My dog eats rocks. What can I do?
Hi Ed,
I finally got to read the Q&A on your web site and realize you are an expert on canine behavior. So I am going to ask for your advice on my German Shorthaired Pointer.
He is a wonderful soul "after" I took him to behavior training. "Before" he did not respect me as a pack leader, for good reasons as I had no idea I was supposed to be one, and small dogs have attacked him before when he was a puppy. When he was an adult, he would bark and go submit a small dog. He woul...

My 8 month old lab will not allow me to take his toys. Yesterday he bit me when I took his toy away. What should I do?
Hello I was wondering if you could give me some advice. We have an 8-month old neutered German shepherd mix (lab and husky we think) and I am having trouble controlling him. We have a three-year-old daughter, so I know it is imperative that he listens and behaves.
He has a habit of picking up her toys and chewing them -- sometimes swallowing them.
No matter how I handle the situation, he will not drop the item in his mouth. Yesterday he got my mop cover and started chewing h...

I have a 3-yr-old American Bulldog preparing for the CGC test. Since day one, she has been a submissive wetter. Will this get my dog disqualified?
Hello,
My name is Katrina. I have a three year old American Bulldog that is preparing to take the CGC test. I got her when she was six weeks old. Since day one she has been a submissive wetter when she gets excited or when anyone bends over to pet her. The vet told me that she would outgrow it when we took her for her first checkup, but she never did. I have even tried to have people to give her a treat as they bend over and pet her. I thought this would help eliminate her urinatio...

I'm looking at the rubber mats you carry as a bedding option. Can you descrip the durability. My dog chewed a hole in the soft bed I bought overnight.
Cindy,
I am considering the purchase of a Leerburg Rubber Kennel Mat for my 1 year old German Shepherd but before I place an order I would like to ask a question. Can you please describe the durability of this item? While my dog pretty much outgrown her puppy chewing stage, I just want to make sure that it is ?tough? enough to resist any biting temptations.
I made a mistake four months ago of purchasing a dog bed only to wake up one morning and find that it had a large hole....

My dog barks on her way into her puppy class and at the vet’s office, what can I do?
My dog is a cocker and 9 months old. When I take her to the YMCA for beginning puppy class she barks and barks really loud all the way into the classroom. She stops when we get into the room. She also barks and barks when I take her to the Vet and and I have tried doing this every month to get her used to the place. She doesn't stop barking at the Vet's. What can I do?
Thanks, Karen

My Bichon Frise shows aggression to children. I am taking him to obedience classes at Pet Smart. This is not helping. What can I do?
I know you probably don't hear a lot about these dogs, but here goes:
I purchased him from a private breeder (mother very sweet, siblings all looked fine-clean home, etc - husband and wife stays home with dogs. We brought him home and everything was fine. He would play bite was the only major thing I noticed in like the first month. About a month after we got him, some relatives came to stay for 6 weeks temporarily with us. They have 2 children, ages 2 and a half and 6. Both of the childre...

I have a client who has a very aggressive shelter dog and cannot seem to give the kind of correction that is necessary to control this dog. What can I do?
I am a novice dog trainer (3yrs.) and have a client that has a dog who is very territorial and overprotective of her. Obviously, like in many other cases, the owner cannot give the dog the correction it needs to extinguish the behavior. I suggested an electric collar and she got one. My concern is this: I know that if the dog is at the height of its frenzy and gets a big correction, it will probably redirect at her. The dog cannot be muzzled at all times and I don't want them to get hurt but ...

Do you have any advice for fending off aggressive dogs while riding a motorcycle?
Hello all,
I was cruising around your website and I must say, VERY IMPRESSIVE!! You folks really know your dogs! While I don't presently own a dog ( we had a beagle when I was young ) I like to ride my bicycle -- a lot. Which is why I'm writing.
My problem is: One of my favorite stomping grounds, and where I will live when I retire is Door County. The problem here is when riding on Door County's many farm roads, every now and then some idiot's aggressive unrestrained dog com...

Should I neuter my puppy?
I've read Leerburg's info and all the threads on Neutering. And tons of other material, experiences, etc. I've gone through this 7 years ago with my Adult. But the more I read the less convincing the messages are on either side.
Do you think the Puppy's behavior (dominance) can be controlled by continuing to be a Leader? Or for ultimate security because both dogs are involved should the Puppy be neutered? If it was my decision straight-up I don't want to do it... but I don't want to miss m...

