I'm getting a puppy from a breeder and there are only 2 males so I will not get to choose my pup. I am afraid I will get the alpha male. Can an alpha dog be a good family dog?
Dear Mr. Frawley,
I hope it's not too bold to bother you but I don't know anybody else to ask. A lot of people claim be dog experts but don?t know much. I have been a follower of your podcasts and website and hope you can give me some advise.
I was waiting for a puppy from a breeder whom I chose carefully. Today the puppies were born - unfortunately just three, 1 female, 2 males.
I had decided to take a male and I'm in second place to choose on the breeder's list, wit...

What can you tell me about desensitizing my puppy to dogs barking? It's the biggest stress for him. Could this be a bad, early warning sign of something in his temperament?
Hi,
I have a quick question... I really value your advice! I have a 14 week GSD puppy named Leo that I've had since 9 weeks. I'm following all your advice and it's going great. He's very outgoing, LOVES people, very very mouthy, extremely smart... learns QUICK! I take him for walks on busy streets and he's great, ok with trucks, Harleys... random noises. Sometimes when he sees something he doesn't recognize he'll get cautious, but then plug forward bravely to check it out. I'll dro...

My young dog is yelping and whining when we play tug. Is this good or bad?
When I play tug with my 10 month old German Shepherd, she is starting to yelp and whine while holding on to the bite toy. She is pulling stronger than she ever has. Her prey drive is at its highest point also. So I do not know if she is whining because she wants the toy badly or maybe she is in pain. Is this common? Is it a good or bad thing?
Sincerely,
Sven

My K-9 partner works very well with an electric collar, the problem is the dog will drag me down the street when I put a leash on him. What can I do?
Mr. Frawley,
Let me start by saying "Great job" on the police tactical deployment and muzzle fighting videos. These were both great, and helped our unit a lot.
I am a police K9 handler and trainer in Fl. I am a big fan of your site and your videos. I have been involved in police K9 for 6 years, and have prior Schutzhund experience. I have been handling a very tough german shepherd for the last three years. He has very high drives and is very hard. He was almost washed out of...

I realized our collar is too loose. What can we do to adjust the size of the collar so that it would stay behind the ears as it is indicated on your photographs?
Hello Ed,
Warm greetings to you all and thank you for your wonderful visual website about the pinch/prong collars! Five weeks ago my husband and I adopted our first dog from a rescue group. She was sentenced to death because she was too fearful while waiting in the shelter. Thanks to Hopes Haven in Salem, Oregon, her life was saved and she is very affectionate toward all people & animals and very submissive. However, we turned out not to be the strongest pack leaders so on the walk...

I know the collar is to fit snug behind the ears but to get the collar so it stays up there, it seems like the collar is too tight on her. What are your thoughts?
Afternoon,
I have purchased 3 of your DVDs and am very pleased with them. Question I have is the proper fit of the prong collar. I have a 16 month old 90 lb spaded female Shepherd and have been working with her since I got her at 2 months old. My question is that I know the collar is to fit snug behind the ears but to get the collar so it stays up there, it seems like the collar is to tight on her. Its like I can't place my fingers under it. I have the large collar so would that ...

How long should my pup be trained in 'Prey Bite Work' before we start 'Obedience'?
Hi Ed,You were right about trying to work prey drive after a dog has had defense work at too young an age is truly hard. (an editors note here : see the article I wrote titled Training Defense Before Prey is STUPID!!!).I also found a local training place that has your philosophy in mind while training dogs. But since I have made so many mistakes with my 4 year old Root I feel that I need to start over with a puppy. This fact was sadly made evident to me today. They invited me to their fac...

We sent our dog to a guard dog trainer. I think he created some problems. Can you offer any advise?
I really enjoyed reading your site, & like everyone else, have a few questions. (I hope you don't mind) I had my GSD obedience & protection trained at the Guard Dog Training center, Berkshire Park, NSW Australia, by Fred & Lewana Osmani. When I first approached them Lewana talked to us about dog training, but every question I asked she seemed to cut me off & asked me to buy their video showing what you get. We did & were impressed with what we seen. After 2 weeks (in which they said it wo...

