My dog sometimes jumps up on my grandchildren for no reason. What should I do about this behavior?
Came across your website while searching for help with regards to my 3 year old GSD. He's a well-bred, German line GSD, very high drive. He's very good with people but not so much with other dogs (only certain ones it seems). I deal with this by avoiding other dogs. However, my big problem, that I don't know how to handle, is his interaction with my 6 and 8 year old grandchildren. They live out of state, so we only see them a few times a year. He has NEVER shown any signs of biting or growlin...

I walk a dog at a local shelter who wears a muzzle on walks and when playing because he has bitten people 5 times. I am contemplating removing his muzzle to try and correct/stop his biting. Is this a reasonable thing to do? And if so, should I use a verbal/physical correction or should I ignore the biting to show him it doesn't work?
Hi Ed & Cindy,
I'm currently dog-walking a 65 pound, 5.5 month old neutered Mastiff/Labrador from a local shelter. He's been in residence a month. He's currently wearing a wire muzzle when walking or playing in the yard. He has bitten people 5 times - 3 times on the same person when she's been removing his muzzle. He had no prior (known) behavioral concerns after living his first rescue months with a woman and her young child along with some other animals.
The other dogs at the shelte...

My dog is a therapy dog and makes this gurgley, growling sound when she visits with another dog. What am I doing wrong and how can I correct it?
Hi,
I have 3 GSDs and my one is a certified therapy dog now. She is very sweet to people and dogs. When she visits with another dog she makes this loud gurgley, growling sound but doesn't lunge, snap, or bite. Its almost like she's trying to talk to them but it startles people. I give her a loud verbal correction as well as with the correction (choke chain) collar. She stops at that point but does it again with the next dog. What am I doing wrong and how can I correct it?
Thank You

My dog becomes aggressive when I board him and my vet prescribed Prozac. I'm not really comfortable with this. What would you suggest?
I have a 6 year old male German Shepherd who has not been socialized very well and when I try to board him he becomes aggressive to whoever is trying to take him into the boarding area. Once in the area it takes him forever to calm down before the staff can do anything with him. My Vet has him on Prozac to keep him calm. I am not comfortable with doing that because he is fine with me and doesn't act out. I am currently working with a personal trainer who has me using a muzzle on him whenever ...

I believe that my dog was exposed to an aggressive dog. An experienced trainer gave me some advice on what to do. What is your opinion on my situation?
I read all about dog aggression towards other dogs. My 15 months old female GSD has most probably been exposed to an aggressive dog (not attacked) at the age of 6 months. An experienced trainer in Austria recognized the reason for her aggression towards other dogs and advised me to raise her up with her collar whenever she would bark aggressively or try to run towards other dogs. That would cause her discomfort and she would eventually stop the behavior. What is your opinion? He also exposed ...

Our dogs fence fight with the neighbor's loose dogs that are actually on our property. Might pepper spray be justified in our situation? What would you suggest?
My 3 y/o intact and 18 m/o spayed GSDs are contained in our small recessed fenced yard and exercised elsewhere. Our neighbors own a 4 y/o spayed Newfie and 2 y/o intact Pit Bull who run loose on their larger property. When their dogs run up to our fence, no reward or deterrent is effective to get our dogs to stop their fence fighting which has progressed to the males locking teeth through the chain links. Also, the fence goes up a rocky and now icy hill so that it is difficult to get to the d...

My dog has started attacking one of my other dogs who has heart problems. I'm afraid my dog is going to kill the other dog. What would you suggest I do?
I am looking for some guidance as to what type of training my dog needs. I have a female miniature Schnauzer/Maltese mix that will be 2 in January. She has recently began attacking our 11 year old poodle (also female). The poodle is sick with heart problems and the attacks on her are becoming more frequent. Millie, the mixed breed, also chases the cats and tries to go after them but not in the aggressive nature that she has with the poodle. The poodle now trembles when Millie is anywhere near...

We have tried to introduce our rescue dog to other dogs. She is very aggressive, growls, shows her teeth, and even went after another dog once. Is there anything you can recommend?
We rescued a Black lab about 2 or 3 years old, when we rescued her she was brought in with another female dog. We have introduced her to other dogs and she is very aggressive, always growling, showing her teeth, and this one time went after the dog. She is very dominate and other dogs are scared to death around her. We are not sure of her past or know what has happened, but we need to find out a way to snap this behavior fast. Is there anything you can recommend? we need her to be able to be ...

How do you deal with the owners of loose dogs that charge up to your puppy?
Owners of loose, undisciplined dogs apparently take it deeply personal when I prevent their charging dogs from "saying hi" to my 3-month old Malinois. It's always "Oh, they won't hurt him" and just now, it was "your attitude needs an adjustment, young lady." I haven't had to kick any (out of a grand total of five dogs) yet, but I can just imagine the city-wide outcry that would follow if I dared to use anything at all beyond body language. These have all been full-sized or full-sized plus obe...

