Can my small-dog aggressive dog be trained not to bother small dogs?
Hi Cindy,
I just re-watched (for the third time) Ed's video on electric dog collar training, and I have a question: Can my "small-dog aggressive" dog be trained not to bother small dogs? He's a two year old Lab, and recently started "attacking" small dogs on leads (which doesn't sit well with their owners--to say the least). Up to this point he's been responsive to my commands and friendly towards other dogs, but "loses it" when he sees a small dog. We live in an area where most o...

My Chow mix has tried to bite several children. Today he almost got a small child on our walk. What should I do?
Dear Mr. Frawley,
I adopted my dog about 2 years ago from a no kill shelter when he was about 8 months old. They told me he was found laying in the street with a bad wound leg from a knife or fence. He is a chow, yellow lab and Shepard or rottie mix. He is neutered.
I took him to obedience training from the very beginning but he would get aggressive towards the other dogs in class and the teacher suggested I put him to sleep or go to private classes. I have gone to private c...

My 3 year old neutered Rott has attacked 2 children and my puppy. He is the love of my life-- what can I do?
Hi Ed,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience and advice on and through this web site. I am hoping you can help me and perhaps lead me in the right direction. I am interested in several of your videos and was wondering which you would recommend for my circumstances.
I have an 8 year old neutered Basset Hound, a 3 year old neutered Rottweiler mix whom we rescued, and a 14 week old Newfoundland girl. My problems are with the rottie mix and I would really appreciate any adv...

I have been told that German Shepherds are somewhat special in that they will accept a bashing and still try and try to please their owner. Do you agree with this?
Dear Mr. Frawley,
My parents have a four year old Labrador bitch that is aggressive towards other dogs, including my own 18-month old lab bitch. The reason I have concluded is fear or insecurity of other dogs, although I do not know where it stems from. I am told by many that I should not punish her for her aggressive behavior since it is based on fear. The rationale behind this I suppose would be that it is an uncontrollable behavior not a chosen one hence the correction will only...

I am not sure how to proceed with Bailey and her potty training, as she constantly has to pee. We've been to the vet. What would you recommend?
I am not sure how to proceed with Bailey and her potty training. I got Bailey at 7 weeks. She is an 11 week old female Doberman. She came from a good breeder and a clean environment. She has a great personality, learns quickly and is an all around happy, playful puppy.
She is crate trained. She is exercised, walked, trained and I play with her every day.
At first I thought the constant peeing was her age. After about a week and a half of the relentless peeing I began to real...

I have 2 of your videos and I have a 7 month old chi/pom. He just recently started to cock his leg up to pee on furniture legs. What do I need to do to fix this?
Hi,
I am writing because I need some input about a potty training problem. I have 2 of your videos and I have a 7 month old chi/pom. He has been doing good potty training in his crate. I started that when I got him at 9 weeks. He just recently started to cock his leg up to pee and now for some reason when he is in the house he will some times just stop and do that on the couch or on any of the legs of the furniture and pee. We don't always catch him but we have a few times and ...

We have a 10 week old puppy that is just about housebroken due to constant watching him. Is it possible to train him to come to us and let us know he needs to go outside?
Cindy,
We have a 10 week old Labradoodle puppy that is just about housebroken due to constant watching him.
He seems very intelligent (he actual like?s watching your training DVDs) but trying to watch him for signs of wanting to go outside does not promote a relaxed atmosphere. Is it possible to train him to come to us and let us know he needs to go outside?
Thanks.
John

My dog is a fear biter. I need to know if I should use an electric collar to train him to come when called.
I know you are extremely busy, but you are the acknowledged dog expert from so many different circles, and I am running out of ideas on what to do with my dog, so forgive me for taking your time... I adopted a rott/shep mix when he was 6 mo old, and have had him for a year and a half. As you have probably already guessed, he is a fear biter. We have been to several different trainers, and he is somewhat more comfortable around children after our follow up trips to the park, but he is stil...

I’m using your formula for a litter of boxer pups and after I’m done feeding them formula comes out through their noses. Am I overfeeding them?
I emailed you regarding your formula a couple of times.... I have fed my pups it now for about 2 weeks, they are 3 weeks old tomorrow. I have one concern though. I have had them checked for cleft palates, and they don't have any. But when I feed them the formula, all but one pup (out of 4) burps it up thru their nose a few minutes after they have eaten, been burped and put back in the puppy box for a nap. Sometimes it comes out pretty good. This is really concerning me... and my dumb vet ...

At state parks we have to keep our dog tied up at all times. Is there a tie that I can wrap around a tree that is safe? Is there another option I am not considering?
Hi there,
First off wanted to let you know that your DVDs have literally done worlds of change for our dog, and now that we have such an engaged and happy dog we recently took her hiking with us in the state parks in texas, which was phenomenal. The one problem there is that you must keep your dog on a lead at all times, no exceptions, even though I would feel confident that our dog would not leave a platz, sit or place until released I still must follow the rules or get a ticket. Is there...

