Why would my 4 and 5 year old dogs suddenly start urinating inside the house after being housetrained their entire life?

I have a question regarding my 5 year old Jack Russell Terrier and my 4 year old Miniature Pinscher, within the last 6 weeks both of my dogs have been urinating in my house in every room. We have a 1 1/2 year old son and when we brought him home from the hospital they were fine. I am now pregnant with my second child and just out of the blue they are both peeing on furniture, carpet, anything they can lift their leg on. They are let outside frequently because I work from home. We have blo...

I think that German Bloodline dogs are harder to house train than American Bloodline dogs.

Hi Mr Frawley, I am finding your web site very helpful. I have had GSD all my life and back in June lost our best friend of 11 years. I now have (my first, and much wanted) a new 100% German bloodline female. She is 4.5 months old. I have a urination problem with her as well as many I read on your board. I am convinced at this point that this is a German bloodline thing. I have had all American breeds until now and have never had this problem. My question is: how do you know a pupp...

I feel mean when I put my puppy in a crate and let the older dog run loose. Should I put the crate closer to the other dog?

We bought a Mini Dauschand puppy when she was 8 weeks. I also have a standard who is 11 and is not doing so well with her health. We got her about 5 weeks ago. Her living arrangements were very clean and they were well looked after. I did try to crate train her, but I gave up. I wish I would have read your site in the beginning!! Anyways, I messed up! She did pee in her crate and whined constantly, so of course I took the easy way out and put her in bed with my other dog. My older dog we ...

I am trying to my 12 week old puppy to a larger crate as he is outgrowing his old one. He urinates in his new crate. How do I stop him from doing this?

Dear Mr. Frawley, I have a 12 week old puppy that I I received two weeks ago from South Africa, and I live in Canada. I have been training him according to your method of house training, with lots of exercise and walking before and after meals. Until now his training has been flawless, with no accidents in or outside of the crate. He came in a wood crate, and I felt the crate was getting too small, because there is not enough room to put his water in without him knocking it over. I...

We use expens for different areas, including inside, outside and in the garage. Recently my puppy has begun going potty in the inside expen. What should I do?

Hi Cindy, I made a mistake with the potty training with my new pup. I had 3 ex pens for her, one outside for a potty area, one in the garage for middle of the night trips (necessary because I don't go out in the middle of the night due to wildlife and bear that visit our deck) and one in the kitchen area for containment. I either have my 9 week old tethered to me, in her crate or in the pen. I follow all the housebreaking rules as best I can. Here is the problem. Due to wetness...

My dog sniffs around a lot to find just the right spot before he poops. Why does he do this? Any suggestions?

Hello Cindy, I tried to find this on your site before I asked but I couldn't. When I take my dog out to go potty, I don't have trouble with him peeing, but when it's time to poop, he has to find the right spot. He with sniff around, and get ready to poop and stop and move around and sniff some more. This drives me nuts. It's like he has to find the perfect spot. Why does he do this? I didn't have a problem with this when he was a puppy. I would bring him to the spot I wanted him to...

It seems that everyone has an opinion on how long my GSD can hold her pee or poop. A friend said puppies can hold it for 1.5 hours for each month of age. Is this true?

Ed, I have a GSD puppy just short of 5 months old and have watched your 8 weeks to 8 months video and looked at your website and Q&A, but I can't seem to find an answer to my question. It seems that everyone has an opinion on how long my GSD should be able to hold her pee or poop. A friend told me puppies can hold it for 1.5 hours for each month of age. Is this true? My wife and I continue to take her out almost every 4 hours and she performs satisfactory each time (strange conside...

I have a 3 month old GSD that’s mouthy and bites on our pant legs. What should I do?

Hi I have a question regarding my 3 month old German Shepherd. I read some of your answers about a dog being 'mouthy' vs. being truly aggressive. My dog is mouthy and bites our pant legs and socks etc. However when we tell her 'no' a couple times she then barks at us, and when my husband tells her 'no' she barks at him and sometimes growls when he tries to correct her. Are we not correcting her enough or do you think this may be a temperament problem?

My 11 week old Rot is constantly biting at my pants legs. I do not want to do protection work with him. What can I do?

I received and viewed your "puppy" video. Thanks, it helped, although I already knew most of it from having a Doberman and GS years ago, though the refresher was appreciated. However, I now have an 11-week old Rottie. He is friendly, outgoing, and learns quickly. However, when we walk by, he will "latch on" to our pant legs or legs if we have shorts on, the jeans will rip as he will not let go until the command of "no bite" is given. We want to stop the original bite. We hadn't planned to do ...

