My narcotics dog has a problem, it is cueing off me during my training. I have a problem finding people to make my finds - what should I do?

Dear Ed: I am a drug dog handler in South Carolina. I am having a problem with my dog cueing off of me to let him know where the drugs are. I know I can solve this by getting someone to hide the drugs for me but most of the time I can't get anyone to help me. Is it better for me to hold off on training until I can have someone hide the drugs for me or continue to hide the drugs myself and work the dog everyday. Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated, Thanks. Todd K...

Does back yard play biting and chasing between my dog & my son’s dog contribute to more aggressive chasing?

Hi Cindy, I have just ordered the DVD on training with an E-collar and hopefully I'll be able to use that to answer part of my question. I have a well-trained yellow lab/husky mix (the dominant dog), and introduced my son's 1-1/2 year old stray (very little training) into my home. Both dogs are 60 pounds, get along well, but engage in chasing and play-biting behavior, running around and nipping at each other's necks and legs and mouthing each other. No one is getting hurt. Is this ...

We have 9 dogs and while we were all good terrific, fights have been escalating quite recently both in frequency and severity. Why, after years of no fights, would a fight break out?

Hi Mr. Frawley... I've been exploring the internet because a problem has developed in our household. I found your site, and it's one of the most intelligent and helpful on the web. I saw that you have addressed the problem we're having about family pets fighting, and have read your response: "You've created a pack, either separate the dogs or find some of them new homes", so I won't repeat the question about what to do...but I'm so distraught over it that I want to better un...

Our 2 year old short-haired pointer has begun to get aggressive. I do not want to put him down, what can we do?

Our two-year-old German Short Haired Pointer has begun to get aggressive. We brought him home from the breeder at 8 weeks. He has been a wonderful gentle loving dog to me my wife and 10 and 13-year-old sons. At 6 months we put him on an electric invisible fence, which has worked perfectly. He has been a wonderful family pet. If we had any problems it was his ?over-friendliness? - jumping on and licking all guests. A few months ago we noticed he was barking at joggers running by the...

My 2 dogs Petunia and Buttercups fight all the time, twice a day. Is there a solution?

I am really rather desperate and am looking for someone who can empathize with my plight with my two cairn terriers. Both are females and around a year and a half old. Recently, the alpha dog (our smallest of the two) has been initiating vicious fights with the other dog over affection with my husband and their feed dish (for examples). I realize that this is a jealously issue, but keeping these two in the same house is becoming an impossible task. I just fear, however, that Petuni...

I have 4 adult dogs. One male was neutered and our female has attacked him. I am concerned about our other male. What should I do to stop this fighting?

I have three German Shepherds - a 4 year old male, a 4 year old bitch and their 18 month old son. My bitch and dog got along great and mated. They had 9 pups and we kept 1 dog, now 18 months old. But the bitch was a rescue dog who was previously mistreated. We had the dog castrated first and at a later date the bitch spayed as she shows aggression to anyone but myself and my husband and 3 children, but found this was a big mistake getting the dog castrated because since then the bitch wil...

My boyfriend's dog is 5 years old and still is not housebroken. He is destroying furniture by peeing on it. What can I do?

I recently moved in with my boyfriend. I knew beforehand that his dog, a 5 year old German Shepherd / Doberman was not very well trained. After my boyfriend's divorce he allowed his dog to sleep in bed with him. Since I moved in last November, Buddy knows not to do that but will sneak up there when I go in the shower or my boyfriend will allow him to when I leave the room. Not only that, but this dog is allowed to sleep on the couch. Everything smells like dog! He also has 2 Doxin's that ...

I want to use your bottlefeeding formula for my litter of puppies but I can’t find corn syrup, can I use glucose syrup?

Good Morning, Thank you for your puppy formula. My APBT just had 12 puppies 2 weeks ago and we are using your formula on the 6 largest ones so that the smaller ones can get a full tummy of moms milk. We tried the powder formula first and they hated it. We thought we would struggle until I came across your formula on the net. My questions is "I can't find Corn Syrup but I did find Glucose Syrup which says its corn based, is this the same and is it ok to use?" Ivan

My 2 young dogs bark every time they see us walk in front of the window at night. What can we do to stop this behavior?

First of all, thanks for your email advice from your last note. We did have our pups checked for worms, and sure enough, they had them Since treatment our male pup's energy has gone up noticeably. He is now enjoying the ball-on-a-string game. Here's my question: Our pups are pretty quiet most of the day and night, but sometimes during the evening they start a barking fit loud enough to wake the dead. They can see us moving inside our house in the evening as we pass in front of the ...

