Sometimes my pit bull becomes aggressive, I think when she has too much energy and is running circles around my apartment. Do you think maybe just more exercise will help?
Mr. Frawley,
Let me first commend you on such an informative and well thought out website. This website keeps me occupied for hours, I just flat out love it.
I am new to dog training but have been around dogs for a while. I am a 20 year college student and I own a pit bull, but let's get back to that in a minute. I recently bought your e-collar DVD and I have purchased the Dogtra 1900 ncp collar (I got it because I saw it was one of your favorites on your web site. I have no...

What are ‘pink registration papers’ for a German shepherd?
Hi Ed,
I was wondering if you would explain the term Pink Paper's to me. I have heard several meanings from different people. I guess this is a dumb question, but I would like to know what is the significance and importance of having a Pink Papered dog?
Thanks,
Walt

Our dog had a reaction to the rattlesnake vaccine, which according to our vet is unusual. What do you think?
Dear Cindy,
Just read your latest comments on vaccinations for dogs. I live in Arizona and Rattle Snake vaccinations are almost a requirement. However, no one told me about the possibilities of some of the possible side effects. My German Shepherd pup (will not be 2 until June 15th.) had his series of two shots under his front leg toward the side in the fatty area. Within a couple weeks I noticed a large lump and took him into the vet. (I must say I have one of the finest vet's I h...

I've been training a Belgian Malinois to be a service dog. He's recently shown dog agression. Let me know if there is anything we can do to help him.
Hello,
I have been training an adolescent rescued Belgian Malinois, with four other people, to be a service dog. He (Cade) has, however, recently shown extreme dog aggression that has created a road block for Cade and threatened his future as a pet. So, he has sent three large dogs to the vet with punctures or open wounds. He's attacked over toys (twice on-leash and twice off), and once trying to "protect" someone from another dog, a nonthreatening dog. We've consulted a behavorist...

I’m confused about allowing my puppy to have toys in her ex pen. She’s a 9 week old GSD. She also bites me when I try to play tug with her and my arms are all bandaged up. How can I stop her from biting me without damaging her drive?
Hi Cindy,
I'm a bit confused about the rules on puppies with toys. Ed says in several of his videos that the toys are his, and that he doesn't allow the pups to keep them. Yet in the ex pen video, there are toys in the pens that he says he rotates every 2 days. Can I get some clarification on this? My high prey drive GS pup is really getting bored. She's 9 weeks old.
I am on steroid inhalers for asthma and the skin on my arms is very thin. Due to my pup being so mouthy, my arms are band...

I leave my 2 year old Lab/Pit cross in a crate while I am at work. How long is too long to leave a dog crated?
I have a quick question. I have a almost 2 year old Lab/Pit mix and I crate her while in work since she has what I am assuming separation anxiety since she chewed my furniture each time I tried to leave her out of the crate and I left the house. I emailed before questioning that problem but she is fine when I am home, does not destroy anything, so I don't know how she can break from it if it is done when I leave the home. Besides that, I want to know how long is too long to leave her crated. ...

The more I read about the dominant dog collar, the more confused I have become. Can you please help me with what sort of collar set up I should have with my dog?
Hi Cindy,
First let me thank you for all your advice and the very educational DVDs that are available through your website; and second, let me apologize in advance for the questions I have in this email as I should've been able to get my answers from all the helpful Q&A sections....but apparently, I'm a "slow learner"! Ok, that said, here's my dilemma: I'm slightly confused about if the dominant dog collar is exactly what I'm looking for, or not; the more I read, the more I confuse myself!...

I have 2 puppies and they sleep in their crates all night without accidents. During the day they do not tell me when they need to go out even though I’ve put bells on the door for them to ring. What am I missing?
I have two maltipoo puppies. One is 7 months old, one is 8 months. I am still having trouble getting them house trained. They are in the crate at night and sleep all night without accidents. They are taken out first thing in the AM and usually both go pee and poop. Once they eat, they are taken out again within the hour. Sometimes they will both go pee and poop again... sometimes just one will. Here is the problem. They do NOT tell me when they have to go out. I have them confined to the fami...

Our adopted a 2 year old female Bouvier has become very aggressive to strangers. Do you think she can ever be safe?
The problem in a nutshell is aggression towards people. I need to decide how to try to handle it, or return the dog to the breeder.
About a month ago my wife and I adopted a 2 year old female bouvier. She is the 3rd bouvier we have owned, all from the same breeder, all adopted as adults. This dog was originally in a home with 3 other bouviers, and reportedly had developed aggression towards the other dogs which is why the original owner gave her up. She reportedly had never exhibit...

My boyfriend's dog has killed and eaten 3 cats that we know about and is aggressive to most animals. Is it possible to have her wear a muzzle until she understands not to go after cats?
Hello,
I'm really hoping you can help me. I am a cat lover and have a 6 month old kitten/cat, we are about to move in with my partner who is a dog lover, he has 2 french pointers, mother and daughter. The mother is highly aggressive toward smaller animals, she is a rescued dog who has never fulfilled her hunting nature (we guess because of whatever was done to her when she was small, he got her when she was just 1 year old, she is now 4).
She has killed and eaten/torn apart 3 cats tha...

I'm trying to get my dog to look at me when we do the heal and it just isn't working. Any suggestions?
Hi Ed,
I'm writing you to ask you how to train a dog with no motivation. My name is Jonathan and I have been training my pit bull for PSA. I have done a lot of work with him. His bite work is very strong. My problem is with obedience. He has no toy drive, so a tug or a ball is out of the question. I did all of his obedience with food and corrections. He is a lazy dog so everything he does is slow. The slowness is not my problem, because i know what my dog is and he can't be sped up...

I'm working with a 160 lb dog at an animal shelter and he's extremely reactive to other dogs. He had a neck surgery and can't wear a collar, do you have any tips on how to handle a lunging 160 pound dog on a harness?
Hi Cindy,
I work at an animal shelter and we have a very large Dane mix (160 pounds) with us at the moment. He's an unneutered male, just over 2 years old. He grew up without boundaries and pulled his previous owners off their feet several times, even broke their leg and shoulder.
We trained him to walk nicely on the leash without distractions, but he is very reactive to other dogs (sex doesn't matter, so I assume it's not a testosterone issue). When he sees dogs he lunges like crazy, ...

My dog is motivated in training but when I get to a trial she sniffs and looks away. It looks like she has no motivation in the ring. Do you have any pointers?
Hello,
I do obedience training with my 3 year old springer. When I practice with her she is very motivated and does what I ask. I am in open A CKC. When I go to a trial, she is in her own world and does not cooperate and sniffs and looks away.
I have just purchased the Michael Ellis DVD Focused Heeling. I have practiced this a week and I do see an improvement. How long does this take, I practice a little every day?
It almost looks that she is not motivated when I go in the ring? Do y...

Our trainer recommended using a prong collar on our 4-month-old puppy. Should we follow their advice?
Hi Cindy,
Our trainer recommended we use a prong collar on our 4-month-old German Shepherd puppy. In her assessment, she said the puppy did not respond to leash pressure with neither a flat collar or a martingale collar. So a prong collar will make sure we get her attention during our walk outside. We are concerned that it might be too early to introduce it to her that it would shut her down in her decision-making.
We tried walking our puppy with a flat collar with some success when the...
