My pup of 16 weeks is starting to show "stranger anxiety." Should I do something now while she is still young?

Hi Cindy, First off, thanks for all the great information on your web site and videos. I bought both Basic Obedience and Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 Months and found them very helpful. Looking for some advice about by Doberman puppy. She's 16 weeks old and starting to show "stranger anxiety." If she is in our fenced-in yard off leash, and someone walks by the house, or she spots one of our neighbors, her hair stands up and she barks like mad. Even though she is a puppy, she ...

Our 11-month GS female pees from excitement when a new person greets her. Are there any helpful hints for this situation?

Hi, I am a huge fan! Thank you for your advice and products. We have an 11 month old GS female and she is spectacular. Several of your DVDs have been amazingly helpful to us. Our GS is brilliant, sweet, trained, and a pleasure. Since she was a puppy, she pees from excitement when a new person greets her. She also does this when I come home from a business trip and she hasn't seen me in a few days. Several have told me that this is submissive urination and will hopefully go a...

Our Chow-mix has bitten three people. We are going to put the dog to sleep but a trainer said there was medication that could help. What do you think?

I have a 5 year old chow/sharpei-mix male dog. My wife and I enrolled him in a obedience school when he was 2 years because he bit someone in the hand. Since then he has bitten three people in the arm or the hand. These people have always been over at the house. He is now serving his third quarantine. We have decided to put him down, even though it is very hard. The trainer told us that maybe we can medicate the dog to eliminate the aggression. Have you heard of this med. and what do you think?

Our loving Golden Retriever puppy becomes obsessed with certain toys and will growl when we are near her. Yelling at her doesn't work. Do you have any advice?

Dear Ed, I have spent a LOT of time searching and perusing your website. It has excellent articles and advice. Of course, we all think that our question is just a little different and we should ask it... I didn't find exactly what I was looking for so I thought I would ask you directly. I totally understand if you don't have time to answer but I would appreciate your advice. My husband and I brought home our new golden retriever puppy, a female, and the obvious leader of the...

My dogs have lived in harmony for three years and now want to kill each other. What do you suggest? Do you think they will every be able to co-exist again?

Hi. I have two female dogs who have lived in harmony for three years that now want to kill each other. One dog is a shepherd/huskey (possibly part timber wolf. I was told this when I got her, but did not believe the owner until I saw a timber wolf that looked exactly like my dog); the other is a beagle mix with I don't know what (could be pit bull, boxer...?). Both have been very gentle, but the sheherd/huskey has always been territorial. She won't let anyone near her food or she w...

Recommended What is the benefit of picking up a dog's food after a certain amount of time?

Hi Cindy, I remember seeing somewhere on your site that when your dogs are fed it's picked up after a certain amount of time. The time I can't remember, 20 minutes to an hour, I think. My question was what is the benefit of this??My German Shepherd never eats all of her food in one go and I feel guilty about taking it up after a set time, as I know she always goes back to it before bed time and finishes it off.?Is this bad for her? Recommended My dog bit me & tore my lip and a couple months ago she bit my daughter in the lip. She isn’t a biter so I thought maybe she smelled other dogs on our clothing. She seems sad after each event.

My ten year old Keeshonden bit me and tore my lip. This happened on the same day that I had been playing with another dog up close away from home. I was behind her head and she turned and bit my lip off. I believe it was because I had the smell of the other dog all over me and my dog wasn't looking. The only other time this had happened was a couple of months prior when my dog bit my daughter on the lip (not as hard) after she had been playing with a dog earlier that day at a friend's home. M...

Do your videos train dogs to hit an arm which is holding a gun? We live an area where the Bloods and Cripps have run through our back yard.

I was wondering what your opinion is on the idea that a canine should take out the weapon hand when confronting an armed suspect. I live in a neighborhood where two rival gangs live; the "bloods" and the "cripps," and there have been times when the chased suspects have run through our back yards. Some have been armed, some have not. Do you have any videos showing how to train a canine to take out the weapon hand and then bite strategically to disable the intruder. Here is a senerio: An armed ...

The dominant dog collar is functionall a choke collar just with a different design. You argue that it isn't. Can you please explain why?

Hi Ed, Following your advise from one of your DVDs I did recently purchase from Leerburg a Dominant Dog Collar together with a Herm Sprenger Prong Collar. When I received it I realized that your Dominant Dog Collar is functionally a Choke Collar albeit with a somewhat different design. I am somewhat confused since you in the same DVD (along with other trainers I have talked to) argue against the use of Choke Collar. I am hesitant to putting this Dominant Dog Collar on my 8 months o...

