My 9 month old GSD won't eat and is very skinny. Can you help?
Mr. Frawley, first let me start off with I am a big fan of your training videos I have 2 right now and plan on getting more soon.
My question to you is this I have a 9 month old German Shepherd purebred who is in great health except he is very skinny so much so that i can see his ribs through his coat pretty easily. The vet doesn't know why he wont eat. I have him on a strict eating schedule. 9am 3pm and 7pm. I don't leave his food out for any more than twenty minutes tops. As of two weeks...

When I take my dog to the kennel they require that he be up to date on all vaccinations. Is there any way around that?
I noticed that on your website it says that the Honest Kitchen brands verve, force and embark are not made with intense heat? does that not hold true for the keen brand that Honest Kitchen offers?
I've also been reading up on the harmful effects of vaccinations and I'm seeing it's not good for my dog? but this is my problem? When I take him to the kennel they require that he be up to date on all vaccinations. I have not seen any kennel that does not require that, at least anywher...

My 6 year old foster Golden will rip the siding off my house if she is out longer than she wants to be. How can I fix this dog?
I'm pretty much at my wits end. I'm what I would consider an experienced dog person; my age, my life, etc.
I have a foster Golden; 6 yr old, SF...she came to me with some serious issues. She is storm phobic, has "separation anxiety," etc. etc. A behaviorist nitemare.
If left outside longer than she wishes, she will rip the siding off our house. The timing can be five minutes, or fifty...the trick is figuring out how long is too long...letting her in BEFORE the behavior starts.
She ha...

My new rescue is frightened of the crate (possibly used for discipline) for reasons we can only speculate. Is restricting him on a leash when we go out a option? Any ideas?
Hi Cindy,
My new 2 year old GSD/Malmute rescue is frightened of the crate (possibly used for discipline) for reasons we can only speculate. He is gentle and well-mannered, but our real problem is when we try to leave him at home for several hours alone. He has a "temper tantrum" and the house we return to is a mess. Is restricting him on a leash when we go out a option? Any ideas?
Thank you,
Alan

My dog listens to my husband more. He says I need to let the dog know I'm the boss, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. Any suggestions?
Mr Frawley,
I understand you get lots of emails with questions on dog training. I admit I need help. Here is my story. We adopted a puppy from a rescue almost 2 years ago. Our older dog is of unknown breed, we where told collie/hound mix (female), but I do not think this is true. I have worked very hard with this dog, and she is truly a wonderful dog, but from reading most of your articles I think we need to revisit some training. which I will do gladly.
We have adopted another dog, 2 m...

I have a puppy who seems to be a soft pup, can it do Schutzhund work?
Mr. Frawley,
I have a raised and sold a litter of nine working German Shepherd puppies. I feel eight of the puppies had good temperaments. They were what I would call pretty HARD. They are not sensitive to correction and come back at you when you correct them or play rough with them.
One pup is very sensitive. She has the most INTENSE prey drive and also is VERY food driven. However, she is very sensitive and will respond to a sharp "NO" or a quick shake on the scruff (this ...

My 5 month old Husky/ Shepherd cross seems to be afraid of my husband when I am not around. What can we do to get her to like him?
Hi,
I have a 5 month old female Husky/Shepherd mix. When I leave for work on Thursdays she stays with my husband, most of the time I leave her in her kennel and she will not come out of the kennel when he is the only one home. If I leave her outside she will not come in the house. Also, when he tries to let her out when I am home, she runs and hides behind me. Just to keep in mind I am with her Sun-Wed then with him on Thurs and Fri she is with me at work and on Sat with me. My hus...

I'm interested in training my Police K-9 for FEMA certification. I'm having some Focus-related problems that I know are handler error. Can you help me?
Ed,
Thanks for the Basic Obedience tape. I have been working with Law Enforcement K-9's for about ten years and you have by far the best no nonsense tape on the market. Thanks.
It has made my two dogs outstanding working members of the family who can be totally enjoyed anywhere.
I'm interested in taking one of my dogs up a notch in his training centered around urban and rural disaster search. Particularly FEMA certification. I'm stumbling on some basic stuff which I b...

My 14 week old GSD is doing well with the training. The only problem is the dog's inability to walk on the street especially when cars are passing by. In fixes for this?
Hi Cindy,
You probably recall me ordering various DVDs training last June. My 14 week old GSD is doing well with the training. The only problem is the dog's inability to walk on the street especially when cars are passing by. He is so stressed out that he pulls the leash and wants to go back home. No amount of encouragement or treats works. He is okay to walk in the park or in our back garden but becomes a problem when we take him out on the street. I wonder if you have a suggesti...