My Dutch Shepherd pup climbs out of the ex-pen, should I get a higher one?
Hi Cindy. All is going well with the Dutch Shepard pup thanks to your support. In an early segment of the video you recommended. An ex-pen is recommended. Unfortunately the pup has been able to climb out so it keeps trying. Would you recommend an even higher one (ours is about waist high) or another method for keeping the dog around activity but not always trying to escape. Many Thanks,

Will I always need to use food rewards with my 7 year old dog?
Hi again!
I have a dog that is 7 years old. I trained him at Petco and he passed the Advanced Canine Good Citizen test 5 years ago. I was never taught how to fade food rewards. He now only really listens to me when I have food rewards and checks out after I reward him. In the Basic Obedience Course, Frawley stated that if I hadn’t moved to a variable and random reward schedule after 2 years of a fixed reward schedule, that I would not be able to fade the rewards. Will I need to use food r...

My 16-week-old German Shepherd puppy barks at people and is scared of cars when we are out on walks. Do you have advice?
Hi Cindy,
We have a 16 month old male GSD, (we picked him up at 12 weeks old), he’s great at home a great demeanor, playful.
When we take him for walks, he barks at people. Strangely, in a couple of situations, when they came close with open palm and a non-threatening demeanor, his bark changed to a whimper, almost as afraid.
We have been crate training Max and working on establishing the pack hierarchy. Please note, when we arrived at the breeder and initially met him, he did not ba...

Can my dog whelp her puppies in the kennel within earshot of other dogs or would this be too stressful for her?
Hi, Cindy.
I know you guys bred GSD for many years. I have your Whelping video and I am watching it again. I am building a kennel and training facility and I would like to ask for your advice.
How important is it that the Dam be completely separated from the presence of all other dogs during whelping? What I mean is, can she be in the same structure and within earshot, but totally separated and secured from other dogs or do you still feel this is too stressful for her?
It would be...

Hi. I'm trying to choose a tug toy for my 8 month old GSD. He is a tough tugger. I want something strong, yet small enough to stick in my pants pocket to have on me during training. He has a pretty good grip. There are so many to choose from!

Is it ok to use a prong and e-collar in a very cold climate? Should we switch to a slip lead?
Hi Cindy,
We have been primarily using prong collars with our pups since early spring. We live in Canada, and a part of Canada that gets extremely cold.
One of our dogs is a big powerful guy, who we are working through reactivity with. The prong has been a great tool.
I was thinking today that cold metal might not be the best idea in the winter, and I believe a plastic pinch may become fragile in our temperatures as well - probably not good for our e-collar batteries either (ca...

Cindy we got a German Shepherd puppy at the age of 4 weeks we were told he was 8 weeks old back in August of last year every time we correct the puppy he pees on the floor as well as now is chewing up items that does not pertain to his toys what could be the cause of this. He is now 11 months old will be a year next month on the 26th what can we do to prevent this from continuing any suggestions or ide...

My 4 month old puppy sleeps in his crate at night and readily jumps in but during the day he throws a fit if he's confined in there. What can I do?
I have a now 4 month old (European) Doberman puppy. We have done a fair bit of crate training, and he sleeps in there at night, and readily jumps in with a treat. He doesn't "hate" the crate - but since day 1 when he came home at 10 weeks old, he HATES being locked up and not being right by you or what interests him. Barking and throwing a fit since the day he came home unless he's flat out exhausted, and sometimes even then.
There is plenty of play, exercise, training, enrichment, etc. H...

How do we tell what kind of aggression our 2 dogs are showing when we have guests over? Is it fear, frustration or prey drive?
Dear Cindy,
we have 2 dogs (a 5-year old Beagle/GSD mix and a 4-year old Australian SD/Lab/Black retriever mix, both males) which have been exhibiting increasing aggressive behavior issues over the last 3 months. I am not sure how to identify what type of aggression it is (fear, frustration, or simple prey drive) and therefore what type of training/counter conditioning would be the most suitable one. Indeed, I suspected fear aggression. However, I learnt in one of Michael Ellis' videos that ...
