My dog loves doing agility work, but suddenly he just doesn't want to do it. I noticed that he has been drooling a lot too. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?
Hi Ed,
My wife and I acquired a black lab / beagle mix (Shadow) from the humane society about six months ago. Shadow will turn two next month.
We thank you for so much info on your site, and we've purchased the puppy DVD, basic dog obedience, and all of us have been learning a lot. It helps that Shadow is the smartest, most engaged dog I've ever had.
His sit / down / sit&down stay / heel, and come have been great. We've even been doing some agility training with him ...

My pup has pano and I am wondering if there is anything that I can feed or give him that would help this go away?
I just read the article on pano. I have a 6 1/2 month old american bulldog going through this. The vet has him on rimadyl, I was feeding him large puppy food. I read about the raw diet and wonder if you could tell me more about that, what all is in it. Or what should I be feeding him to help him get over this.
Thank you,
Reba

I feed raw and our puppy is very underweight. Everytime I increase her amount of food she gets sick, any thoughts or suggestions on what it could be?
I want to start by saying that I have been frequenting your site for the past ten years and have found it more than extremely helpful. Whenever I have needed sound advice, I have told my husband..."I'm going online to see what Ed would do." You've never let me down yet.
I had a GSD imported from the Czech republic that I recently had to put down and have gotten a new puppy. I got the puppy from a very reputable source here in my area, The dam is a dog that belongs to the person in...

My 7 1/2 month old Dutch Shepherd only has one testicle that dropped. I have been told to neuter him now because of health complications. I'm unsure. Any suggestions?
My 7 1/2 month old Dutch Shepherd only has one testicle that dropped. I have been told to neuter him now because of health complications. I do some schutzhund training with him and he is a pet with my wife and daughter. I am also working with a trainer to work on Mold detection with him. Before this was discovered I was going to wait awhile and determine if I would neuter or not. The breeder offered to buy the dog back but I am attached and don't think I can let him go. Do you agree and w...

I have two questions, one regarding taping ears and the other about a limp my pup has.
Hi,
You have an awesome website. Obviously I have a GSD, 5 month old female who still has a few more puppy teeth to lose. She is from the Czech line and long hair. Her right ear likes to stand when running outside or sometimes just playing. But when it's back inside, the ears are just floppy. She's beautiful either way and my 2 GSD males love her too.
What is the latest you could go without trying the taping/skin gluing procedures? We will be going to the breeder in June when she'll hav...

Have you ever heard of reversing the damage from HD? OR have you ever had a dog of this age fail and then retest later to pass?
Hi and I just want to say a really big THANK-YOU for your site and all the info you provide. I have bought several of your videos. I have been breeding/showing and training dogs for about 35 yrs. I currently have Bernese Mountain Dogs and Tibetan Mastiffs. You can never have enough knowledge!
I have a female Tibetan I have a question on. She was OFA prelimed at 14 months. She was rated a GOOD and NORMAL. Well many things happened at her 2 yr birthday and I just did not get her 2 yr...

My dog is experiencing what seems to be allergies with eye discharge and hair loss. What do you suggest I do with his diet with the Honest Kitchen food?
Thank you for spending the vast amount of time I am sure it took to build your site. It is the most complete and non bias site I have found in a year and a half of surfing.
I would be great full for your help on this issue. I have a one and a half year old Boxer named Copper who is experiencing hair loss, itchy and flaky skin on his ears head and neck. I am sure you can guess, the vet wants to give him steroids which I adamantly refused. But I am still left with a miserable itchy d...

I have some questions about using an electric collar, can you help?
Hello Cindy,
First, thank you for the quality products and great DVDs you offer; we have purchased several items and have enjoyed everything we have bought. I have two questions pertaining to whining and digging. My GSD is not a big backyard digger, but he has seemed to find a few select locations where he likes to dig. We have not been able to catch him digging. Is this solvable with corrections or an E Collar? Can you recommend a solution?
Lastly, both of our dogs are comp...

What collar would you recommend for a small breed dog?
One more question before I order. What type of collar do I get for a small dog. I watched your DVD and you use big dogs with big remote collars. Mine is only 18 lbs and small neck of about 10" or so and those collars will be huge on her. I use a small prong collar with 2 links removed. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dale

I work as a correctional officer with a dog. My 3 year old Lab-mix has started to show signs of being nervous about going into cells. What can I do?
Sir,
My K-9 is a Lab-X, 3 years old and has been working drugs for approximately two years. Since I work for the Department of Corrections, our searches include a lot of cells and open bay type dormitories. My dog recently has been showing signs of being afraid and timid upon entering these dormitories, appearing to be more concerned with the sounds and movements around him than the actual search of the buildings. Do you have any suggestions or training ideas to help me with this p...