Last week I received a rescued Golden Retriever. His name is Boy. Is it too late to change his name in some way?
Last week I received a rescued Golden Retriever - age 6-7? Still has a lot of puppy in him. He needs proper training but is a wonderful dog. His name is "Boy." is it too late to change his name in some way? All I know is that he originally came from a pound in GA and the family moved to PA but were told to give him up. Boy is the only name he knows so I understand keeping that but, I think, he deserves something a bit more like him. And yes, he is a boy. Eager to hear your suggestions o...

I took my dog to a professional for training. The professional hung the dog with a second helper. Now my dog shakes whenever I take the training collar out. Ideas?
Dear Mr. Frawley,
Recently, I decided that I wanted to learn competition obedience, and had a Schutzhund instructor recommended to me. I took two 4-year-old males that I had taken through several obedience classes. One male is extremely pain sensitive, and I have always been very careful since he would yelp with a light pressure pop on his choke leash.
My previous instructor had never taught me to teach my dogs to focus, and I wanted to teach my dogs this skill when heeling....

My 10 month old Rottweiler is being trained with Michael Ellis’s methods. When my dog doesn't do his positions, how should I correct him? How can I motivate him too?
Cindy,
Hello, first of all great info I have received from your newsletters and the question and answer part of the webpage.
I have a 10 month old rottweiler that I am training with Michael Ellis methods. I have the 3 DVDs and I have followed them through. I have two questions on them. When I am asking my dog positions, sometimes he makes a mistake or just stares at me, this is usually when I am 2-3 feet away in front of him. Should I correct with an e-collar or a prong collar when he d...

Do you think adding it to kibble is a bad idea? Also, I have three Great Danes; wouldn’t it get quite costly to do the meat add ins?
Its hard to add a feeding schedule when I work away from home. Do you think adding it to kibble is a bad idea? I don't have an reservations about feeding the Honest Kitchen with additional meat. However, what meats would you add that would be easy? Also, I have three Great Danes; wouldn't it get quite costly to do the meat add ins?
Thanks,
Amy

Anything dehydrated at higher than 118 degrees begins to kill enzymes and is no longer consider raw. What temperature if Honest Kitchen dehydrated at?
I am a raw feeder for my dogs. I have recently took up raw eating for myself too and have learned if things are dehydrated at higher then 118 degree it begins to kill enzymes and is no longer considered raw. So I am wondering if your raw dehydrated dog food list what temperature it is dehydrated at as I would like to buy some if it is truly raw?
Thank you,
Robin

Can I pre-mix with water, add meat protein, put in small zip lock containers and freeze my dog's twice daily portions?
Hi Cindy,
I have two small yorkshire terriers who have been eating Honest Kitchen for about 18 months. They are doing fantastic. I feed Preference and supplement with meat protein, fish, turkey, etc. The older one (12 years) had continuous tummy upsets (continuously soft stool) for the first 10 years of his life. Since eating Preference we have not had one instance of runny, soft stool. The younger one (2 years) was raised on it from the time he was 12 weeks old. Their coats are beautiful ...

We got a new dog 2 weeks ago and when she plays with our male dog he gets quite rough. She rolls over and puts her tail between her legs. Should we step in?
Hi,
My husband and I really enjoy watching and reading your various articles on dog training. We currently have two GSD (1 male, 1 female). The female is the newest in the family and the two seem to get along quite well. The question we have is this... the female is very submissive and the male very dominant. We give them their own time to play with us and we also allow them time to play together. The problem (we think) when they play together is that the female just runs after the...

We found a puppy in the middle of the road a few weeks ago and he is blind and deaf. We are having problems housebreaking him. What should we do?
My husband found a small puppy sitting in the middle of the road a few weeks back. The puppy seems to be a pit bull, I don't think he's more than 12 weeks old. This puppy is both blind and deaf. We kept him because I felt if we took him to the shelter no one would want him. We are having a hard time house breaking him and I'm trying to see if there is some way I can do this. We keep him outside during the day, and bring him in at night due to the cold. Do you have any suggestions? He's a ...

We've been feeding our dogs chicken backs since the switch. What should the bone to meat ratio be? Am I anywhere close to getting this right? Is there anything I can give for pain?
Hi Cindy,
A couple of months ago, I sent you an email about my 11 yr. old German Shepherd who has arthritis in her hips. I have switched her, as well as the rest of my dogs, to the raw diet and all are doing very well on it. Their excitement at meal time is unreal. Thank you so much for advising the switch.
I have a few questions that I couldn't find the answers to on your site. One is a feeding question and the other three are about medications/vaccines.
1. We've ...
