Recommended I don’t understand the difference between a choke collar and a dominant dog collar. It seems like they are both used as a Jerk & Release correction.

I do not understand why the chain choke collar can cause neck injuries and the dominant dog collar doesn't. I have seen the DVD on the dominant dog collar, and I understand about the value of keeping the collar right behind the ears, but it still seems to me that it is a "jerk and release" action, just like the chain choke collar. Is it the placement on the dog's neck the difference? Or the fact that it will give "softer" jerks? I'm not getting the mechanics of the difference. Thank you.

Do your videos train dogs to hit an arm which is holding a gun? We live an area where the Bloods and Cripps have run through our back yard.

I was wondering what your opinion is on the idea that a canine should take out the weapon hand when confronting an armed suspect. I live in a neighborhood where two rival gangs live; the "bloods" and the "cripps," and there have been times when the chased suspects have run through our back yards. Some have been armed, some have not. Do you have any videos showing how to train a canine to take out the weapon hand and then bite strategically to disable the intruder. Here is a senerio: An armed ...

The dominant dog collar is functionall a choke collar just with a different design. You argue that it isn't. Can you please explain why?

Hi Ed, Following your advise from one of your DVDs I did recently purchase from Leerburg a Dominant Dog Collar together with a Herm Sprenger Prong Collar. When I received it I realized that your Dominant Dog Collar is functionally a Choke Collar albeit with a somewhat different design. I am somewhat confused since you in the same DVD (along with other trainers I have talked to) argue against the use of Choke Collar. I am hesitant to putting this Dominant Dog Collar on my 8 months o...

My 5 month old Shar Pei is not very social with me and my vet thinks I am going to have problems with him when he gets older. What do you think?

I have question on whether the pup I have may be at risk of being a fear biter. The dog is a five-month-old Shar Pei male, that we have had since he was 16 weeks. The mother was outgoing, father was more standoffish, but friendly to strangers at the dog show with the owner present. The pup was/is shy, and it has taken about 6 weeks since he has been with us to approach us with a wagging tale, but still reluctant to be petting on the head and neck (backs off), but more agreeable for pets u...

My dog barks ferociously at anyone passing my car when I'm not present. I'm considering a bark collar but I don't want to inhibit his protective instincts. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Cindy, I have a 14 month old male german shepherd that travels around in the car with me all of the time. He is very good in the vehicle when I am present, but when I leave him unattened he barks ferociously at everything that moves within his view. I am considering putting a bark collar on him whenever I require to leave him in the vehicle alone. My concern is that I don't want this to inhibit his protective instincts in anyway. Your insight and suggestions would be much appreciated.

My dog will not come when it does not have the long line or the prong collar on. She plays keep away. What should I do?

Dear Mr. Frawley, I was wondering if you could help us with a problem we are having with our 9-month-old GSD. We watched your obedience tape and have been working with her on the here command. We have put her on a long line and have treats and praise for her when she returns. One problem is, she knows when the line comes off, that she is free and will dash off, so we've been keeping it on. Another problem is... she has been running out through our front door and when I call her she...

I'm thinking about muzzling my dogs while I'm gone, so they can have free roam of the house and not chew thinkgs up. Is it a bad idea to leave a muzzled dog home alone?

Cindy, hopefully you can help me with a simple question. I have two dogs, brother and sister, they are half American Bulldog and half Bull Mastiff. They are not aggressive towards people at all, as a matter of fact, they have never aggressed on a person. I currently keep them inside a six sided pen inside my house when I go to work. But, I want to start leaving them inside the house alone, but I don't trust them not to chew the furniture/walls once they get bored and figure out that I ...

Recommended Can you tell me how you set up your training sessions?

Cindy, Can you tell me how you set up your training sessions? For example, do you work on only one exercise at a time? Do you go over learned behaviors and then teach new behaviors? As a trainer, I do the familiar exercises, then the new stuff, then go back to an exercise the dog does really well, so we can end on a positive note. How do you set up your sessions? How long do they run? How many minutes do your sessions run? How frequently? 7 days a week? 5? 3? Thank you for your input.

My dog is a therapy dog and makes this gurgley, growling sound when she visits with another dog. What am I doing wrong and how can I correct it?

