Our dog whines A LOT. I've seen the success decribed on the website regarding bark collars. Is there anything similar for whining?

Cindy, I'm sure you've heard this many times before....we have a Doberman who whine. A LOT. Barking isn't a huge problem (he does bark, but not to the point that it's an issue). I've seen the success decribed on the website regarding bark collars. Is there anything similar for whining? Something that would issue a correction for whining, but not for as bark? I see no reason to correct his barks, given that the problem is the whining. The dog does seem to have general SA issu...

Recommended If a purebred female breeds with a non-purebred male, will she ever be able to have purebred puppies with a purebred male?

I have a registered walker. She is currently in her first week of her second or third heat. I left her in a pen at my dad's when I left for a few days. Somehow his pit and lab mix got to her. I was wondering if my purebred (female) breeds with a non-purebred (male), will I ever be able to breed her with a purebred male and the puppies be purebred also?

Recommended My dog is crate aggressive but only to my new puppy, do you have any suggestions?

Hello Leerburg Staff. My question is about what seems to be crate aggression. I have read many articles on your site and now I am trying to find one about crate aggression but have been unlucky. I can't be the first person with this issue, maybe I am looking under the wrong article headings. Anyway, I have bought a GS puppy and have not let the puppy interact physically with my other dogs, just through the crates. My 4 year old Lab tries to attack the puppy when she is in the crate if he goes...

When using the dominant dog collar as a prong collar back up, should it be larger than normal so it is not correcting?

I currently use a prong collar with my german shepherd and it was in the back of my mind that these could come apart. I saw your video. I also saw the video on fitting the dominant dog collar. My question is, in using the two together, in case the prong should separate, would you get a dominant collar that was a little larger, since it is being used as a backup and not for correction? Or is there another type of collar that could be used? Thank you, Kathy

I have your Tracking Thru Drive video. I went out 100 yards and hid, my dog went crazy to find me as I left him. Was this correct?

Hello! Just had a couple of tracking questions/comments. I recently purchased your Tracking Through Drive Level 1 tape and have started watching it and doing some of the basics (handler laid tracks)....and boy, have I already come under serious scrutiny over doing it differently then our trainer does it. I started doing the actual exercises today by having someone hold onto Remco while I ran away, calling him and teasing him as he went crazy. I went straight out then hid behind a t...

My 1 year old Great Pyrenees escapes from all attempts to chain her and then will not come when called. She just runs around barking. What can I do?

We have a year old Great Pyrenees bitch that I have been looking forward to breeding. She is incredibly obedient even to the subtlest commands when she is in your immediate care. However, we live in a hilly rural area and when she is allowed to be unrestrained she completely rebels against any command and runs all over tyrannically barking and disappearing into the hollows. She has somehow escaped every method of restraint no matter how I've chained her. We have yet to complete a farm fen...

I was wondering if you had any immediate thoughts on martingale flat collars. Are these effective and humane?

Hello! I've gotten so much out of your site and the Basic Dog Obedience DVD. It has helped me so much with my 18 month old rescue Weimaraner. I also got a hold of "Don Sullivan's Perfect Dog" (theperfectdog.com) and while I appreciate the plastic 'kinder gentler' prong collar that comes with this, I found his training advice to be less helpful than what I learned from your DVDs. In particular was his emphasis on never using treats. Joe and I have been working on retrieving work and...

I don't reward my dog on a real search unless the drugs are found. I am concerned about rewarding my dog for a false indication. What's your opinion?

Ed, I have a question about rewarding dogs on an actual search. I know some handlers who will give a the dog the toy when the dog alerts on a vehicle in a real search. The toy is given at the time of the alert before any drugs have been found. I personally do not do this. I am afraid of rewarding the dog for an alert that might not be right and reinforcing an improper behavior. Part of me says 'trust the dog' and the other part says 'don't reward what you don't know'. In tra...

My 3 1/2 year old Chihuahua is marking my whole house. What can I do?

Dear Ed: I have a huge problem (or it is to me anyway). I have a 3 1/2 year old neutered Chihuahua who is marking my whole house. I assume that marking is different then just peeing in the house. It's not like a puddle in the middle of the room but rather on the corners of everything. I searched your site for an answer and could not find anything on the subject. 3 family members have acquired puppies (and live separate and apart from us) but frequently visit and bring their puppies...

Recommended I've had several people tell me that my 9 week old lab is too young to go for walks. Do you agree?

