What is the best thing I can buy to get my puppy engaged with me?
Thank you Cindy for replying to my previous message. I purchased three of the six DVDs (puppy 8 weeks/months and both power of training with food & markers) you suggested and the training equipment/toys.
They have been great!!! I love them and have learned a lot. The Power of Training with Markers is fantastic, but the one with Training with Food, wow! Fantastic, Michael had me realize I needed to put the brakes on my training and spend more time on engagement. I am also planning t...

What dewormer do you use on your puppies and at what age do you start? I was also told that my pups have a genetic defect because they had a bad reaction to vaccinations.
Mr. Frawley,
What dewormer do you use on your puppies and at what age do you start? I have a litter of Goldens and my vet told me not to deworm my puppies until they are 6 weeks old and come in for their vaccinations.
I am not planning on vaccinating my puppies after a horrible experience and reading your articles. All my puppies survived but it is not something I am willing to go through again.
P.S. I was told that my puppies must have a genetic problem or they woul...

I have a Doberman who seems to always have the need to be touching me. Is this an issue, should I be worrying about it?
I purchased "Your Puppy 8 Weeks" DVD. Very informative. During our life time my 4 children and myself have had an assortment of dogs. I just purchased a Doberman puppy in June of this year. This is the first Doberman that we have ever owned. I have had German Shepherds, Labradors, Great Danes, Rotts, also little dogs. My question to you is that my Doberman has, (I call it respect for "my" space, we raise and train horses. This is a must with horses.) If I am walking, she is right there. O...

My dog is extremely skittish, we kept him isolated for the first 5 months of his life and he’s afraid of everything. What can we do?
Hi Cindy,
I've gone over your website many times and I've learned a lot from it. I have some questions in regards to my 1 year old intact male Shiba Inu. My boyfriend and I got him from a breeder last year when he was 10 weeks old. Unfortunately we didn't do enough research. The breeder only brought the sire out to meet us and told us that the mother was too skittish to take out. We bought the puppy anyway. She had warned us not to bring the puppy out anywhere where another dog might be be...

I train my dog for the B in local public areas and have problems with people who want to pet my dog. Do you have any ideas?
I came up with a unique repertoire of responses to people who try to come up and touch my dog when I am working on the "B" crowd stuff. Since I do not have a close club, I utilize parks and certain areas around town.
If they ask then I explain that I am a trainer and busy and would be happy to answer any questions after I finished the excesses. I then explain why I do not allow any person to touch my dog. This has gotten me quite a few training clients by the way. One guy actually ...

When our pup was 5-6 months old on a visit to the vet had a traumatic experience with a stranger. Is there anything we can do to help him? Or is this going to haunt him forever?
I have just googled for information on how to train puppies to not be afraid of some people, and one website made reference to your website.
I am so hopeful that you can offer advice for our beloved puppy. We have a French bulldog/Pug mix that will be 1 year old in January. We bought him when he was 8 weeks old and he has been a wonderful puppy, maybe sometimes a bit hardheaded, but the sweetest most loving and personable dog we?ve ever had. He started out very friendly to everyone...

My new police dog lifts his leg all the time on the track. My voice correction does not seem to phase him. What should I do?
Dear Mr. Frawley,
My name is Matt Fisher and I am a new K-9 handler for the Wooster Police Dept., in Wooster Ohio. My department purchased my K-9 from a "dog trainer" in Ohio and needless to say I have been less than impressed. My dog Ringo is about two and he has needed some serious overhauls. We've had to overcome a serious sleeve fixation and I am currently working on changing his tracking from footstep to tracking through drive.
Luckily for me my friend Doug Hunter a K-9 for the Way...

I have a problem with the come command with my dog.
I have a question for you. I have an almost 10 month old GSD from very good working lines in Germany. He has been working towards his HGH and SchH titles and progressing very well. I got him at about 4 1/2months of age and he never made the 16 week bond with an owner but rather was with dogs at that time, he was given back to the breeder due to personal problems not related to the dog, he originally went out at 8 weeks. Well needless to say he was very independent and slightly doggy when ...

