My 4-month-old puppy is afraid to walk on leash away from our home. How can we build her confidence?
We are trying to leash train our 4 mo. old miniature schnauzer. I have purchased and viewed your puppy video, which as been very helpful. Our dog really doesn't have a problem walking with the leash, but won't do it because she is afraid of unfamiliar territory beyond her home turf. How can we build her confidence so that she will walk with us?

Is a micro prong the right choice for our 40-pound dog?
Hello, we have a very sweet but dog reactive beagle/basset mix. We are currently in training with a trainer who recommended using a prong to help with walks that were becoming stressful (lots of pulling and barking). I can't believe what a difference the prong makes! Our current prong is a bit large though (it is a Herm Sprenger with clip closure, stainless 1.5 inch width and approx 16.5 inches length). Can you please recommend a more appropriate-sized prong for our beagle/basset? It seems to...

How should I speak around my puppy? I don’t want to dilute my obedience commands by using some of the cues or his name in conversation. How do you speak to a dog in order to preserve the meaning of commands?
I need some advice about how I should speak around my 14-week-old Retriever. I am following training methods detailed in courses and videos purchased from your company. My question concerns carelessly using words associated with very important skills in everyday conversation with the puppy. Among them is the word COME. My puppy has learned a very good unrestrained recall. However, both myself and my wife find ourselves saying COME HERE to the puppy for a variety of reasons but not the officia...

My 15-week-old Dutch Shepherd puppy is hesitant and nervous around people, is this normal? How much should I push her with socialization?
Hello! My 15-week-old Dutch Shepherd pup is very hesitant with people and seems nervous. I really try and socialize her a lot. She never barks or shows aggression, just retreats and backs away from people. Wondering if this is normal and how much to push her with socialization. I try and give lots of treats while socializing to make it a positive experience but is there any risk of pushing them too much and overdoing socializing? Also, what are some recommendations for the best places to soci...

Our dog who has epilepsy has been very aggressive since his first seizure. Is his aggression from the seizure? What should we do?
Hi. Me and my mom and dad have a 3 year old miniature poodle. He has epilepsy and is on potassium Bromide. He has been VERY aggressive since his first and only seizure. When I take him outside, he literally attacks me! Last week my dad was bringing him back from a walk and he lunged at my dad and bit him and to get him off, my dad had to kick him! Is this apart of the epilepsy or just aggression?! What should we do?! People are scared to pet him when this happens!

My Rottweiler puppy is not finishing his food when I feed him meals. He eats food from my hands during training but will not finish his food in the bowl. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi Cindy,
my puppy (4 months Rottweiler) is having some problems eating his meals (2/day).
During our training he eats easily his kibble from my hands but when it's time to eat from the bowl he eats something and go away. It looks like he want to be feed by hands.
Our meal routine is easy:
- I prepare the food (kibble)
- he waits in a sit position for a few seconds
- I release him and he eats
Am I doing something wrong? I can't understand the reason. He's eating less than he sh...

Will I confuse my dog if I teach her multiple tricks in the same time frame?
Hey! I am new to Leerburg and loving all the training resources, I am slightly addicted to following along and training. I am wondering how many new things it's okay to teach my girl at the same time in separate training sessions? She is a high drive working GSD and she loves to train as much as I do but I am wondering if I will confuse her if I teach her multiple tricks over the same time frame?
Again thank you for all the resources you offer, I wish I could absorb it all at once, so exci...

I have a service dog that is struggling with the retrieve. How can I break it down further for the dog?
Hi Cindy,
You have been wonderful with answering questions in the past, thank you. My question is this: I have a service dog that is struggling with the retrieve. The dog will take and hold but the moment the object goes to the floor the dog is baffled. He cannot seem to understand the difference from just above the floor to floor. Obviously, this has made teaching the dog to bring objects difficult. Any thoughts on ways to break it down further for the dog? Thanks

Do you have any articles or books to suggest on dog-on-dog aggression to read for possible solutions?
Cindy, I have several beagles that I hunt with, and two red heelers for working with our cows. One of the red heelers, a female, cannot be around the beagles without trying to kill them. We have to keep them separated all the time. The dog is very loving and usually obeys but not when it comes to the beagles, she hates them.
Do you have any articles or books to suggest on reading for possible solutions? If not, then I will have to rehome her, and she is good with working with the cattl...

I'm having some issues using the food delivery device in nosework. What would you suggest?
I have purchased the "The Foundation of Nosework with Andrew Ramsey DVD" and have been working my 5 month Malinois on it for a few weeks now. He has been doing great on the first few steps.
1.Using 3 drawers open using nose to find food.
2.Then using the second step of letting him self reward after the drawers are closed and the scent has been added. *Note: He will quickly find the target drawer and begin to scratch, usually only one time then I pop it open for him to self reward.
*no...

Your electric collar training methods worked great for me!
Hi Cindy and Ed.?I have approximately 6 or 7 of your DVDs and two of them are on remote collar training. I couldn't be happier with the knowledge and information you have given me via your DVDs. I have 3 rescue dogs that had some serious "barrier frustration" issues with fences. First and foremost: my dogs are exercised daily, have good obedience and live with in routine. However, they would get so worked up w/?various dogs on the?opposite?side of?the fence that they would often demonstrate r...
