I’m concerned I screwed up my 12-month Rott. What should I do now?

We have a female Rottweiler, 12 months old and spayed, who is very very bossy with our 2 year old neutered Australian Shepherd. We have done some protection work with the Aussie and he is terrific at anything we try. The Rottie is still too young for most training, so we are working on some obedience and some bite imprinting. She is not aggressive, but will carry her tug to him and bump him until he walks away or growls, will try to stand off with him when he is approaching us from a fetch, a...

A local training school told me I should use German to train protection work. They said this would make it easier for my dog to understand. Is this true?

Hi, I am interested in purchasing your training videos but I would like to ask a few questions that I haven't seen in your Q&A section before I purchase. I have a Rotty that is 12 weeks old that we bought when he was 8 weeks. He is the sweetest dog and just loves everyone. We purchased him for a family pet as well as for personal protection for our family. Now my two questions;1. I have been told by a local training school that I may consider to attend with my Rotty that he should be trained ...

Now that we've progressed in training, my dog seems to have too much drive and can't focus when working on obedience. Should I be working on capping his drive?

Hi Cindy, Love what you guys are doing over there, new videos are great. Here's my question, I have an 11 month old GSD, and we started doing our protection work about 1 month ago and having a lot of fun with it, but when we try to work obedience now it seems I have to get him worn down before I can even start to get him to focus. It seems his prey drive is almost taking over all the obedience training I've done with him. I just watched a video from Michael Ellis abo...

I signed up for a protection dog class and I feel that I have been scammed. Can I do the helper work on our own dog?

I've been doing agitation work, and training my dog for the past 6 months now. To better my knowledge as an agitator, and trainer I've recently purchased a couple of your training tapes, and numerous books on the subject. I've come to the conclusion that I've been caught up in a bit of a scam. It's a combination obedience-protection class. One Hour of obedience (mostly healing) immediately followed by bite work. The class contains approximately 15 dogs. All dogs are present during ...

My dog has been swallowing acorns and it has been very costly and making her sick. What type of muzzle would you recommend?

I have a min. schnauzer and we have 2 acres fenced in with 40 trees that have thousands of acorns falling well she happened to swallow an acorn and it cost me almost all the money I have to determine her problem, the acorn was in the intestines. The vet charged me 4000 dollars even though I mentioned the acorn right from the beginning. I need a muzzle that is comfortable and she cannot take off or get an acorn in her mouth I had the wrap around mesh but I don't think it helped because she...

I was wondering if they made any kind of muzzle that my dog could wear during the day that would allow him to still eat and drink.

I have a 5-year old male German Shepherd that is very aggressive towards the others shepherds when my female is in heat. She is almost 10 and cannot be spayed due to congestive heart failure. I keep her in another part of the yard during heat but even during this time, my male shepherd will try to about kill my other males/females. I have 5 dogs total and do not breed them anymore. I am having him neutered next week but I was wondering if they made any kind of muzzle that he could wea...

We're having issues with our pup being more interested in eating snow, than drinking water. We were considering using a muzzle. Any suggestions?

Hi Cindy, Were having issues with our pup being more interested in eating snow outside, than drinking water inside. When we had the melt last week, and also took him with us for the weekend about 6 hours south. He drank plenty of water that weekend, but now that were home he isn't drinking enough, and basically runs with his mouth open and shovels snow in. We caught a UTI a few weeks ago, we're almost through a UTI treatment, our vet said likely it was caused by eating less ...

We have three rescue dogs two about twelve; male and female one recently rescued about 8 months old a female just over her first heat. She became very aggressive with the older female, she has established her dominance but still there has been several attacks and the last few were bloody ones and harmful to the older female. I have 3 small children and would like to add a puppy. Some people have been telling me to wait until the little one is at least 3. What input do you have?

Been a long time fan of your kennel and training methods. Have a question that I would like your expert opinion on. My wife and I have three small children 5,3,1 and would like to add a puppy to this mix? I have been getting mixed reviews about having a dog with three small kids and that I should wait till the little one is at least 3? We are thinking about getting another dog. Do you think our dog can have a relationship with another or is it too late for him? Should we just not get a puppy?

I need your help in making the right decision. We have a large bullmastiff that is a 4 year old male. When we brought him into our family we had a male black lab who was 9 years and a female golden retriever who was 7. They adjusted to the bullmastiff just fine. The male black lab was the dominant dog and there was never any trouble with fighting. In fact, the bullmastiff would pretty much bow down to the lab. He played regularly with the golden. Last November we had to put the black lab ...

I have a 10 month old Rot that always grabs the leash and acts threatening when I try to stop it. What should I do?

We have a male Rott that is ten months old, he has one annoying habit. When on the leash he will periodically bite at the leash and we have tried everything to try to break this habit, he seems to do it to get something going and then he gets feisty and argumentative. If you try to use force, it gets worse. The Alpha roll does not seem to get it. He is better with my wife, he really tries to get something going with me. Looking for help, we would like to break him from this and we do not ...

When my 4 month old GSD sees other dogs, his hair stands up, he barks low, and sways his tail back and forth. Is this normal?

When we approach people and especially other dogs on our walks around the street or in the local pet store and in puppy kindergarten class his hair stands up, he barks low and sways his tail slowly back and forth. Or it stays partially limp, not stiff nor tucked. When he's in actual contact with them, he's fine. Perhaps a bit shy, but not scared. This is sending me mixed signals. Is he just happily greeting, feeling threatened, or being protective.

My dog is obedience trained. His problem is that he knows when the leash or long line are on and will mind, but gets stubborn when the leash is off.

I have heard mention correcting a dog many times in your articles. My question is what would a level 10 correction look like compared to a lower level correction? My dog is almost eighteen months old and grabbing by the back of the neck does not have the same affect as it did when he was a puppy. Most of the time he minds, but occasional he will be a knuckle head. He knows basic obedience and most of the time he will respond to me saying "no." Another problem that I have is that he knows when...

What is your opinion of these new Sonic Collars that use sound and not electricity to train a dog?

Hello Mr. Frawley, I wanted to know what your opinion on the product below was, is it worth buying. The new Pro Trainer Plus is an electronic pet training aid that uses sound, not shock, to teach your dog or cat to behave. The Pro Trainer Plus gives you four different training tones. Three obedience tones are provided to teach your pet specific behaviors such as Sit, Come, Heel, etc. A rapidly pulsating, irritating "NO!" tone is provided to deter barking, jumping, digging an...

I started training my 5 month old pup using food. I think that may have been the wrong thing to do. Am I right?

I am having some problems with my GSD. He's five months old and showing almost every sign of aggression and dominance listed on your site. Even as I am typing this he is giving my husband a hard time(growling and barking because he has been forced into a down position and wants to get up). I made the HUGE mistake of buying him from a woman advertising puppies in our local paper ....I didn't know I was making a mistake then...but I have certainly learned a lesson. This may seem leng...

We have taken our 5-month old dog to a very reputable dog trainer. The problem is he is getting scabs on his neck from the corrections. What can we do?

I was wondering if you could help me. I am having my dog trained by a very reputable trainer in my area. The pup is 5 months old and when the trainer works with the dog he does everything. When we work him we are causing marks on his neck. Some are scabbed over. It seems like we are not having great success with using corrections on this dog. We are using a choke collar and our trainer says that we should give him a good correction instead of many little ones. We are afraid to hurt him an...