My 5 month old Shar Pei is not very social with me and my vet thinks I am going to have problems with him when he gets older. What do you think?

I have question on whether the pup I have may be at risk of being a fear biter. The dog is a five-month-old Shar Pei male, that we have had since he was 16 weeks. The mother was outgoing, father was more standoffish, but friendly to strangers at the dog show with the owner present. The pup was/is shy, and it has taken about 6 weeks since he has been with us to approach us with a wagging tale, but still reluctant to be petting on the head and neck (backs off), but more agreeable for pets u...

My dog barks ferociously at anyone passing my car when I'm not present. I'm considering a bark collar but I don't want to inhibit his protective instincts. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Cindy, I have a 14 month old male german shepherd that travels around in the car with me all of the time. He is very good in the vehicle when I am present, but when I leave him unattened he barks ferociously at everything that moves within his view. I am considering putting a bark collar on him whenever I require to leave him in the vehicle alone. My concern is that I don't want this to inhibit his protective instincts in anyway. Your insight and suggestions would be much appreciated.

My dog will not come when it does not have the long line or the prong collar on. She plays keep away. What should I do?

Dear Mr. Frawley, I was wondering if you could help us with a problem we are having with our 9-month-old GSD. We watched your obedience tape and have been working with her on the here command. We have put her on a long line and have treats and praise for her when she returns. One problem is, she knows when the line comes off, that she is free and will dash off, so we've been keeping it on. Another problem is... she has been running out through our front door and when I call her she...

Recommended Can you tell me how you set up your training sessions?

Cindy, Can you tell me how you set up your training sessions? For example, do you work on only one exercise at a time? Do you go over learned behaviors and then teach new behaviors? As a trainer, I do the familiar exercises, then the new stuff, then go back to an exercise the dog does really well, so we can end on a positive note. How do you set up your sessions? How long do they run? How many minutes do your sessions run? How frequently? 7 days a week? 5? 3? Thank you for your input.

My dog likes to smell and eventually lick our other dog's urine until he begins to slobber and salivate. How do I correct this behavior and what is the cause of it?

I purchased our dog from Lynx you in 2005 and I'm wondering if you can help me solve a problem I started to have with him. My girlfriend adopted a lab from the animal shelter and they get along great, but when the lab urinates Lynx has to run over smell and eventually lick the lab's urine until Lynx begins to slobber and salivate severely. How do I correct this behavior, and what is the cause of the behavior? Thanks.

My dog is a therapy dog and makes this gurgley, growling sound when she visits with another dog. What am I doing wrong and how can I correct it?

Hi, I have 3 GSDs and my one is a certified therapy dog now. She is very sweet to people and dogs. When she visits with another dog she makes this loud gurgley, growling sound but doesn't lunge, snap, or bite. Its almost like she's trying to talk to them but it startles people. I give her a loud verbal correction as well as with the correction (choke chain) collar. She stops at that point but does it again with the next dog. What am I doing wrong and how can I correct it? Thank You

How do I get my Pits to stop running the fence and getting into fights because of another dog?

I have two pitbulls that are brother and sister that are almost three years old. I have come home twice now to them being a bloody mess. They get into fights and the sister always loses and this time she could have died... this never happens when I'm home and I really don't want to make one stay inside because of this. I am pretty sure what causes it because when I'm home I see the signs. It starts up because of a neighbor walking her dogs and stopping in front of my house with her dog......

My 8 month old puppy bites my hand when I try to lure him like the dogs in the video The Power of Training with Food. Any advice?

I have watched the video on training with food with Michael Ellis. The dogs follow the food with their noses and push into his hand but my 8 mo. old GSD bites and gnaws at my hand when I try to lure him. I have practiced holding the food in the correct way etc. but can't get him to stop biting my hand and instead just follow/be lured by my hand. Any advice? Thanks!

What do you suggest for training a 9 month old Lab who jumps on people when they first come in the house?

I have a 9 month old Lab that is super excitable and jumps all over anyone when they first come in. Family members, strangers, delivery men, it makes no difference. I've been trying to teach him to do a down stay when I answer the door but he is so hyper! He does pretty well when it's just me at home and we practice this but as soon as the kids come home from school he's all over the place! What do you suggest?