My pup of 16 weeks is starting to show "stranger anxiety." Should I do something now while she is still young?

Hi Cindy, First off, thanks for all the great information on your web site and videos. I bought both Basic Obedience and Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 Months and found them very helpful. Looking for some advice about by Doberman puppy. She's 16 weeks old and starting to show "stranger anxiety." If she is in our fenced-in yard off leash, and someone walks by the house, or she spots one of our neighbors, her hair stands up and she barks like mad. Even though she is a puppy, she ...

Our 11-month GS female pees from excitement when a new person greets her. Are there any helpful hints for this situation?

Hi, I am a huge fan! Thank you for your advice and products. We have an 11 month old GS female and she is spectacular. Several of your DVDs have been amazingly helpful to us. Our GS is brilliant, sweet, trained, and a pleasure. Since she was a puppy, she pees from excitement when a new person greets her. She also does this when I come home from a business trip and she hasn't seen me in a few days. Several have told me that this is submissive urination and will hopefully go a...

Our Chow-mix has bitten three people. We are going to put the dog to sleep but a trainer said there was medication that could help. What do you think?

I have a 5 year old chow/sharpei-mix male dog. My wife and I enrolled him in a obedience school when he was 2 years because he bit someone in the hand. Since then he has bitten three people in the arm or the hand. These people have always been over at the house. He is now serving his third quarantine. We have decided to put him down, even though it is very hard. The trainer told us that maybe we can medicate the dog to eliminate the aggression. Have you heard of this med. and what do you think?

Our loving Golden Retriever puppy becomes obsessed with certain toys and will growl when we are near her. Yelling at her doesn't work. Do you have any advice?

Dear Ed, I have spent a LOT of time searching and perusing your website. It has excellent articles and advice. Of course, we all think that our question is just a little different and we should ask it... I didn't find exactly what I was looking for so I thought I would ask you directly. I totally understand if you don't have time to answer but I would appreciate your advice. My husband and I brought home our new golden retriever puppy, a female, and the obvious leader of the...

My dogs have lived in harmony for three years and now want to kill each other. What do you suggest? Do you think they will every be able to co-exist again?

Hi. I have two female dogs who have lived in harmony for three years that now want to kill each other. One dog is a shepherd/huskey (possibly part timber wolf. I was told this when I got her, but did not believe the owner until I saw a timber wolf that looked exactly like my dog); the other is a beagle mix with I don't know what (could be pit bull, boxer...?). Both have been very gentle, but the sheherd/huskey has always been territorial. She won't let anyone near her food or she w...

Recommended What is the benefit of picking up a dog's food after a certain amount of time?

Hi Cindy, I remember seeing somewhere on your site that when your dogs are fed it's picked up after a certain amount of time. The time I can't remember, 20 minutes to an hour, I think. My question was what is the benefit of this??My German Shepherd never eats all of her food in one go and I feel guilty about taking it up after a set time, as I know she always goes back to it before bed time and finishes it off.?Is this bad for her? Recommended I don’t understand the difference between a choke collar and a dominant dog collar. It seems like they are both used as a Jerk & Release correction.

I do not understand why the chain choke collar can cause neck injuries and the dominant dog collar doesn't. I have seen the DVD on the dominant dog collar, and I understand about the value of keeping the collar right behind the ears, but it still seems to me that it is a "jerk and release" action, just like the chain choke collar. Is it the placement on the dog's neck the difference? Or the fact that it will give "softer" jerks? I'm not getting the mechanics of the difference. Thank you.

I'm thinking about muzzling my dogs while I'm gone, so they can have free roam of the house and not chew thinkgs up. Is it a bad idea to leave a muzzled dog home alone?

Cindy, hopefully you can help me with a simple question. I have two dogs, brother and sister, they are half American Bulldog and half Bull Mastiff. They are not aggressive towards people at all, as a matter of fact, they have never aggressed on a person. I currently keep them inside a six sided pen inside my house when I go to work. But, I want to start leaving them inside the house alone, but I don't trust them not to chew the furniture/walls once they get bored and figure out that I ...

My dog will not come when it does not have the long line or the prong collar on. She plays keep away. What should I do?

Dear Mr. Frawley, I was wondering if you could help us with a problem we are having with our 9-month-old GSD. We watched your obedience tape and have been working with her on the here command. We have put her on a long line and have treats and praise for her when she returns. One problem is, she knows when the line comes off, that she is free and will dash off, so we've been keeping it on. Another problem is... she has been running out through our front door and when I call her she...
