My young dog is very excited when I take her out of her crate. She jumps around and mouths my hands when I try to put on her harness or leash. How should I handle this situation?
Hi Cindy,
I have an 8month old female Belgian Malinois. When I take her out of her crate to go outside, as I go to put on her harness or lead she jumps around and sometimes mouths my hands. I would like your advice on how to best handle this situation and if I need to put a slip collar on before she gets out of her crate?
Thank you in advance :)

My puppy jumps all over my nephew and scratches him. Please help!
Hello! I love your videos and guidance. I do have a question though. My 14 week old Boston Terrier puppy ONLY jumps on my two year old nephew, and in her excitement, she scratches. It is hard to train her out of this because we see my nephew only every few weeks. I know we don’t use positive punishments, but in the moment she’s jumping, what can I do? I don’t want to put her on a leash and pull the leash and make her leash shy (we rarely use the leash and so she doesn’t have enough po...

When I am luring my dog he licks my hand while trying to get the reward, how can I stop this behavior without diminishing his drive for the work?
First of all, I want to express how thankful and grateful I am with the content that I've purchased. It really improved my game and the bond with my dog.
I have a question about luring; my dog keeps licking my hand extensively while luring him (trying to get the reward, or at least taste it, I think).
How can I stop this behaviour without damaging the lure work? I would like my dog to just touch my hand with its nose during the lure without licking my hand.
Many thanks in advance.

I’m getting very frustrated with my 11 week old puppy! He pees in the ex-pen and pulls on the leash so hard he chokes himself. Is he a normal puppy?
Hi Cindy,
I don't mean to keep bothering you but I am having some problem with my pup.
1) I use a comfort flex collar and British slip lead at night when I take him to the bathroom. He pulls so hard on the leash that he chokes himself, I can't get him to stop pulling. He's 11 weeks should I use a pinch collar now or wait? This dog is very head strong and determined to go and get whatever wants.
2) I have problems with him peeing in his pen. He's great at night and no issues in the...

My young dog has been anxious and aggressive to outsiders since our old dog has passed away. Do you have any suggestions?
I have 3 yr old shepherd, in April our 12 year old Belgian Shepherd passed away. Since then our 3 year old has had increased anxiety and is aggressive toward outside people coming into the house (not family). At one point, she did not walk any further than 5 houses away on our block. I have gotten her back into walking. Prior she was great personality, friendly to people coming and going (comfortable in her fur). She has anxiety attacks. Any suggestions would be great. I had 4 prior shepherds...

My 15 week old puppy has developed a chewy grip on the jute puppy sleeve. At 10 weeks old he would grip very well. How can I resolve this?
Hi Cindy,
I have a 15wk old Shepherd pup. He has decent possession and will chase a ball, rag, sleeve. He arrived at 10wks of age and would grip and carry toys/objects well. As he's developed he has become very chewy, especially on the jute puppy sleeve. This has transferred to the leather rag but not the softer squeak toys. I can pull the sleeve/rag out of his mouth with only minimal effort. Obviously I do not want him to learn he can't win or that the sleeve is always going to be ripped ...

Our GSD has always barked when he hears noises outside but now when he hears something, he quickly goes after our other dog as if she were the threat. How can I get him to stop associating our other dog with noises he hears outside?
Hi Cindy! Thanks so much for all the helpful info you've shared.
We have a 2.5-year-old male GSD who has always been a major barker when he hears someone outside our house – especially other dogs. We and our trainer have been trying to train him out of it and thought we were seeing progress up until recently. He developed a scary habit where upon hearing someone outside, he not only barks but quickly goes after our other dog (a 3-year-old Malinois) as if she were the threat, even if she ...

My 17 month old dog has travel anxiety, can I use an e-collar to help this?
My 17 month old dog has travel anxiety, she pants and won't relax in the 2nd seat of our SUV. She is in a safety harness and can lay down. I tried a name brand herbal calming product which did not seem to help, I'd like to avoid Benadryl or vet Rx. Chew toys or treats are ignored.
Would it be o.k. to use the e-collar to break her thought process, say as part of saying down, (she ignores commands when so agitated) or would a tap or click make things worse?
She didn't have any trouble tra...

