My dog is a crate eating, fence jumping, kennel hanging nut job. In your experience, is this behavior likely to extinguish and stay gone?

Thank you for all that you do for dogs. I run a rescue that handles 2,500 critters a year. I foster 6 to 10 a year in my home. I take some of the ones that don't fit in well at the shelter. I am now hosting an 18 month old Cane Corso female. She is a crate eating, fence jumping, kennel hanging nut job. Has wrecked 2 crates this week and hung herself in a kennel badly injuring a front leg. A great dog, but does not accept confinement. I read the articles on this topic ...

My 11 year old dog has a defecation and urination problem. He will sometimes go when we leave the house, room, or leave him in the car. What should we do?

Hi Cindy, I have an 11 year old male neutered Standard Schnauzer. I wish I had found you years ago as this behavior has been present since my dog was a puppy. As a puppy I would notice that on occasion when I would leave the kitchen area where the dog was confined to, I'd come back to find he had urinated in front of the board blocking his exit from the kitchen (he was house trained by this time). He would also do this if I went into the bathroom with my children and shut the door behi...

I don’t want to rush into it but, eventually, how will I know the dog has understood the pack rule and I can advance to Obedience Training?

Hi Cindy, The no bark collar worked immediately, in some way, until I got the level adjusted. But by the next two days, it's been so quiet and calm here. I wish I had this knowledge 3 years ago when I first got the dog. Also, the 'no contact' in establishing pack rule has made our living so much better for me and Brody. Brody seems to understand without me saying anything. And, the difference was almost immediate! The dog is a lot smarter than we give credit for. We, humans, are a ...

I’m a little confused about the advice you have given regarding dogs who are timid with strangers. Can you explain the specifics of when each type of training is appropriate?

Dear Ed and Cindy, Thank you for providing such a large amount of information regarding dog training on your web site It is a wonderful resource that is much appreciated. I have also watched your Puppy Training video, and my husband and I are trying to follow the techniques you presented. I'm writing because I'm a little confused about the advice you have given regarding dogs who are timid with strangers on your web site and in your video. In some cases, your advice is to work with the dog...

I have a 3 year old male GSD who is overly friendly with strangers. At this point, is it realistic for me to change this behavior and, if so, how?

I have a 3 year old male GSD. Great, obedient, family pet. Most of the training I put him through was prior to coming across your fantastic web site and knowledge base. With that said, I'm happy and he seems happy with how everything has turned out. He is, however, overly friendly with strangers. I have read some of your training on different subjects and was wondering if you can guide me to one of your DVDs or articles on how to keep him from being so overly friendly with strangers. Basicall...

I have personally had 7 dogs in my career and brought in a 2nd puppy w/o incident. Maybe your training and dog experiences are with breeds that ten to be aggressive?

Good morning. I have read at least 20 articles that you have written and I finally got fed up when I read the ones on introducing a new dog.... Although what you say "can happen" I think you fail to realize that 80% of all dog owners do not have the time, knowledge or inclination to follow your very restrictive training rules. I have personally had 7 dogs in my career and I have always brought a second puppy into the home without any incident. I am also a member of a lot of dog owners groups ...

I have in the last 2 weeks taken in a rescue Aussie. I'm not sure what else I can do to get her to trust me and be a normal dog. Suggestions?

Hi Cindy, I have in the last 2 weeks taken in a rescue Aussie, I have my own Aussies. She was purchased at auction by Aussie rescue and was a puppy mill mom for an unknown amount of time. She is totally un social, doesn't care for or want attention. If given her own choice she would lay in a crate or dog house forever and not move. But I don't want that for her I want to at least make her secure or trust a little. Everyday it's like the first day she has seen me she cowers, ducks t...

Mr.Frawley, Hi my name is Jack and I have been looking through your site and it is full of excellent information but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. My dog will only bite with the front of its mouth. Are there other ways to make a dog bite with a fuller grip?

Hi Mr. Frawley, I know I have sent this to you already and I understand that you are probably very busy. I apologize for being so persistent and this probably sounds like such a stupid question, however I would appreciate any advice or reference to articles on your web page that could shed some light regarding this issue. As I previously mentioned it's regarding a two and a half year old GSD bitch training towards IPO 1. We are having problems with her bite. She keeps biting on her front t...

I’ve let a playful lab turn into an aggressive nightmare. He is cross certified in wilderness and human remain detection. How can I make sure he won't be aggressive out in the field?

Good morning, For someone who should know better, I've let a large playful, lab turn into a dominant, dog aggressive nightmare. I've been training search and rescue dogs for 15 years and he is my first dominant aggressive dog. He snarls, lunges when a new dog shows up at the house or out in public. As I never personally dealt with a dominant dog in the past, I didn't see all the subtle warning signs as this dog developed. He is 110# 2 ? old lab and last summer he started growling a...

Is tracking thru drive stressful on the dog?

I have just bought and looked at your Level I and II & III RCMP tracking videos, and found them very well made and interesting. A few questions, if you have the time and possibility to answer them: 1. You work with very high motivation, and the dogs are selected for very high drives. Are there generally any stress-related problems on the track due to this? Like dogs not being able to concentrate enough at track losses, difficult conditions, etc.? Do you think stress management i...

I am about to receive my new patrol dog, (an import), can you offer advise on how to bond with this dog?

Dear Ed, This week I will receive my police service dog. He is a 2 year old import, he is not a fire pisser nor is he a doormat. A nice balance defines the personality of this dog. My question is, how do I best aqua in him to his new home. Which includes a 11 month old puppy and a house cat. I want the dog to have as little situational stress as possible so that we can get on the path to bonding as a team. Any insights or ideas would be helpful. Mark

Our dogs are locked in prey. When we hit them with the stick they will not stop focusing on the sleeve that is laying on the ground. What should we do?

I did a training session yesterday, I walked my service dog along and came upon the query who stepped out unexpected. My service dog was barking, then the query who was wearing an exposed sleeve walked towards the dog using a whip as in your video tapes. When the dog launched initially, he bite on the sleeve and was given the sleeve. I kept the dog on a 6 foot leash, he "carried the sleeve" as in your tapes, I "outed" him, we stepped back out of reach of the sleeve, then the query stepped...

I am being considered for a police K9 handler position. I am concerned about the safety of my two small children. Do you have any advice?

Our department is forming a K9 unit and I am being seriously considered as the first handler. I am interested in your opinion on my "situation." My main concern regarding the safety of my family unit as we have two very small children and two adult dogs. I understand each dog is unique but without any further information do you think I would be a suitable departmental K9 handler or am I setting myself up for disaster? Thanks in advance, Kathy

What do you expect from a good (working) puppy to show you before you treat him as a mature dog and not as a puppy?

Hello Ed, I work in the Israeli swat in puppy program for special forces. We have few malinois puppies in different ages, and we have some disagreement between us about the best age to put real pressure from a decoy on the puppy/dog. I'll be glad if you can answer from your experience with puppies and young dogs, what are you expect from a good (working) puppy to show you before you treat him as a mature dog and not as a puppy. What are the cues we need to see ...