My dog minds when he has a prong collar on, but not when it is off. Do I need an electric collar?
I would like to start by thanking you. I purchased your video Basic Dog Obediance and it was wonderful. I did what you said on the tape and my dog realy responded will to it. I have to say that when my pup was little he was very good at home, but just awfull on a leash in public. Now, after your video and a pinch collar, he is very good out in public and on a leash, but just awful at home. He is now eight months old and my problem is that he will be well behaved as long as you have his le...

We have a 6 year old Male Lahsa Apso. We need to find a muzzle to fit him so that we can bring him to the vet. Any advice as to which would be best for us?
We have a 6 year old, Male Lahsa Apso, 22 lbs that we rescued 2 years ago. We need to find a muzzle to fit him my wife has purchased 2 and they don't fit. When we took him to the vet on saturday they have insisted that we have a muzzle on him next time we bring him in. He hates anyone going near his face. They finally had to sedate him to examine him. He has bitten us several times since we rescued him. But my wife refuses to put him down, she thinks there's a good dog in there. We...

I have a 13 year old female GSD that has recently been digging up and eating dirt from the yard. Do you have any suggestions as to the length of muzzle I should get?
Hi there Ed,
I have a 13 year old female GSD that has recently been engaging in some bizarre behavior. She has been digging up and eating dirt from the yard. It is not just in one particular area, but from several areas (it is quite a large yard). It is also quite a sufficient amount of dirt she has been consuming. She has a diet of Nutra chow supplemented with lean chicken and fresh, cooked vegetables. This has been her diet for many years, but this behavior is quite recent. I am not sur...

We have 3 dogs and 3 cats. The pitbull won't stop trying to kill the cats. Would an electric collar work? Or a muzzle?
Hi There.
I found your website while trolling for ways to control or train a new to our house Pitbull. We rescued her a few days ago and she is slowly putting weight back on, just skin and bones when we caught her, which wasn't hard!
We already have three house/garden dogs and three cats. The Pitbull, now named Harley, just won't stop trying to catch and kill the cats! How do we control Harley as we do not wish to have her put down? Would an electric collar work? What about a muzzle?

When we walk our 8 month old dog she pulls us down the street when we get near a house that she knows there is another dog at. Can a HALTIE solve our problem?
Hi. I have a problem while I walk my 9 month old dog Annie. I do not want her necessarily to heel the whole time I just want her to walk on a loose lead. When I walk her because she knows where the dogs in the neighborhood live she will pull harder near a dogs yard until we get there then she will bark at the dog. Then when I finally get her away from the dog she pulls until the next dogs yard. We live on a street with many dogs so there is no avoiding them. She basically just wants to sa...

My 2 year old Golden still bites. Is there anything we can do to stop it?
Hello Ed,
Our Golden Retriever who is almost two is still biting...we have tried everything! Sometimes it seems as though she is very serious and uncontrollable. In addition, she hates to walk. Whenever we attempt to go on walks, she jumps up over the leash and bites at our hands and refuses to walk as we try to fix the problem. Also, she is very timid around other people and especially other dogs. She does not show aggression, but puts her tail in between her legs. When attempting...

My dog is extremely sensitive to any correction. I'm reluctant to do serious training with him. Do you have any suggestions?
I have some basic to intermediate experience with dog training. I have never tried a remote electric collar before, and just purchased one locally, made by SportDog (I have no idea if this is a decent product or not). I just found your website, and would really appreciate some advise as I have a very unique dog. I am a veterinarian, and this dog came in on emergency one night after being hit by 2 cars. The history on this dog was minimal, he was seen by someone in the town being hit in th...

I've sent in 2 sets of xrays to OFA on my 3 year old GSD and gotten back 2 different results. Do you have any advice?
Mr. Frawley,
I have inherited a working lines GSD male dog. He has excellent blood lines and is a tank of a dog.
I have no doubt his hips are fine, but have sent them to OFA twice, about five months apart, after having them xrayed by two different veterinarians, and they have come back with different results both times. The first time he was mild on both hips, the second he was mild on the left right was normal.
Now, I didn't see the first set of films, they were not ...

Our female GSD was diagnosed with pannus about 7 months ago. We are worried about the steroids the vet recommends. What do you think? Do you have experience with this?
Hi Ed,
Our female GSD was diagnosed with pannus about 7 months ago (we live at almost 7000 feet).
The vet said in order to prevent her getting blind we have to put one drop twice a day of "neomycin and polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Ophtalmic suspension" in each eye for the rest of her life. We are worried about the steroids. Please let us know what you think, if you have any experience about that disease.
Thanks so much,
Steffi
