My dog is doing great at holding her bladder if she has to pee, but can't seem to wait if she has to poop. Any suggestions or advice?

Full Question:
I currently have a 1 year old Dachshund mix that I just adopted about 2 weeks ago. She knows to go outside and pee and when she pees or poops I praise her and say good job and she gets a treat when she comes in. The problem I am having is, it seems like she will hold her pee until the next time to go out if she has to pee but if she has to poop she just goes. The vet checked her out and said she is healthy and everything seems fine. I can?t make her understand that potty is for outside only. She will go to the door and want to go out and when I let her out I never know if she really has to go or just wants to go outside and run in the yard.

Any suggestions or advice?

Thank you,
Samantha

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
You need to go out with her so you know when she’s going to the bathroom outside and can positively reinforce it.

Keep her on leash or confined at all times in the house, treat her like a new pup. Control her movements and the environment so you can show her what you expect.

We have a section on the website about house training.

I’d also recommend the video Pack Structure for the Family Pet. This is the program we use for ALL new dogs to our home.