Hi, I have 3 GSDs and my one is a certified therapy dog now. She is very sweet to people and dogs. When she visits with another dog she makes this loud gurgley, growling sound but doesn't lunge, snap, or bite. Its almost like she's trying to talk to them but it startles people. I give her a loud verbal correction as well as with the correction (choke chain) collar. She stops at that point but does it again with the next dog. What am I doing wrong and how can I correct it? Thank You

How do I get my Pits to stop running the fence and getting into fights because of another dog?

I have two pitbulls that are brother and sister that are almost three years old. I have come home twice now to them being a bloody mess. They get into fights and the sister always loses and this time she could have died... this never happens when I'm home and I really don't want to make one stay inside because of this. I am pretty sure what causes it because when I'm home I see the signs. It starts up because of a neighbor walking her dogs and stopping in front of my house with her dog......

My 8 month old puppy bites my hand when I try to lure him like the dogs in the video The Power of Training with Food. Any advice?

I have watched the video on training with food with Michael Ellis. The dogs follow the food with their noses and push into his hand but my 8 mo. old GSD bites and gnaws at my hand when I try to lure him. I have practiced holding the food in the correct way etc. but can't get him to stop biting my hand and instead just follow/be lured by my hand. Any advice? Thanks!

What do you suggest for training a 9 month old Lab who jumps on people when they first come in the house?

I have a 9 month old Lab that is super excitable and jumps all over anyone when they first come in. Family members, strangers, delivery men, it makes no difference. I've been trying to teach him to do a down stay when I answer the door but he is so hyper! He does pretty well when it's just me at home and we practice this but as soon as the kids come home from school he's all over the place! What do you suggest?

My 6-month-old Kuvasz is displaying fear aggression. The problem seems to occur only when she is out of her own territory. How should I handle this dog?

Hello Mr. Frawley, I read through your questions and answers on fear aggression but still had some questions; I hope you do not mind that I am e-mailing you. You are doubtless busy, but I would appreciate a reply if you have the time. My family purchased a Kuvasz puppy, our first, about four months ago, and she is now six months old. This female, named Sapphire, seems to be very territorial inside the house and in our backyard, which is somewhat normal for the breed, except ...

My husband’s dog Gus is very aggressive to me. I am expecting a baby soon. My husband knows Gus doesn’t like children, but won’t get rid of the dog. What should I do?

Hi my name is Lisa and I live in Brooklyn. I have an intense situation that I would like your feedback on. I currently living in a household with a dog that I am fearful of. Let me give you some history. About 9 years ago my then boyfriend (Joe) purchased a male/American pit bull terrier (Gus). For 11 months before he matured I would walk Gus, feed him to help Joe out and even bring Gus up to my house where he socialized with other people. One day my grandmother approached Gus as h...

Recommended My dog tries to follow us when we leave our gated estate. Do you have any ideas on what we could do to stop this behavior?

Hello, We are a British couple living in Thailand and we own a Thai Dog. We've had him since he was 10 weeks old and he is now 9 months old. After reading up on Thai dog breeds we learned that they are a very stubborn breed of dog and fail to acknowledge commands at times. We live on a gated estate where he is free to run around all day with his brothers and sisters but when he sees us leave the estate he tries to follow us down the road. (The entrance to the estate is on a blind corner to...

I am interested in learning tracking with my dog. Can you recommend an order to your tracking videos? Is there any supporting material in the books?

Hello, I am interesting learning tracking with my Wire Haired Pointing Griffon. She is 3. We do obedience work, but I would like to work on some tracking. I see several videos of yours. Can you recommend an order to this? And if there is any supporting material in the books? It seems there is a level 1 tracking but I cannot figure out how to match the video numbers. If you can give me a recommended viewing order based on video titles that would be great. Thanks, John

Hello, I have a five month old GSD that I got at eight weeks. On walks, if she is not pulling, is allowing her to walk in front going to be a problem in establishing pack structure? I find that once our walk gets headed back she likes to be in front and can be quite polite about it. The walk stops if she pulls. Thank you.

Does all that training train into aggression when being an adult? I mean, does the dog learn with the target for personal protection as a threat not just a sleeve overtime?

I have watched Teaching Protection Skills without a Decoy and it is very impressive, but I have a question. Does all that training train into aggression when being an adult? I mean, does the dog learn with the target for personal protection as a threat not just a sleeve overtime? I'm a big fan :)
