of my life-- what can I do?
Hi Ed,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience and advice on and through this web site. I am hoping you can help me and perhaps lead me in the right direction. I am interested in several of your videos and was wondering which you would recommend for my circumstances.
I have an 8 year old neutered Basset Hound, a 3 year old neutered Rottweiler mix whom we rescued, and a 14 week old Newfoundland girl. My problems are with the rottie mix and I would really appreciate any adv...

I have been told that German Shepherds are somewhat special in that they will accept a bashing and still try and try to please their owner. Do you agree with this?
Dear Mr. Frawley,
My parents have a four year old Labrador bitch that is aggressive towards other dogs, including my own 18-month old lab bitch. The reason I have concluded is fear or insecurity of other dogs, although I do not know where it stems from. I am told by many that I should not punish her for her aggressive behavior since it is based on fear. The rationale behind this I suppose would be that it is an uncontrollable behavior not a chosen one hence the correction will only...

I am not sure how to proceed with Bailey and her potty training, as she constantly has to pee. We've been to the vet. What would you recommend?
I am not sure how to proceed with Bailey and her potty training. I got Bailey at 7 weeks. She is an 11 week old female Doberman. She came from a good breeder and a clean environment. She has a great personality, learns quickly and is an all around happy, playful puppy.
She is crate trained. She is exercised, walked, trained and I play with her every day.
At first I thought the constant peeing was her age. After about a week and a half of the relentless peeing I began to real...

I have 2 of your videos and I have a 7 month old chi/pom. He just recently started to cock his leg up to pee on furniture legs. What do I need to do to fix this?
Hi,
I am writing because I need some input about a potty training problem. I have 2 of your videos and I have a 7 month old chi/pom. He has been doing good potty training in his crate. I started that when I got him at 9 weeks. He just recently started to cock his leg up to pee and now for some reason when he is in the house he will some times just stop and do that on the couch or on any of the legs of the furniture and pee. We don't always catch him but we have a few times and ...

We have a 10 week old puppy that is just about housebroken due to constant watching him. Is it possible to train him to come to us and let us know he needs to go outside?
Cindy,
We have a 10 week old Labradoodle puppy that is just about housebroken due to constant watching him.
He seems very intelligent (he actual like?s watching your training DVDs) but trying to watch him for signs of wanting to go outside does not promote a relaxed atmosphere. Is it possible to train him to come to us and let us know he needs to go outside?
Thanks.

We use expens for different areas, including inside, outside and in the garage. Recently my puppy has begun going potty in the inside expen. What should I do?
Hi Cindy,
I made a mistake with the potty training with my new pup. I had 3 ex pens for her, one outside for a potty area, one in the garage for middle of the night trips (necessary because I don't go out in the middle of the night due to wildlife and bear that visit our deck) and one in the kitchen area for containment.
I either have my 9 week old tethered to me, in her crate or in the pen. I follow all the housebreaking rules as best I can.
Here is the problem. Due to wetness...

My dog is a fear biter. I need to know if I should use an electric collar to train him to come when called.
I know you are extremely busy, but you are the acknowledged dog expert from so many different circles, and I am running out of ideas on what to do with my dog, so forgive me for taking your time... I adopted a rott/shep mix when he was 6 mo old, and have had him for a year and a half. As you have probably already guessed, he is a fear biter. We have been to several different trainers, and he is somewhat more comfortable around children after our follow up trips to the park, but he is stil...

I’m using your formula for a litter of boxer pups and after I’m done feeding them formula comes out through their noses. Am I overfeeding them?
I emailed you regarding your formula a couple of times.... I have fed my pups it now for about 2 weeks, they are 3 weeks old tomorrow. I have one concern though. I have had them checked for cleft palates, and they don't have any. But when I feed them the formula, all but one pup (out of 4) burps it up thru their nose a few minutes after they have eaten, been burped and put back in the puppy box for a nap. Sometimes it comes out pretty good. This is really concerning me... and my dumb vet ...
