Q. I'm being considered as a new patrol K9 handler with my agency and I'm worried about how it will affect my family and current dog. What are your thoughts?
I'm being considered as a new patrol K9 handler with my agency. I've never worked K9 but I do have a 7 year old retired K9 at home as a family pet. When I got him he was very anti-social and wouldn't let anybody get close to me. Now through extensive training he's adapted very well as a family dog and is great with my wife.

One major issue with him is that he displays his type- A personality towards other dogs in an aggressive manner. My fear is that if I am to start working a new K9 dog, 1.) my current family dog will begin to resent me and 2.) I won't be able to trust both dogs together in the backyard while braking them. Any suggestions or thoughts would be of great help.

Thanks,
Jim

A. You have good reason to be concerned. The odds of you being able to allow two service dogs of the same sex to run together is about 1%. In other words – its not going to happen. It comes under the category of “Just Because We Want It Doesn't Mean It Can Happen”

So you are going to have to have two dog kennels and accept the fact that these dog's can NEVER be together. It also means your wife and family are 110% on board with this. Here is what happens when people make mistakes when they try and break up a dog fight and they do it wrong.

I wrote an article on my web site titled HOW TO BREAK UP A DOG FIGHT WITHOUT GETTING HURT. Both you and your wife need to know how to do it (and frankly women often don’t have the body strength to do it correctly).

Bark and Hold Training for Police Service Dogs

2 Hours
This tape is directed towards the real world where police departments or professional dog trainers contracted by police departments do not have years to finish the training on a dog before it goes out on the street. It is not uncommon to take a selection tested dog and finish him in 6 to 12 weeks (depending on the dog, the department and what is expected before the dog is allowed to work). For this reason the bark & hold training needs to be done quickly. The training methods in this video have that in mind.

In my DVD, I provide 3 1/2 hours of information to help people solve their problems with dominant dogs and aggressive dogs. This information is based on 45 years of experience training dogs. For the last 30 years I have studied the art of protection training dogs. I was a police K9 handler for 10 years, and was chairman of the training committee for the WI police dog association for a number of those years. I have bred German Shepherds for police service work for 28 years. During this time I have bred over 350 litters of working dogs. I have dogs from my kennel working in law enforcement, Search and Rescue and competing in Schutzhund all over this country. No one I know in the United States can make these claims.

How to Raise a Working Puppy
How to Raise a Working Puppy

1 Hour, 15 Minutes
This is a handler training video, not a dog training video. It's a video that explains how we raise and socialize our puppies. If you are looking for a video on how to train a working puppy - this is not the video for you. There is a difference between how we raise a working puppy vs. how pet owners raise their dogs. Working puppies are expected to look at their world through different eyes than a family pet. This DVD on puppy training shows owners how to raise a working puppy.

The directed search is one of the more important exercises that police K9 handlers must teach their dog. It is used in building searches and areas searches. If a service dog is to work safely off leash it must know the directed search. In todays society K9 handlers must have complete control over their dogs at all times. The training program for the directed search is an excellent way to accomplish this goal.