Do you have any training ideas for a dog that breaks out of the crate or could you recommend one of the metal ones you sell.
My son and daughter-in-law are both active Air Force stationed in Ramstein GR. They have a 8 month old Malamute who is a crate escape artist. They have crate trained him since the day they brought him home since my son's older Mal (who died last fall at the age of 12 ) was also an escape artist, they knew they had to teach him from the start. He was fine for the first 7 months (even flew 12 hrs on the plane in his crate) but now good old Champ has decide he doesn't have to stay in a cra...

I let my 2-yr-old dog loose overnight but she destroyed some pillows after 3 hours. I told her NO and put her in the crate. Did I do the right thing?
Hi Cindy,
Thank you for all the great training advice you have given me in the past. I have another issue regarding my 2 year old female GSD. I raised her since she was 8 weeks old and followed Leerburg's protocol on making sure she is crated when not attended to. Thanks to this great and simple advice, she has never destroyed anything in the house.
Now at 2 years old I would like to start leaving her out of the crate overnight and possibly while I am at work. What I have done up to thi...

At what age, if at all, do you recommend getting a female spayed that will be doing personal protection work?
Hello Cindy,
I am getting ready to take possession of my new working female GSD (8 weeks old) today. I want to use this dog for serious personal protection work and was wondering what your opinion was on spaying her. I know with males it is said that it is better to wait if you are going to neuter them but what about females? I don't want to do anything that will hurt her drive.

My 14-month-old Boxer, which has been through obedience classes, has started to lunge and grab and bark at my hands to get my attention. What video should I buy to stop this?
I just want to say, like everyone else who logs in on your web site, how informative your site is. Just received your catalog the other day and I'm interested in purchasing a training video but don't exactly know which one I should order.
I have a 14 month old male neutered boxer that has gone through basic obedience classes with a passing grade. He has no problem with the "sit," "down," "stay," "leave it" commands but needs a little work on his "come" command.

My 9 month old GSD has been through puppy obedience classes. But when he comes into the house he jumps all over the furniture, chews on the kids, and will not listen. What should I do?
Hi, I have been reading your articles on training for about five months. I purchased a german shepherd puppy at the age of seven weeks old, he is now seven months old and just does not listen. He loves to be outside, but when he comes in the house he jumps on furniture, bites the kids, and basically just doesn't listen. I have taken him to puppy school and we are on level one obedience right now. I just don't know what to do with him. I don't want to leave him outside all the time I want ...

My dog constantly jumps up on the counter. How can I stop this behavior?
Dear Mr. Frawley,
I have purchased and watched both of your tapes (Puppies and Obedience Training) several times. I am having great success with training our 6 mo. old Lab (Jake) all because of your help. I am a great fan of yours.
I have one issue with which I really need help. Jake jumps up on the counter and looks for food. Though we are careful not to have anything within his reach, this is very annoying, especially since I am having so much success with training him in every other ...

My dog attacks the garage door. How does one alter this behavior?
I have an 8mo GSD - really a calm, well behaved dog, except for one bizarre problem. Every time I reach for the garage door opener in my home (or open the garage door otherwise) he runs as fast as he can to the door and attacks it. It is a detached garage.
When this behavior first began, he would run to the door, and go into the garage without harming the door. And then he would attack the lawn mower - it is electric - and it had never run in his presence.
I managed to demon...

My dog has automobile anxiety and is nearly unmanageable when on board. What would you suggest?
I searched your site and couldn't find anything close to my situation.
My 4 year old Irish Setter has automobile anxiety. She pants, whines, whimpers, drools and is generally anxious and overly excited in the car. She loves to go on car rides and gets very excited when she knows we are driving and even leaps in the car at the first chance. The problem is that she is nearly unmanageable when on board. I have tried letting her roam, as well as hooking her up on a short lead to the c...

Is there anything you can do to prevent bloating?
Hello,
I read some of the posts on your site about bloat and torsion. We had a black lab not a GS, however what I am reading sounds like our guy had torsion. What pains me is that we may have had some "signs" early on in his life that, had we known maybe he would still be here.
He was a big lab, when healthy about 85 lbs, but always slender. You could always see at least one rib on Rouge, sometimes two but feed him like crazy. What seemed "fat" to us on Rouge was probably normal girth o...

My GSD cries all the time when I put him in the crate. What can I do?
I just picked up my GSD pup 8 days ago. He is a magnificent dog, very intelligent. After just two day he was asking for the door to relieve himself and was asking when he was hungry. A friend of ours let us use your video, 'Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months'. It is great. But none the less we have a big problem with the pup. He does not tolerate the crate. He keeps crying and barking all the time. I mean all the time; he does not get tired of it? We follow your training to the "T." It does n...