The problem begins with an obsession with a female dog in the household and then you have an intact male suddenly lifting his leg and marking. How do you handle this behavior to put a stop to it?
Here's one a good many of my friends, both general owners and breeders are having. It doesn't matter if the offending Male dog has been fixed since it was a pup or if its still intact. Our new puppy hates all men. He seems very fearful of them. We've also had some problems with him going to the bathroom in the house. What can we do?
Hi,
I have a question on our new puppy...his name is Toby and is 9 months old. We recently got him free from another family. He's a great dog, just having small issues with him. #1 and main issue, he hates all males (human). He can't stand my boyfriend (he lives with me) and this is from when we picked him up. He shakes uncontrollably with fear, barks, howls, growls and will even bite him when he goes to pet him, walks in from work, is anywhere around. We've tried giving him treats when he...

My trainer and I disagree on using markers while teaching nosework. What are your thoughts?
My question concerns rewarding for an odor 'find' during NW. I am having a disagreement w/nosework trainer who is certified in NW, but does not have an obedience training background. My dog is conditioned to my verbal marker, and when I give it he instantly knows he's giving the correct behavior, and that he can expect a food or toy reward momentarily. Per my trainer, we are not to give direction to the dog during NW practice, but she apparently believes this includes verbally marking the wan...

My boyfriend has two dogs that fight a lot and it has been worse lately. What would you suggest we do?
Hi,
First I would like to thank you in advance if you take the time to read this!
My boyfriend has two three month old american pitbulls. They are brother and sister. They always want attention at the same time and you can never be with one but you need to be with both. Even if you are with one, as soon as the other one sees it will come over. The problem though is that the female dog, is extremely dominant over her brother. To the point where she will always being the fight, take his f...

I'm a bit worried about feeding her fish. I know it's good for her, but does the same thing apply to fish bones as to other meat? Can I feed her whole mackerel-type fish with heads and fins and bones?
Hi Cindy,
I have a 3 month old female Rottweiler, she was weaned onto kibble by the breeder. After reading your website (among others), I switched her onto a raw food diet and she's loving it. Best thing is to watch her open an egg for herself!
I'm a bit worried about feeding her fish. I know it's good for her, but does the same thing apply to fish bones as to other meat? That they're safe when raw, but brittle when cooked?

In pack structure training, what does 'full crate submission' mean?
I just purchased Establishing Pack Structure with the Family Pet DVD and I don't understand what 'full crate submission' means. My dogs are going in & coming out submissively, however they still have moments when they cry/bark, especially at night.

We have two dogs that like to rough house to the point that everything becomes destructive. How do we best control them without kenneling them one at a time?
Hi,
I have been training dogs for over 40 years, both in obedience and in conformation for show and now I'm stumped. We have two dogs, a 7 1/2 year old Bullmastiff male and a 10 1/2 month old Mastiff male. Both dogs are still intact. The older one was recently diagnosed with first stage renal disease and neutering is not an option. The younger one is a very good show prospect so neutering him is also not an option. Neither one have ever been used as a stud dog.
The older dog was trained...

Can I let my dogs (male and female) live together in the same place and let the female decide when is the right time for breeding?
Hello Mr.Frawley,
I'm new to breeding and I currently own a male and female rottweiler (both dogs are excellent on shows and have FCI certificate for Hd,Ed).
I want to breed them and I want to ask you the following question:
Can I let them (male and female) live together in the same place and let the female decide when is the right time for breeding?
Or should I separate male from female and bring them together only for breeding and then separate them again? (I have heard from som...

My female Rotti started to have a dark greenish discharge. I took her to the vet and she gave birth to 16 stillborns. What would make her go into labor and have all the pups dead?
Hi,
I own a 3 year old female Rotti that I bred to my 2 year old male Rotti. Everything went fine as far as them getting tied and she indeed got pregnant, but around day 40 she started to get this clear discharge coming from her vagina. I did some looking on the internet and I saw that a clear discharge is fine but then by day 45 it started to turn a dark grenish. I took her to her vet and he also said that it was normal but put her on anitbotics just incase. The next day she started havin...