My young dog is yelping and whining when we play tug. Is this good or bad?
When I play tug with my 10 month old German Shepherd, she is starting to yelp and whine while holding on to the bite toy. She is pulling stronger than she ever has. Her prey drive is at its highest point also. So I do not know if she is whining because she wants the toy badly or maybe she is in pain. Is this common? Is it a good or bad thing?
Sincerely,
Sven

What do you expect from a good (working) puppy to show you before you treat him as a mature dog and not as a puppy?
Hello Ed
My name is Sharon, I work in the Israeli swat in puppy program for special forces. We have few malinois puppies in different ages, and we have some disagreement between us about the best age to put real pressure from a decoy on the puppy/dog, I'll be glad if you can answer from your experience with puppies and young dogs, what do you expect from a good (working) puppy to show you before you treat him as a mature dog and not as a puppy. What are the cues we need to see to say i...

My mixed pup chews through every collar and harness I put on him. Is this correctable? How?
I have a behavior problem with my ten month old mixed breed pup. She has the potential to be a good sled dog because she is very strong, but she chews up every harness I put on her. I can't afford much more, so its limiting how much I can really work with her on this. I enjoy recreation sledding and skiijoring, but she is capable of complete destruction of her harness in just the time it takes me to hook myself up or to walk to the back of the sled. She even chews on the front strap while...

Is it possible for a dog who was previously oblivious to the ecollar to become collar wise?
Hi Cindy,
Thanks again for all your wonderful support in the past. I have a wonderful, well behaved dog that I truly enjoy and I can honestly say it is due to the information I have gotten from you and your website. I do have a question about e-collars. I have a 2 year old boxer mix that is wonderful.
I have trained him in the past with a Dogtra e-collar to solidify his recall and added security when we visit the mountains of Vermont and he is off leash. He was always oblivi...

I am a new K9 handler. I have been told that I should not train my dog on meth because its too hard on the dog's nose. Is this true?
I was told that you should not train a dog on meth very often because it would burn its nose. Does this caution hold any weight? If so, how often should I work with that scent? Also, I am a new K-9 handler training the pioneer for my department. My Chief is applying for a DEA permit. Once we receive the permit where do you suggest I get the narcotics to train with? Our city is very small we don't see a lot of cocaine, heroin, etc. I do however have all the meth I need.
Thank You,
Officer ...

My girlfriend has a rescue dog that has bit her twice. Her trainer advised her to Alpha Roll the dog to correct it’s aggressive tendencies. What do you recommend?
My girlfriend is sharing a house with 2 other girls. One of the girls owns the house, and she also owns a Vizla (a 3-year-old dog from a rescue). I understand the dog was abused by a prior owner. The dog has bitten the owner twice, once in the hand (about two weeks ago) and on both her cheeks (two days ago). After the first bite on the hand, the owner sought advice from a dog trainer that advised her to assert an alpha roll by ignoring the dog, not feeding it for a couple days, and then h...

Boomerang, a neutered two-year old Australian Shepherd has bit several people. We cannot find someone to take him and we don't really want to put him to sleep. What can we do?
Hi. I am not sure if this is the right format to ask you a question, but...it is all I see on your web site. If you might be able to help, please read on. If not, could you pass this on to the correct person (if there is such a person).
My husband and I have read quite a bit of your information about aggressive dogs, and we are faced with a dilemma with our own dog.

My dog was attacked when she was a puppy. I've worked on her aggression and have taken her to a dog park but she still behaves aggressively to certain dogs.
Hi Ed,
I have been looking around your site and reading the various articles. I have a 4 year old Labradoodle (poodle X lab) I know it isn't one of the usual breeds you deal with, however I am in need of some advice.
My dog was attacked as a puppy by 7 GSD's. I was out walking her and had let her off the lead in an enclosed space in order to do some training. A man with the pack of dogs walked up to the gate and came in. The dogs saw my pup and pulled the leads out of his ha...