At what age can I use a dominant dog collar on my pup? He is biting a lot and sometimes seems vicious.

Hi, Can you tell me at what age I can start using the dominant dog collar. I got a puppy that is out of control with the biting. He has been like this since he was 6 weeks old and now he's 16 weeks old. I have your DVDs on pack structure and puppy training 8 weeks to 8 months and nothing seems to help I had to put him on a choker for self preservation. Please help he acts at times like a viscous dog. I don't know if its my fault in this training process or what, would a prong colla...

I have a 7 month old miniature english bulldog who needs to constantly chew something. I have tried several items and am wondering what else I could try?

I have a question about dog chew bones. I have a 7 month old miniature english bulldog who needs to constantly chew something. I have tried several items (nylabone, kongs, beef bones, beef hide). She's not interested in the kong or the nylabone, she loves the beef bones but they give her blisters on here chin and around her lips, and she is obsessed with the beef hide. She gets them soft and chews long strands that unravel. Is there anything else out there that I could try. Will the...

My 18 week puppy loves to chew shoes and especially boots. I have some ideas, but I don't know if I would be setting him up for failure? I would love to know your thoughts.

My 18 week (Chinook) puppy loves to chew shoes and especially boots. We have a boot matt near the front door and he will often try to grab one and run off to play with it. He never has a hold on one for more than a few seconds as I always make him drop it and distract him with something else but I am wondering if I were to give him an old pair of boots as his toy would I be able to teach him to distinguish that these are his and the rest are mine and off limits or should I keep it black a...

Can a bottle fed puppy be a good working dog?

Cindy, I have bought many....many of the videos you and Ed have made and love them. Thanks! How do you think hand feeding a litter of puppies affect their working abilities? If a litter was bottlefed, is the litter more or less likely to be good working dogs? What are the pros and cons. What should a potential owner look for or be concerned about? Thanks, Gail

I am considering feeding the bitch the formula. We are always struggling to keep weight on her, would help her put on weight and condition?

Hi Ed, Our 2 1/2 yr old boxer had 3 pups on tuesday. One was stillborn the other 2 girls appeared to be doing well. One of them however, is not as strong and got de-hydrated. Have been using Whelpi formula with moderate success, but this morning the pup was pushing it away. So a few minutes internet search for an alternative feed and bottle (the ones I have, have a cone teat, which was not very successful) and I found your site. I had already thought about getting baby bottles (es...

Hello my name is Barb. You seem to be an expert at raising puppies. I have a very weak bulldog puppy. She is 8 days old I am tube feeding her every 3 hours. I was wondering can I feed her every 2 hours and if so do I split the formula dosage. She weighs 12oz and I am feeding her 11cc. She was feeding on the mother and then she just stopped sucking after 5 days. She is hardly moving at all. I hope she does not die. Thanks for your help, Barb

We have one 'runt' that we have on your formula. How often should we feed him? Should start on solid food? My vet says feed every 3 hours, but his appetite has dwindled since.

You provided us with some great advice a couple weeks back, and I am hoping you can help us again. We have a litter of Corgi pups, 4 weeks old on monday. We have one "runt" that we have on your formula. He is about a week behind the other pups developmentally, and has had a few close calls. He opened his eyes a week after others, etc. His lungs are a bit harsh, and the end of last week, he was battling an upper respiratory condition. This seems to be resolving. My concern is how often to ...

My dog had 3 pups and they all appear very healthy. She has ever since the delivery, refused to clean the sacs from or even feed them on her own. What to do?

Dear Sir, I have a mastiff and she is 24 mons. and had just delivered a litter on 10/06/2010. She had 3 puppies and they all appear very healthy. She has from the time of delivery refused to clean the sacs from the pups or even feed them on her own. I have her bedding down every two hours to feed the babies and she doesn't seem to mind as long as I stay with her. I have looked at your feeding formula and have considered this should she refuse to do for them under my comand. I am se...

Where do I measure my dog for a harness and which tracking line would work the best?

Good afternoon. I just joined a Schutzhund club and I'm looking to purchase a harness and tracking line. My first question is in regards to the harness. My GSD is a 70-75 lb male, 11 months & 1 week old today. What size harness would be appropriate? Where exactly would I measure him? I'm guessing it would be the brown version (25 to 39"). My tracking line question is which material would be good to have. I certainly don't need the 'best,' but I also don't want one that will be ruined ...