I have a 9 week old black lab male. I've had him for about 17 days. He's being crate trained and has been doing great. I've had several people tell me he's far too young to take out for walks, and that I should wait until he's at least 12 weeks old. And even then, no more than 15 minutes at a time. Do you agree with this?

I started dog training and mentoring with someone. I would like your input on an incident with an ecollar that happened recently.

Hello Ed, I have started dog training and I am currently mentoring with someone with over 20 years in the business. Today I shadowed him whilst he did a 2nd home visit to a couple with a pitbull mix (PB mix) and a boxer mix, (Bmix) both females. The couple had recently moved in together. The man owns the pitbull mix who was seemed very friendly and wanted to play and the lady owns the bulldog mix who had started to attack the PB mix. The trainer had the lady play with the PB mix (not...

I’m confused on what type of correction to use for not coming when called.

Hi Cindy just a brief question, I?ve read your advice and other peoples on your blog and such and am a little confused on the issue, you and some of the other people say it must be 100% compliance to the COME command, the only thing NEVER mentioned is the type of correction used, (this I find most curious as this is the most important part of it). If I punish or firmly correct my dog when he doesn?t come what motivation is it to come once he has disobeyed it and knows there is a correctio...

My 18 month old GSD has started to growl at my husband and I. Is it too late to obedience train him? Will it even help?

Dear Ed, I have a 18 mo. old GSD. I'm so attached to him It would just kill me to have to put him down. Before him I had a pair of Dalmatians that lived for 14 yrs. Before that I had a beagle who lived for 9 yrs. All of my dogs were very well behaved dogs. However I didn't do enough research on German-Shepherds before I bought one. The one that I have has been very hyper from the very start, We thought this was cute. He has always been a little crazy. But he is also the most loyal,...

My neighbors are giving me a hard time about my dog barking. Personally I don't mind it. What can I do to stop the barking?

I have a 3 year old weim and my neighbors are giving me a hard time about his constant barking when he is in the back yard. Now, I don't really have a problem with his barking. I like a vocal dog. It makes me feel better when I am not at home to have a loud dog that distracts burglaries.. etc. I think it is safer for my family. However, back to the neighbors. I remember the way that we used to stop dogs from chasing cars by throwing a bucket of water out of the car. Would that work for th...

Recommended I don’t understand the difference between a choke collar and a dominant dog collar. It seems like they are both used as a Jerk & Release correction.

I do not understand why the chain choke collar can cause neck injuries and the dominant dog collar doesn't. I have seen the DVD on the dominant dog collar, and I understand about the value of keeping the collar right behind the ears, but it still seems to me that it is a "jerk and release" action, just like the chain choke collar. Is it the placement on the dog's neck the difference? Or the fact that it will give "softer" jerks? I'm not getting the mechanics of the difference. Thank you.

Can I buy a trained dog in personal protection. I am leaving in the guards and need something for my family?

Ed, This may be a stupid question but I am wondering if I can purchase a "trained" dog for my family's protection. I live in a desolate area and worry about my family when I'm gone. I have two nice dogs but they won't even bark when people visit (they are lab and ??? mix). If it weren't for the deer that feed near their underground fence (by the way it works great) and geese that fly in to feed on acorns I don't think you could get a bark from them at all. I love them but travel wi...

My dog pulls us while walking on a leash. My trainer suggested to try your Dominant Dog Collar. Is it okay to use on a dog with no aggression?

Thanks for you wonderful website. I have a question about the dominant collar. My dog is a black Labrador. He is 10 month old. Since 3 months, we have been working with a trainer. Niki, that's his name, is VERY stubborn. It's taken time and hard work to "persuade" him do something. He keeps testing the boundaries every day. One problem we are having is that he pulls us (me and my wife) while walking him on a leash. It's even a bigger problem when he sees a cat/another dog/something he ...

I would like to train my own service dog, but cannot find a dog that I get along well with due to a few things. What do you suggest?

Hi, my name is Michelle. I have a kind of complicated question to ask but I don't have anywhere else to turn to. I've been searching and went through a lot of different dogs trying to find the right dog to be a service dog for me because I have anxiety, depression, social phobia and I black out. For some odd reason most dogs I go around seem to perceive what I have as threatening. So my boyfriend saw this add online for a litter of rescued bottle feed 3 week old puppies and thought maybe me r...