I have a 15 month old Malinois that nips on occassion when excited. Today he attacked my son when he tried to take something away. What should we do?
I have a 15 month old Mal. I am very impressed with his abilities and he seems to love people. He does nip on occasion when excited. This appears to be a friendly nip as he does it to me. I do correct him and the behavior is under control. He is excelling in obedience, does well in public, does not show aggression with other animals and until today, no food aggression. I say no food aggression until today, because my older son texted me at work and said Chase just attacked him. He texted me p...

My dog was attacked at a dog park about a year ago and we've been dealing with fear aggression ever since. Any ideas on training?
Hey folks,
I have two adult dogs. There is Lilly, who according to a DNA test is part American Bulldog and part English Bulldog. She looks the part of an American Bulldog more so than the English.
The other, she is Lola. A Border Collie/Boxer mix.
Lilly was attacked by a Great Dane in a dog park about a year ago. The issue we have had since then is what most trainers have called fear aggression.
We have had her trained for obedience via choke collar method from a company here in...

My golden retriever killed my 5 year old yellow lab. Is there a way to break up a dog fight when you are alone or should I let them fight it out?
Ed,
I recently tried to break up a dog fight between my 4 year old golden retriever and 5 year old yellow lab (both neutered males). The fight occurred in the middle of our large yard. I was alone but still tried to break up the fight by grabbing the back legs of the dog that was wining and lifting and pulling back. As soon as that dog would let go, the other dog would attack. This went back and forth several times. Each time I was able to get one dog to let go, the other would attack. Th...

My dog was attacked at the dog beach and now she is aggressive towards other dogs. How can I train this behavior out of her so that we can go back to 'normal'?
Hi,
My female terrier dog is 6 years old. She was attacked on a local dog beach by a big dog that just ran in from nowhere as she was playing in the sea. The attack resulted in 3 stitches to her neck. Now my dog is aggressive with other dogs. If they approach her she tries to bite and warn them away. This is a problem as obviously many dogs use that beach and there is always a dog that approaches her. My dog does not initiate an attack, she just warns them off when they come too near. How ...

My Catahoula Leopard Dog killed my Min Pin. What should I do?
Hi,
Very heartbroken and torn on what to do. We got a Catahoula Leopard Dog when she was 6 weeks old. About 2 years ago she started to look at you scary when you gave her a treat and sat next to her on the couch. I think if I touched it she would bite me. Then she went after my Min Pin's treat and hurt her badly. She also goes crazy if a dog passes our house her hair goes up and when I try to make her stop she will get aggressive with me. But the worst thing about this is she could be so l...

I'm not actually having a problem, I just wanted to know if my German Shepherd is just being a German Shepherd or has he taken being protective to a whole new level.
Hi, I'm not actually having a problem. Just wanted to know if my 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd is just being a German Shepherd or has he taken being protective to a whole new level.
I take him to the dog park frequently where we have miles and miles of off leash paths through the woods to walk through. We meet lots of dogs and for some reason, if there is a problem anywhere, my dog has to get involved and sort it out peacefully. If a little dog looks like he's being picked on, Dax is the...

Do you think what my dog is doing is a sign of aggression or toy aggression?
I had a question regarding a dog with small acts of aggression. She has had two incidents where she has shown acts of aggression on another dog. She is a Pitbull mix adopted from a rescue.
The first incident, her normal trainer said she was correcting the other dog because it was biting the other dogs in the dog park. She did not hurt the other dog, she just would not let go.
The second incident was the most concerning. She was at the dog park playing like normal until another owner w...

My dog wants to kill everyone. We can't even take him for walks anymore. What are we to do now?
My pitt bull is 6 years old, we got him right before my daughter was born, he was raised along side her. He has been an amazing family dog, never ever has shown signs of aggression towards us in any way. But for everyone else, he hates everyone, he wants to kill. and I mean KILL. We can't even take him for walks anymore because now he wants to kill everyone/dog we see and also cars??.... Its painful walking this terror on a lead. What do you do with a red zoned dog? We can't have him around a...

My boyfriend's dog has killed and eaten 3 cats that we know about and is aggressive to most animals. Is it possible to have her wear a muzzle until she understands not to go after cats?
Hello,
I'm really hoping you can help me. I am a cat lover and have a 6 month old kitten/cat, we are about to move in with my partner who is a dog lover, he has 2 french pointers, mother and daughter. The mother is highly aggressive toward smaller animals, she is a rescued dog who has never fulfilled her hunting nature (we guess because of whatever was done to her when she was small, he got her when she was just 1 year old, she is now 4).
She has killed and eaten/torn apart 3 cats tha...

My roommate's friend brought her aggressive dog over and this dog and my dog got in a fight. Since then, she's been growling at other dogs, not biting, but still. How do I correct this bad behavior?
I have noticed similar questions on your website, but still a bit different and not exactly direct answers with what to do, so I figured I would ask you myself...The other day my roommate was having a pool party and she told her friend to come who brought her aggressive pit bull over because my roommate (unknown to me) told her that my pit bull (Cami) is great with other dogs (which is true) and that she has socialized some other shy/aggressive dogs before (true, but not at MY house). Long st...