Our department's 3 year old Malinois will stop a search if he finds a plastic bottle. Do you have any thoughts?
My department has a 3 year old malinois who has a problem with plastic bottles. He indicates very well on narcotics until he sees a bottle. When we go to do outside training with other departments we purposely place bottles in the training area. He has no problems with the bottles during these trainings, but when at work if he finds a bottle the search is over?
Any help thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

My chow-mix would not let me out of the back door of my home yesterday. What should I do to fix this?
I am at a lose as to where to turn regarding dominance and aggression issues with my dog. As a young puppy, somewhere between 6 mo. to 1 year she was placed in the yard of an auto body shop. She had a doghouse and was fed regularly, but that was about it. My boyfriend visits this shop often and developed a relationship with the dog (I believe she is part Chow & part Keeshond). When I purchased my own home he asked me to take her in. At that time she was 3 - 4 years old. There is also an indic...

My 4 year old GSD bit me when I tried to take garbage away from him. I ran away. What should I do now?
Hi,
My 4 yr. old German Shepherd and constant loving companion, bit me. I had placed a bag of garbage containing a turkey bone on the floor. I heard him chewing the bone from the garbage and went over to him. He growled at me, which surprised me greatly. I then spoke firmly to him and reached for his collar to pull him away from the bone. He growled again and bit my wrist. It was one quick bite and I pulled away and ran. He has been quite humble ever since. I was shocked. I thought...

I am 13 and my 6 year old GSD has recently started growling at me. What should I do?
Hi,
I am Heather, and I have a German Shepherd. I live with my mom and 2 sisters and I am starting to see some signs of aggression. My German Shepherd is a male and is 6 years old. I e-mailed you before about him adjusting to the apartment I moved into. He had adjusted well but he has been growling at me lately and tonight he snapped at me like a bite but he did not puncture the skin. This started a few months ago when I lived in a house. He started to growl at me when I was trying...

Dear Ed,
You probably hear sad stories like this all the time; moreover, don't like to personally respond to repeat questions. Well, I'm desperate for some guidance as I'm stuck in a major dilemma.

I have an 8 month old Boxer who has a very dominant personality. How do I teach my dog that my son and boyfriend are higher up in the pack?
Cindy,
I have an 8 month old Boxer, named Rambo, who's always had a very dominant personality. I think our mistake was getting him at just barely 6 weeks of age from the breeder before he learned bite inhibition. The past couple months he's developed what appear to be dominant traits of trying to mount smaller dogs and even my 4 yr old son. He also resource guards, but I'm the only thing he resource guards, he gets near vicious (back up, teeth barred, barking) when anyone comes nea...

Can I reverse my dog from being a FEAR BITER?
I was reviewing the Q&A section on your web site regarding fear biting. My questions were not really answered. Here's the situation. We have a 1 year old Lab Shepard mix. We are not sure if she has other breeds in her. We also have 4 children. 3 weeks ago, she growled and nipped at our youngest, who is 2, unprovoked. She was boarded at the vet over the weekend, and they were unable to give her a bath or give her a heart worm test. Every time they approached her to put a leash on her, she ...

My 4 year old rescue German Shepherd is so afraid of meeting new people he shakes when he is around a lot of people. What can I do?
I have two dogs. My first is the younger of the two, she is a Rout/Beagle mix who was trained as a pup to work with handicapped children. She is well trained but sometimes refuses to go outside because she escaped once and the pound picked her up and had her for a week. My second dog just turned 4 and is a GSD. He is papered and was neutered. He is leash and house broken but does not respond to commands like sit, stay, and come. Is he to old for obedience training? He is very well behaved...

Our 8 year old Aussie is very fearful. She has nipped visitors to our house before. Recently she has started hiding under the bed and bit me when I tried to get her out. Do you have any advice?
I found some useful information on your site re fear biters. Our Aussi is 8 years old and has always been fearful of loud noises, thunder storms etc., she is also very territorial of her house and car. That said if a person with a dog comes to visit she is very accepting, if they come without a dog she barks, and will try to nip ankles and on several occasions when people have tried to calm her she has nipped an arm. Lately she has been going under our bed and won't come out even for treats a...
